Today I talk to Peter Blee, rector of Berwick Church where there are some incredible paintings.
The Bloomsbury paintings in Berwick Church are an unique and complete example of the decoration of the interior of a Grade I listed parish church in the UK by 20th century artists, Duncan Grant, Vanessa Bell, and Quentin Bell.

BERWICK CHURCH ST MICHAEL AND ALL ANGELS. 1080p HD
Part of the United Benefice of Arlington, Berwick, Selmeston-with-Alciston and Wilmington, the church dedicated to St Michael and All Angels, is a Grade 1 listed building.[4] Built on what may be a pre-Christian sacred site, the church dates back at least to the 12th century, although the Saxon frontage appears to be earlier.[5] Additions were made in the 14th century, and a tower built in 1603, originally with a spire. The building suffered in the 18th century, losing its spire to lightning on 8 August 1773.
Several Victorian leaded windows were damaged by World War II bombs on 17 October 1944. They were replaced by clear glass, unusual in churches, for fear of further damage. However, some of the church's stained-glass windows survived.
The clear-glass windows help to illuminate the church's unique murals. Partly inspired by the pre-Reformation practice of decorating churches with murals, these were painted during in 1941 by Duncan Grant, Vanessa Bell, and Quentin Bell, all of the Bloomsbury set. The murals depict local people, sometimes in period clothes, but set in biblical scenes.

Berwick castle wall and Scotland / England Border.
The castle was founded in the 12th century by the Scottish King David 1. In 1296-8, the English King Edward 1 had the castle rebuuilt and the town fortified, before it was returned to Scotland. In 1330 Domino Roberto de Lawedre of the Bass described as Custodian or Keeper of the Marches and the Castle of Berwick-upon-Tweed, received, apparently upon the termination of his employment there, £33. 6s.8p, plus a similar amount, from the Scottish Exchequer. The town and castle changed hands several times during the English-Scottish conflicts.
In 1464 The exchequer Rolls of Scotland record that Robert Lauder of Edrington was paid £20 for repairs made to Berwick Castle. In the 16
th century, during the reign of Elizabeth 1, the walls were strengthened with the addition of two semi-circular artillery flanking towers, one at the river's edge and the other on the angle of the curtain wall.
The English - Scottish border is the official border and mark of entry between Scotland and England. For centuries until the Union of the Crowns, the region on either side of the boundary was a lawless territory suffering from the repeated raids in each direction of the Border Reivers. Following the Treaty of Union 1707 which united Scotland and England to form the Kingdom of Great Britain, the Border continues to form the boundary of two distinct legal jurisdictions as the treaty between the two countries guaranteed the continued separation of English law and Scots law.

Bell Ringing at Berwick Town Hall
Excerpts of a quarter peal of Grandsire Triples rung at Berwick Town Hall by local ringers and friends from Sussex at the start of their ringing and walking week.
The Town Hall was built between 1750 and 1756. Its steeple rising high above Marygate is equipped with a peal of 8 bells cast in 1754 by Lester & Pack of Whitechapel. These bells form the second civic ring of bells in England after Morpeth Clock Tower (1706).
Of these bells, only half remain. The second bell was recast by Charles Carr of Smethwick in 1894 while bells 5, 6, and 7 were replaced with bells from St Thomas' Church in Stourbridge, West Midlands as part of the millennium restoration. The original 5, 6 and 7 bells had been cracked by the chiming apparatus by council workmen in the 1950s which lead to the whole peal being silenced for nearly half a century.
Happily, the bells were restored in 1999 in time to ring in the new millennium. The bells were retuned and have come up quite nicely, producing a stately (if a bit growly) sound. Hayward Mills were commissioned to undertake the rehang and what a fine job they did. After nearly 18 years, they all go smoothly, just like new.
A must grab for bell ringers to say they have rung on the most northerly bells in England. There can be few towers where one must walk through an 18th century court room and jail in order to reach the ringing chamber!

No 10 Downing Street has announced that Her Majesty The Queen has approved the nomination of the Reverend Canon Mark Tanner MA (Oxon), BA (Hons), MTh, Warden of Cranmer Hall and Vice-Principal of St John’s College, University of Durham, as Suffragan Bishop of Berwick in the Diocese of Newcastle.
A series of events are being held today (Thursday 1st September) as Canon Mark tours the Diocese.
