#11 UBUD COOKING CLASS AND PALACE
We started the day with a walk up Monkey Forest Road to have a look around Ubud Palace. There are so many shops on the way and most are selling pretty much the same tourist souvenirs. We come to an alley and an artist was selling his paintings and drawings on the wall of the alley. We brought 3 hand drawn postcards from him.
At the end of Monkey Forest Road is the Palace. It was free entry and its a good job because its pretty small and not too much to see. We were done in 10 minutes.
We walked back down to a restaurant where we had booked to do a cooking class. We started by chopping the spices to make the Balinese spice paste which went into most of the dishes. We then used a giant pestle and mortar to grind it all together. It smelt fantastic.
We made several dishes throughout the lesson including one which used the stalk of a banana tree. It was actually really tasty.
Our favourite was the peanut sauce and the papaya salad but it was all very delicious. We were stuffed by the end of the course!
We love our food so we love to do a cooking class in most of the countries we visit if we can. Indonesian food is definitely a winner!

Making Jamu in Ubud
“Jamu” simply means medicine in Balinese and there is a jamu for pretty much any ailment, all of them made with only plants, herbs and nuts. Every Gendong has got their own spin on the recipes, adding spices and herbs as they see fit. Balinese drink their jamu daily as a health tonic, and let me tell you right now that it can be very strong tasting. I like it a lot! I think it tastes healthy. This comes from someone who loves wheatgrass and durian, so buyer beware. The jamu most widely available (to tourists at least) is the bright orange one made of turmeric, ginger and tamarind. It’s the only one I have tasted, but I thought jamu was such a wonderful tradition - and I am a strong believer in food and plant healing - that I wanted to find out more. So I took a jamu making class at Angelo's in Central Ubud. You can find the full recipe and some substitutions on my blog at
We later went to a traditional Legong dance show at the Palace.
We loved Ubud so much!

[Super Juice] Indonesian Jamu | SheDoesLiving
Jamu is a unique traditional Indonesian tonic, that is said to be the cure-all for all kinds of ailments and problems; it is a 'super juice'!
Since I've been feeling really under the weather, this is the perfect time to make it.
My immune system is definitely crying out for a much needed boost.
Please excuse the over editing, I had to cut out all my sneezing, sniffling and dazed staring into space. ^_^
I made this on the same day as my 'Hearty Chicken soup', which can be found here:

These people have falls throughout the day to keep the Ramadan fasting had to prepare dinner. His wife was busy preparing a lot of food for inviting me. The month of Ramadan to invite other family members or friends to eat dinner together. It referred to old customs. Where rice is a staple of the people. Just the fact that we are eating sticky rice than I was only able to eat rice, I became happy enough. Noodles stir-fried, stir-fried shrimp, crab stir-fried. Roasted dishes that are almost oil. It referred to because the food is easily perishable in hot weather. Because rice is a food without knowing whether they fit perfectly in your mouth.

Indonesian Street Food - GIANT Fried Rice in Jakarta, Indonesia (Nasi Goreng Kambing Kebon Sirih)!

Nasi Goreng Kambing Kebon Sirih is a legendary Jakarta street food stall that serves nasi goreng kambing (goat fried rice) in a huge way! Although some say that their fame has made them not as good as they previously were, I still think it’s an amazing place with an action packed street food atmosphere that you need to try when you’re in Jakarta.
I watched them making this Indonesian street food specialty and rather than normal fried rice with is dry fried in a wok, this is actually almost more like a biryani. The meat is cooked in a curry like sauce, before a huge amount of rice is added.
The rice was very fragrant with lots of cinnamon and spices added. The meat, some of it was quite tender, while other pieces were a little grizzly, but had wonderful meaty flavor.
When you’re in Jakarta and looking for a legendary Indonesian street food stall, Nasi Goreng Kambing Kebon Sirih is a great place to go for nasi goreng kambing (goat fried rice).
