Belfast and the Best of Northern Ireland
Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide | We start in bustling Belfast's City Hall and Ulster Museum, then head out to Northern Ireland's favorite resort: Portrush, along the Antrim Coast, where we taste-test Irish whiskey, scramble over some six-sided geology in the Giant's Causeway, drop in on a world-class golf course, and stomp our feet to some traditional music.

Belfast – Come to the northeast coast of Ireland to experience an eclectic mix of history and modernity. Follow our journey to Belfast and start planning one of your own.
When ready, browse vacation packages to Belfast:
Scattered throughout the countryside of #Belfast, you’ll find Iron Age forts, medieval castles, and more modern construction dating to the 20th century. Belfast got on the fast track to modernizing in the 19th century, when it became known as a shipbuilding mecca. Among the famous vessels built at Belfast through the decades are the RMS Titanic and its sister ships, Olympic and Britannic.
A great deal of Belfast’s modern identity stems from over three decades of political and religious strife. These issues have influenced much of the city’s public art, as a great number of murals and statues depict people and events from those times.
Belfast makes a great #vacation destination. The city is easily navigable on foot, and you never know what sort of delightful gallery, park, or restaurant you’re going to find just around the bend.
For now, we hope you enjoy watching this #travel #guide as much as we enjoyed making it.

Hit the North, Street Art by Friz Joy's Entry Belfast
This gable wall mural street art work in Joy's Entry by Friz, dates from Culture Night September 2015 when street artists from near and far were encouraged to make their mark on walls down at Belfast's Cathedral Quarter.
The art, which would not look out of place in any gallery features the work of some of the best street artists in Northern Ireland, the Republic, Britain and Europe. Thirty walls were 'artified' by 30 artists in two days to coincide with Culture Night. The event was sponsored by Becks.
Curator Adam Turkington of Seedhead Arts stated, An artist from Madrid told me that in terms of street art, Belfast is now way ahead of other modern European cities so I think that is something to be proud of, he said. If you commissioned commercially any of these paintings, you could pay up to £15,000 each, so that's something to think about, he added. We really do have a valuable outdoor art collection to be treasured.
This is just one example by well known street artist Marian Noone aka Friz.
Biography
Friz is a Belfast based artist who works in both traditional and digital mediums. She is part of the SPOOM Collective and the Minaw Collective. Her works have been included in group exhibitions in Sligo, Belfast and Dublin.
Marian studied Classical Animation in BCFE Dublin and Illustration in Telford College Edinburgh. Her work as Friz is populated by strong female characters with inspiration from mythology and fauna. The artists’ biggest influence was studying classical animation where she learned to develop her fundamental drawing skills.

An Atheist's Day in Belfast..A Story.
Most people in the North and South of Ireland want a peaceful life...but not all...some feel empowered by violence.
This vandalising was a simple act with a simple message...but it has dark undercurrents...for me at least.
They actually damaged more than the mirror but I kept it simple for the story..
I DON'T KNOW why this video has 2 BLACK FRAMES...not my doing...!
It was brilliant to see the Museum so packed with enthusiastic children...despite my 'poetic' comment on them...done for effect !

Belfast Optic, Great Light Project, Titanic Slipways
I'm down on theTitanic slipway to check out on how far the Great Light Project is coming along.
The Titanic Foundation and the Commissioner of Irish Lights are working to save the wonderful unique Mew Island Lighthouse Optic by bringing it to the Titanic Slipways so that it can be housed and displayed as an added visitor attraction. The optic is the machine which gave Mew Island Lighthouse its traditional revolving light. It is the world’s first and largest hyper-radial Fresnel lighthouse lens, first installed in Tory Island Lighthouse in 1887 then reconfigured and moved to Mew Island in 1928.
The optic was removed from Mew Island Lighthouse in 2014 as the lighthouse was modernised and converted to solar power.
Mew Island Lighthouse optic is one of the largest optic of its kind ever built in the world, and is around 130 years old. Weighing 10 tonnes and measuring 7 metres tall, the optic is a unique heritage object with significance to Belfast’s economic, maritime and industrial past. The Mew island ligthouse optic was only 1 of 29 similar Hyper Radial Lenses. As such it is a thing of rare beauty.
Mew Island lighthouse, on the outermost of the Copeland Islands, is one of the tallest lighthouses in Ireland. The island was an important Aid to Navigation at the southern entrance to Belfast Lough, built at a time when Belfast was the world-centre of linen, ship-building and rope-making, and one of the most important ports in the world. The optic was removed when the lighthouse was updated and automated in 2014.
The plan is that the optic will be restored and housed in a new interpretive structure, designed to last for 100 years and made to resemble a lighthouse lantern room where it will add a remarkable element to the Titanic Quarter public realm.
The optic will be displayed in a landmark curved glass structure in its new location on the Titanic Walkway, which is currently being developed by Titanic Quarter Limited and funded by Tourism Northern Ireland. The 500 metres of maritime walkway will connect the Titanic and Olympic Slipways and the Alexandra Dock, linking Titanic Belfast, HMS Caroline and the Thompson Dock. The optic building will be completed during the winter of 2017 and open to the public in January 2018.
TITANIC FOUNDATION
Preserving Belfast’s maritime and industrial heritage
The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) gave an award of £332,000 to restore and interpret the former Mew Island Lighthouse Optic and put it on public display in Belfast's Titanic Quarter. Further support was given by Belfast City Council, Ulster Garden Villages and The N Ireland Tourist board.
Shankill Road Belfast
We spent a couple of days in Belfast during November 2013. These are video clips / images from a trip to the famous Shankill Road which is a staunchly British area of the city.
From Belfast to Jerusalem: Eran Tsidkyahu (12)
The Jerusalem Belfast Forum was established by IPCRI in 2016, based on the belief that cities which have endured prolonged conflict and divisions can learn from each other, while acknowledging that the conflicts are different and manifested differently in each city.
12 Jerusalemite activists, Palestinian and Israeli from a variety of professions, were accepted into the Forum, with the aim of infusing creativity and best practices into their efforts to improve the experience of Jerusalem for all who live there.
The members took a series of seminars, using the latest research on Jerusalem from an urban perspective, including demographic trends, gender, and implications of current policies on the local communities.
Following these seminars, they traveled to Northern Ireland to tour Belfast and meet a variety of local players, all of whom were deeply and directly involved in the violent conflict and building the peace, and who strive to overcome the persisting divisions that still exist in Belfast today.
