Cracking bullwhips for fun
We spotted this guy outside the National Art Museum of China, along with a few chums, cracking bullwhips and using them on spinning tops. The audio doesn't quite do justice to the noise made by these things.
One question though. Where do you buy a bullwhip in Beijing?! Answers on a postcard please.

After months of construction, the new Drum & Bell Tower Square has suddenly, unexpectedly been unveiled...and it's better than we thought!
Seemingly entirely pedestrianised, the Disneyland/Qianmen style shopping nightmare we had envisioned for the edges of the square doesn't seem to have materialised. Yet.

The Hong Kong tailor that's become a sartorial institution | Remarkable Living
Established in 1953 and named after its founder, Ascot Chang is one of Hong Kong’s most famous shirt and suit makers. Besides its exceptional workmanship and quality, the business has also come to be known for a speciality – its Shanghai style that fuses Russian, British, Japanese and Chinese tailoring techniques.
“My grandfather originally was from Shanghai. When he got to Hong Kong, he basically was living in a relative’s balcony area and started to go door-to-door measuring people for shirts. Back then, there were a lot of Shanghainese businessmen, who were accustomed to getting bespoke shirts made to certain standards that they wouldn’t find in Hong Kong,” said Justin Chang, who represents the third generation of the family-run business as deputy managing director. Rolls-Royce Pinnacle Travel Phantom In Beijing
Reportedly, Rolls-Royce has unveiled the Pinnacle Travel Phantom, ahead of its debut at Auto China.
It is designed to celebrate the Chinese love of travel and the success of the Bespoke program in China. The Pinnacle Travel Phantom has a two-tone exterior with a Madeira Red coach line and a motif of a streamlined train travelling at speed.
While the exterior changes are relatively limited, the company says the cabin has the most complex, beautifully hand-crafted marquetry ever seen in a Rolls-Royce.
Besides the complex inlays, there's Morello Red and Seashell leather upholstery and specifically developed Morello Red lamb's wool floor mats. The model also has fabric cushions, a starlight headliner and a rear partition.
Exclusively developed for Chinese customers, it too is one of its kinds.

BEIJING! Part 1
Finally visited Beijing and fell in love with the place (or the company).
So Beijing saw me having a new friend, E.T, and eating almost every single minute. Visited a bespoke bar, and was weirded out by the entire ambiance (in a good way), ate peking duck and woah, I don't know how am i going to eat duck again - it was mindblowing.
Saw me also walking through Tian Tan park, where the famous Temple of Heaven is. This place spans 2.7mil square meters - BIGGER THAN THE FORBIDDEN CITY. It is stunning, as I walked, I tried to paint a picture of how busy this place was back in the day. Was also awed by the chinese use of the theory of sound wave when we visited the Echo Wall, and the Circular Mound Alter (though I'm pretty certain people sounded louder cause they were shouting).

CHINA: SHANGHAI: NEW OPERA THEATRE NEARS COMPLETION
Mandarin/Eng/Nat
The skyline of the Chinese city of Shanghai is being transformed by a series of prestigious building developments aimed at showcasing the city's new confidence.
Following a new museum devoted to Chinese art which opened last year, a stunning new Opera Theatre costing more than 120 (m) million U-S dollars is nearing completion.
But it is not an entirely Chinese achievement, as architects and engineers from around the world have been involved.
It has been designed by the French, build by the Chinese, furnished by the Canadians and glazed by the Germans.
The new developments are part of an effort by the Shanghai municipality to soften the atmosphere of the city.
Shanghai is better known as a financial centre than a cultural one.
Although that is unlikely to change, a number of high profile projects are creating a new look for the city.
The modern structure of the Opera Theatre stands in contrast to the old colonial buildings built at the turn of the century.
But the theatre is not an entirely Chinese achievement.
The architect was a French man, a German company was responsible for the glasswork and a Canadian company for the interior design.
They have all co-operated with Chinese engineers to create the eye catching new theatre.
One of the biggest challenges the team faced was supporting the roof which is made of a single piece of metal.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
The roof is a huge iron frame weighing more than 6-thousand tonnes. It would have been difficult to assemble it on the top so we decided to put it together on the ground and then lift it up. It worked but it took us 21 hours alone to elevate it to 40 metres high. But it was successful.
SUPER CAPTION: Zhu Jialin, Deputy General Engineer, Shanghai Grand Theatre
The building includes some original features.
They include heat reducing metallic quadrangles on the glass which are designed to deflect heat and give opera goers some relief from the hot Shanghai summers.
But more traditional materials dominate the building, with marble covering the walls and floor.
This guard wears covers on his shoes to prevent damage to the fragile surface.
Architects who have visited the building have been impressed with the design.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I think the strength of this project is tremendous transparency for the city and I wish I could see it in the evening when it is all lit up. I also like this project because it is low rise and very sculptural in a city which is becoming high rise and a little bit hard so it gives a bit of softening to the city with a park in front and it has a more human scale than some of the towers around us. I think this project will be a wonderful addition to Shanghai and its people.
SUPER CAPTION: Ann R. Chaintreuil, President, US National Council of Architectural Registration Board
When completed the theatre will seat more than 18-hundred people on the ground floor with more on the three balconies.
The supports for the vast main stage are still being constructed.
The whole project has cost the Shanghai municipality one (b) billion yuan (more than 120 (m) million U-S dollars), and has taken nearly 4 years to complete.
Projects like this one, and the nearby museum, are intended to establish Shanghai as an international cultural centre for the next millennium.
