St John's, Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada
St John's in Newfoundland & Labrador
St. John's, the capital of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, is the perfect combination of big-city luxury and small-town charm. As the oldest and most easterly city in North America, this is where heritage lives. Melded with culture, history, and personality, St. John's has survived two World Wars, five centuries, countless hardships and triumphs. It's become a rare, old city full of character, experience and charisma, with a contemporary, sophisticated edge.
Wander down the narrow, criss-crossing streets carved by horse and carriage over 100 years ago. Pass the colourful jellybean row houses wedged together in every space lining the sides of steep hills and hidden alleyways. Once you've meandered down to the working harbour of the waterfront, look towards the Narrows and imagine a time when the waters were brimming full with fishing schooners.
Visit Quidi Vidi, the charming village-within-a-city, which still embodies the spirit of an old fishing outport. Then, hike up nearby Signal Hill through the famous Battery, where tiny wooden homes still cling valiantly to cliffsides ravaged by ocean waves. The unmistakable, iconic Cabot Tower guards the top of Signal Hill, where military men guarded the shores throughout the 1700s and 1800s. Here, Marconi famously received his first transmission across the Atlantic in 1901. Look out over the cliffs and watch the city's harbour and captivating skyline spread out before you. Perched on the top of the horizon is The Rooms, home to the provincial museum, art gallery and archives, standing next to the striking twin clock towers of the Basilica of St. John the Baptist.
As you explore the history of this place, shop at the many fine boutiques, shops, cafés, restaurants, pubs, and art galleries lining the streets. In the evening, sit back, relax, and enjoy live music or local theatre where actors will whisk you away to another place and time.
For nightlife excitement, head to the famous George Street. Here, clubs, pubs, bars, and restaurants are stacked and crammed. Every evening, George Street blazes with energy, especially during the George Street Festival -- five days and nights of dynamic musical entertainment.
Here in St. John's, courteous and lively people will treat you as friends -- willing to send you in the right direction, help you on your way, or even take you there. Always happy to tell a tale, no matter how tall, just to make you smile. Certainly, this city is like no other.
Getting Here:
St. John's, the capital city of Newfoundland and Labrador, is the most easterly point in North America, located at the beginning of the Trans-Canada Highway Route 1, just 3 hours from Toronto, 4 from New York and 4.5 from London England.

Hiking the Rugged East Coast Trail in Newfoundland, Canada
At the far eastern edge of North America lies a hidden gem. The East Coast Trail has been in development for 24 years, yet some sections make you feel like the first explorer to arrive as you are taken by natures majesty. Getting to hike there felt like a real opportunity to showcase a place and a trail that more people MUST know about. Just spend a few minutes talking with the dedicated crew of people behind the trail and you will know there’s something special there. And then when you actually step out onto that rocky coastal trail, you’ll be even more surprised.
The East Coast Trail is about 300 kilometres long and follows the rugged east coast from St. Johns down the Avalon Peninsula. There are some truly unique features, such as The Spout, where a geyser-like eruption happens every 15 seconds. There are hundreds of waterfalls cascading into the ocean, arches, and towers. Throw in some fresh seafood (including the raw scallop that served as my birthday cake) and you've got yourself one heck of a hiking trip—it's all remarkable.
Newfoundland was amazing and getting to hike the East Coast Trail and meet the people along the way was a big highlight of my year. I hope you enjoy this episode of Trackin' Dirt and that it inspires you to potentially make the journey yourself!

A Signal Hill Hike, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador (by Peter Bull, Newfoundland)
There is no shortage of hikes to take in St. John's. One of my favorites is around Signal Hill - the North Head Trail. Before starting our hike we went to the Park's intrepretive center. There we learned about the many battles between the French and English that have taken place on its rocky slopes. Discovering this history before the hike brought the hill to life for Ronan and Cormac. There is also history related to the Second World War and the defense from U-boats. Great stuff for little boy's (and my) imagination while hiking. This moderate-difficult 1.7 kilometer hike takes about 90 minutes and gives views of other places to explore like Cape Spear and Fort Amherst. These places are on our list to visit on our next trip to St. John's.
Whale watching in Newfoundland Bay Bulls Twillingate St John’s Tours JJCAT
Watching whales in Newfoundland is best at Bay Bulls near St. John’s Newfoundland. Watch Humpback whales or orcas off the coast or on a boat tour. We did O’Briens boat tours in Bay bulls and saw many whales. The whales in this video are from Bay Bulls Newfoundland.
You can see a whale Breach which is when a whale leaps head first out of the water and hits back down on their back or side. This breaching whale is a sight to see. At Cape Spears Newfoundland you can watch whales from the look out.
With 22 different whale species in Newfoundland and Labrador it is one of the most spectacular whale watching locations in the world. These whales can be seen breaching the surface of the water and playing along the shore. Catching a single glimpse is an awesome experience whether it's during a boat tour, sea kayaking or hiking a coastal trail.
We went to Twillingate Newfoundland and also to cape spear newfoundland which is 15 minutes from St. John’s to watch whales. We didn’t see any whales on those boat tours until we did our final tour in Bay Bulls where we saw over 20 whales. However on the next day we drove to Cape Spear and we could see whales from the look out. It wasn’t as good as being close to them in a tour boat, but it was still a sight to see
We also saw puffins, porpoise, and seals. This video is from JJCAT
SIGNAL HILL NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE - CANADA SERIES - THINGS TO DO IN NEWFOUNDLAND (EP 190)
Last summer was one of the best summers in St. John's Newfoundland. I was very fortunate to find some really lovely friends who took me around and helped me explore the place. This quaint little city always has something to offer. Signal Hill is very sought to place for many locals and tourists because of its location and history. The wild blueberries picking is cherry on the icing for those who like a chic experience in this rugged rocky city.
