Talk and Tour: Beaty Biodiversity Museum
UBC's Beaty Biodiversity Museum
The Beaty Biodiversity Museum is a unique entity, not only in Canada, but in the world. Biodiversity brings together not just the species, but the processes that connect them and connect them to us, explains Jeannette.
There are two parts to the Museum: the Research Centre which opened in May 2010, and the public side which opened in October 2010. At the ceremonial opening in May, the atrium was officially named the Djavad Mowafaghian Atrium in honor of its donor. The two-story glass gallery showcases the Museum's centrepiece exhibit, a spectacular blue whale skeleton shipped all the way from Prince Edward Island. It was a labour of love to get it here, and it's the first blue whale to be on exhibit in Canada, Jeannette adds.

Among our two million treasured specimens is a 26-metre-long blue whale skeleton suspended in the atrium, the largest blue whale skeleton in Canada! Learn more about how this specimen made its way across the country into our museum, and more about the world’s largest mammal.

Porpoise Conservation is Way Cool ─ Dr. Anna Hall (1080p)
On March 6, 2016, Dr. Hall gave this talk on behalf of the Porpoise Conservation Society at the Beaty Biodiversity Museum in Vancouver introducing all seven species of porpoise and explaining why all of them need our attention. The vaquita may be the species we are most concerned about right now ─ but what is driving the vaquita to extinction is also a global problem and killing whales, porpoises, dolphins, seals and sea lions, sea turtles, birds and sharks around the world. But nets are not the only threat they are facing, and for some of them, our lack of knowledge is what's dangerous. But there are solutions, if we are willing to act...

Beaty Biodiversity Museum Presents Cornelia Oberlander
Cornelia Oberlander, Canada's premier landscape architect according to the Governor General, joined us back in november to define what the environment means to her. Oberlander's projects are the result of studies of the social, cultural, and physical features of a given site. Through examples of her work, Oberlander shows the strong fit of the built landscape and biodiversity within the larger environment.
