The marriage of Orpheus, the greatest of all poets and musicians, to Eurydice, a wood nymph, was heralded as the perfect union. Anyone could tell the couple was deeply in love. So when their wedding ceremony ended in Eurydice's untimely death, Orpheus had no choice but to venture into the underworld to try to reclaim his lost love. Brendan Pelsue shares the tragic myth of Orpheus and Eurydice.

BIGGEST Statues In The World!
The largest statues on Earth! What is the world’s tallest statue of a woman? Where can you find the largest, gilded depictions of Buddhas?
#11 Grand Buddha at Ling Shan
Ranking in just outside of the top ten of the world’s largest statues is the Grand Buddha located in the Chinese city of Wuxi [woo-see]. Like many of the statues on this list, this monument is an ode to a great Buddhist figure. Resembling the celestial buddha known as Amitabha [ah-mih-tah-bah], the 700-ton bronze being measures 289 feet tall. It was erected on a 30 foot sculpture of a lotus flower at the top of a gorgeous, 217-step staircase, surrounded on all sides by scenic forested hills. The Grand Buddha was unveiled to the public in 1996 and has enjoyed visitation from tourists ever since. In 2008, a pair of palaces were built to the south-east, giving visitors to the region one more reason to experience this colossal Buddha in person.
#10 Awaji [ah-wah-jee] Kannon [kan-non]
Looming over the Japanese town of Higashiura [hih-gah-shee-oo-ruh]is the great white statue of popular Buddhist goddess Guanyin [gwan-yin]. It is called Awaji [ah-wah-jee] Kannon [kan-non] for its location on Awaji Island, an island typically noted for its dedication to preserving and promoting traditional puppet theatre performances. But the beautiful, pale statue brought a whole new attraction to the isle upon its completion in 1982. While many Buddhist statues are either funded by religious organizations, government agencies, or locally crowdsourced funds, the Awaji [ah-wah-jee] Kannon [kan-non] is the product of a single man’s vision. A businessman from Osaka made his fortune in real estate before deciding to have this statue built. Once it was finished, it featured a museum, several small businesses, and an observation floor all within its interior. However, due to it being private property, the esteem of the statue plummeted drastically when the owner and his wife passed away. Unmaintained for years, the statue has grown decrepit with entry being deemed too hazardous to allow. Instead, it sits empty, maintaining its spot as an Awaji [ah-wah-jee] Island landmark and being enjoyed exclusively from afar.
#9 Rodina-Mat’ Zovyot!
The only European entry to make this list is a symbol of feminine power in a statue called “Rodina-mat’ zovyot”, or “The Motherland Calls” as it translates in English. With a height of 279 feet this statue is the tallest in all of Europe, and is the highest standing of any statue of a human woman. The figure is a metaphorical representation of the Russian “Motherland” and her iconic pose is meant to symbolize a call to arms in the face of enemies. Most of the other statues in this video tend to have been built in the last few decades, but this monumental piece dates back to 1967 when it was unveiled after 18 years of work. Wire ropes and prestressed concrete hold the statue together, as the unique pose and weight distribution required a finessed touch to pull off. The sword wielded by the Rodina-Mat Zovyot was initially made of the steel with titanium plating, but in 1972, the blade was replaced entirely with one made of stainless steel. This was due to weight distribution issues, as well as an audible side effect in which sheets of metal would create a thunderous cacophony that echoed through the Volgograd valley.

Eastern Washington hole is shrouded in mystery

ELLENSBURG, Wash. -- From Bigfoot to the disappearance of D.B. Cooper, the Pacific Northwest is
full of mysteries. Another mystery buried deep in the hills of eastern Washington keeps
resurfacing.
Ellensburg and its surrounding valleys and Manastash Ridge are beautiful in any season.
Some believe what lies beneath is a deep, dark hole with supernatural powers.
A man named Red Elk is one of the only people alive known to have ever seen the mysterious hole.
A Native American Shaman, or medicine man, Red Elk said his dad first showed him the hole in
1961.
He said 'This is an endless hole,' Red Elk said.
Red Elk's been back many times and said strange things happen every time he goes near it.
People get it confused with what I call the devil's hole, he said.
Many locals claim to know about the hole, but it didn't become phenomena until 1997, when Mel
Waters went on the Coast to Coast radio show with Art Bell.
I brought the dogs with me. Waters said on the show. They wouldn't go anywhere near the damn
thing.
Waters said the hole had a three-foot stone wall around it.
It seemed bottomless to him, so he used an old shark fisherman's trick -- sending thousands of
feet of fishing line down.
What I did, was I sent down a roll of lifesavers, he said. So when it hit water the
lifesavers would dissolve.
But the lifesavers came back up whole -- no water -- so how deep was this hole?
Waters said he believed it descended miles into the earth and he heard strange stories about its
powers.
One guy claims that he threw his departed canine down into the hole, he said. He swears the
dog actually came back to him.
Red Elk said it was when Waters went public that the trouble began.
Now I'm going public on this. And that could land me in a pile of junk, he said.
Red Elk claims the government has a secret base there.
An underground base, a very small, underground base, he said.
That's how Red Elk explains the white boxes covering the area on some satellite images.
He also said he's seen alien activity in the area.
A huge space craft, one, will appear and hover over the hole, he said.
That's what he said happens during Summer Solstice, when space men load and unload things at the
hole before flying away.
At the Northwest Museum of Legends and Lore, Phil Lipson said he's heard the stories.
Well, I believe there is a hole, Lipson said.
But Lipson's never seen the hole, even though he's led expeditions to find it.
I think it's actually a true event just something that's never been totally uncovered, he
said.
And to this day, no one's been able to find it, since that famous radio conversation.
Ellensburg Public Library Historian Milton Wagy said the story became a sensation after Waters
went on the radio.
He said the phone rang off the hook with all kinds of stories about the hole -- some explainable
-- some not.
He's still trying to solve the mystery of what happened to the library's file on Mel's Hole.
Well it just disappeared, which lends itself to the mysteriousness of Mel's Hole, Wagy said.
Did Mel take it? Did it just kind of rise out of the locked file cabinet. You never know there
might be a hole out there.
Now the question is, can anyone can find Mel's Hole and prove its existence?

From Oxus to Euphrates: Sasanian Empire Symposium
Several experts participated in an all-day symposium on the legacy of the ancient Persian Sasanian empire (224-651 A.D.). The Sasanians ruled a large empire in Central and Western Asia, stretching from the Oxus River to the Euphrates and from the Hindukush to Eastern Arabia, for over 400 years (224-651 B.C.). Known as Iranshahr (the Domain of Iran), it was a powerful empire that engendered much of what came to be known as the Iranian culture in the medieval and modern periods.

To fully explore and understand the ocean, we can no longer rely on a handful of large, expensive research vessels and vehicles. We truly need all hands on deck to do it.
On November 8-9, 2018, we brought together leaders and changemakers in ocean exploration, entertainment, recreation, and art to imagine new ways to empower an open, inclusive global community of ocean explorers. Our goal is to imagine creative ways to make the ocean so pervasive in modern culture that everyone has a positive association with and understanding of the sea.

After wiping out a grave threat to Emon’s emperor, Sovereign Uriel Tal'Dorei III, the band of adventurers has been sent on a journey by Arcanist, Allura Vysoren to find Lady Kima of Vord, a Halfling Paladin of Bahamut, who was drawn to Kraghammer upon learning of a great evil resting beneath it. The party get their bearings in the sprawling, dwarven city, meet a few of its more colorful denizens, and learn that the dwarves have been dealing with unnatural creatures spilling out of the mines in recent months. The mine’s overseer, Nostoc Greyspine, barely finishes explaining their troubles, when a pack of goblins and ogres come spilling out of the mine’s entrance, pursued by something far worse.

The Time Traders by Andre Norton
If it is possible to conquer space, then perhaps it is also possible to conquer time. At least that was the theory American scientists were exploring in an effort to explain the new sources of knowledge the Russians possessed. Perhaps Russian scientists had discovered how to transport themselves back in time in order to learn long-forgotten secrets of the past. That was why young Ross Murdock, above average in intelligence but a belligerently independent nonconformist, found himself on a hush-hush government project at a secret base in the Arctic. The very qualities that made him a menace in civilized society were valuable traits in a man who must successfully act the part of a merchant trader of the Beaker people during the Bronze Age. For once they were transferred by time machine to the remote Baltic region where the Russian post was located, Ross and his partner Ashe were swept into a fantastic action-filled adventure involving Russians, superstitious prehistoric men, and the aliens of a lost galactic civilization that demanded every ounce of courage the Americans possessed.

Racism, School Desegregation Laws and the Civil Rights Movement in the United States
The African-American Civil Rights Movement (1955--1968) refers to the social movements in the United States aimed at outlawing racial discrimination against black Americans and restoring voting rights to them. This article covers the phase of the movement between 1955 and 1968, particularly in the South. The emergence of the Black Power Movement, which lasted roughly from 1966 to 1975, enlarged the aims of the Civil Rights Movement to include racial dignity, economic and political self-sufficiency, and freedom from oppression by white Americans.
The movement was characterized by major campaigns of civil resistance. Between 1955 and 1968, acts of nonviolent protest and civil disobedience produced crisis situations between activists and government authorities. Federal, state, and local governments, businesses, and communities often had to respond immediately to these situations that highlighted the inequities faced by African Americans. Forms of protest and/or civil disobedience included boycotts such as the successful Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955--1956) in Alabama; sit-ins such as the influential Greensboro sit-ins (1960) in North Carolina; marches, such as the Selma to Montgomery marches (1965) in Alabama; and a wide range of other nonviolent activities.
Noted legislative achievements during this phase of the Civil Rights Movement were passage of Civil Rights Act of 1964, that banned discrimination based on race, color, religion, or national origin in employment practices and public accommodations; the Voting Rights Act of 1965, that restored and protected voting rights; the Immigration and Nationality Services Act of 1965, that dramatically opened entry to the U.S. to immigrants other than traditional European groups; and the Fair Housing Act of 1968, that banned discrimination in the sale or rental of housing. African Americans re-entered politics in the South, and across the country young people were inspired to action.
Desegregation busing in the United States (also known as forced busing or simply busing) is the practice of assigning and transporting students to schools in such a manner as to redress prior racial segregation of schools, or to overcome the effects of residential segregation on local school demographics.
