In 1981 - 82 I worked on the American Air Base USAF Bentwaters as an apprentice electrician. It was an interesting time. I took the opportunity to go on a walk round the airfield, organised by BCWM (Bentwaters Cold War Museum) It was a long walk, nearly four hours, but very interesting to see it now. A lot still remains. Here is the video of my trip.

RAF Bentwaters Parks near Rendlesham forest. We love all the old cold war buildings and scary military feel of the place. When we visited the base was in transition from military to public usage, many of the areas appeared off limits to the public.
Bentwaters Airforce Base Woodbridge Suffolk 81st Fighter Wing
Royal Air Force Bentwaters, now known as Bentwaters Parks, is a former Royal Air Force station about 80 miles from London and 10 miles from Ipswich, near Woodbridge, Suffolk. It was used by the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the Second World War, and by the United States Air Force (USAF) during the Cold War, being the primary home for the 81st Fighter Wing under various designations from 1951 to 1993.

RAF BENTWATERS former US airbase.
This is a short video montage of our day trip to the former cold war airbase at R.A,F, Bentwaters. The base was built almost entirely by the Americans when they took over what the R.A.F. had left, which were a few old nissin huts and an odment of brick structures. The base is now let out as various industrial and storage units including temperature controlled storage of vintage wines, classic cars and various agricultural uses including a biogas 5mgw generating plant. The site also houses possibly the countries largest collection of vintage tractors that the site owner has been collecting since he was a schoolboy in 1948.
