How to ride the Beijing subway
Beijing has one of the largest subway network in the world. Despite this, it is very easy to navigate. As it takes you to most tourists attraction and because the traffic in Beijing is horrendous, this is the best way to get around Beijing.
This video will give an overview on how the subway works. The key to a stress-free trip in Beijing is a good map. There are many maps available online. We like this online subway map as it has a ton of information including the shortest route: They also have an app for smartphone.
If you plan to use the subway regularly, you should get a Yikatong card. This transportation card can be bought at most subway stations. You will pay a 20RMB deposit plus whatever stored value you choose. You can add more value at any time. You need one card per person. You can use the card to pay for the Airport Express and buses. You get a discount on buses when using the card. At the end of your stay in Beijing, you can return the card and get back your deposit and whatever your balance is. Not all subway stations can refund you but it is possible at the airport.

How to travel from the Beijing Airport (PEK) to the city
There are three options to travel to the center of Beijing from the Beijing Capital airport.
The simplest is the taxi. always have you destination name and address in writing in Chinese as the driver will not understand English. A taxi to the center if the city is about ¥100 plus toll if any. There is no tipping in China.
A popular alternative is to take the Airport Express to then transfer to the subway. As long as you do not have a ton of luggage and are not traveling during peak hours, this is a good alternative. Cost is ¥25 for the train plus the cost of the subway tickets. Here is a good subway map: On the airport website you can find up to date details about operating hours:
The final choice is the shuttle buses. There are many bus lines covering a good part of the city. This is our preferred transportation but you need to know which bus is closest to your destination and where to get off. On this website you can find the list of buses, their stops and operating hours:

Battleground Beijing: Daily routine in overcrowded metro
Beijing subway staff make great efforts every day to guarantee normal operation of the subway lines and safety of the passengers in the bustling subway stations.
Since June 2013, the 14 subway lines in Beijing receive an average of 10 million trips every workday, making the subway stations over-crowded, especially during rush hours on workdays. The large number of passengers put huge pressure on the city's subway system.

Beijing Subway Mobile Payment
Mobile payment started to be applied to all subway lines in Beijing on Monday. Starting from Monday, commuters in Beijing can use mobile phone with Near Field Communication (NFC) function to pass through the subway lines in the capital city, according to the Beijing Municipal Administration and Communications Card Corporation Limited (BMAC). NFC is a method of wireless data transfer. It can detect and then enable technology in close proximity to communicate without the need for an internet connection. It's easy, fast and works automatically. I think it is convenient. (I) no longer need to take MetroCard, and I could top up (through NFC) with mobile phone, said a citizen of Beijing. About 160 brands of mobile phones featuring NFC are compatible. However iPhone users cannot join the mobile metro card club as Apple Inc. hasn't unlocked its NFC feature in public commuting in China. Currently, we support Android smartphones with NFC function. Apple has not opened its NFC function to China's domestic transportation area, so this (mobile pay) function (for subway) is not accessible, said Lu Ming, senior manager for business development with BMAC. The Beijing subway system has upped its internet service to ease the pressure on commuters and provide better service. Currently, mobile payment can be applied to all metro lines, and in future, this technology will be promoted to areas such as supermarkets, convenient stores, fast-food restaurants, bakeries, parking lots, as well as for municipal fee payment and lottery.
