Isle of Wight Extras I
Help support my channel:
From Wikipedia: The Isle of Wight /ˈaɪl əv ˈwaɪt/, is a county and the largest and second most populous island of England. It is located in the English Channel, about 4 mi (6 km) off the coast of Hampshire and is separated from mainland Great Britain by the Solent. The island has several resorts which have been holiday destinations since Victorian times.
The history of the Isle of Wight includes a brief period of time as an independent kingdom in the 15th century. Until 1995, like Jersey and Guernsey, the island had a Governor.
Home to the poets Swinburne and Tennyson and to Queen Victoria, who built her much-loved summer residence and final home Osborne House at East Cowes, the island has a maritime and industrial tradition including boat building, sail making, the manufacture of flying boats, the world's first hovercraft, and the testing and development of Britain's space rockets. The Isle hosts annual festivals including the Bestival and the Isle of Wight Festival, which, in 1970, was the largest rock music event ever held. The island has well-conserved wildlife and some of the richest cliffs and quarries for dinosaur fossils in Europe.
The Isle of Wight was part of the County of Southampton until 1890, when it became an independent administrative county. Until 1974 it continued to share its Lord Lieutenant with Hampshire, when it was reconstituted as a non-metropolitan ceremonial county which gave it its own Lord Lieutenant and was recognised as a postal county.

Hovercraft Leaving Ryde - Isle Of Wight - Hovertravel Solent Flyer - 2nd January 2019 | kittikoko
Hovertravel is a ferry company operating from Southsea, Portsmouth to Ryde, Isle of Wight, UK. It is the only passenger hovercraft company currently operating in Britain since Hoverspeed stopped using its craft in favour of catamarans. Hovertravel is now the world's oldest hovercraft operator, and this service is believed to be unique in western Europe. The service commenced operations in 1965 and currently operates two hovercraft on a single route between Ryde and Southsea, although it formerly operated also between Ryde and Gosport, and Cowes and Southampton.
The service operates between Southsea Common on the English mainland and Ryde Transport Interchange on the Isle of Wight: the crossing time of less than 10 minutes makes it the fastest route across The Solent from land to land.

Cranmore - Dec 2016
Whenever we are out on the boat in the Western Solent, I can't help admiring the fantastic location of a solitary house near Cranmore on the island. From the water it looks fantastic, so always wondered why it would look like a little closer.... So I took the drone for a little flight around the Cranmore area.
If I win the lottery, it might be on my list of things to buy! :)

SUGGESTED LEAD-IN:
The world's largest arms-show has been held near London in the UK.
The Defence Systems and Equipment exhibition, backed by the British Ministry of Defence, is a showcase for new and future defence technologies -- everything from improved clothing for soldiers to weapons and even warships.
This year an extra four million pounds was reportedly spent on security at the event, and demonstrators opposed to the global arms trade protested outside the venue -- a sprawling exhibition site beside a deepwater dock on the Thames.
VOICE-OVER:
A team of British Army soldiers staged a waterborne display at London's Royal Docks during the exhibition.
Landing in a new kind of high-speed boat, at a pontoon bridge rigged as a floating wharf, the soldiers demonstrated some of the latest tools in the British arsenal.
Among those tools is the Starstreak anti-aircraft missile, which can be readied and fired from the shoulder by soldiers in the field.
The supersonic, laser guided missile is also effective against ground vehicles.
It's three warheads fly at four-times the speed of sound, following a laser trail to the target.
The Starstreak is used in a range of weapons systems, including this multiple-launcher.
Explosives-disposal robots have become important in Iraq, where Coalition forces are threatened by roadside bomb attacks.
Under the control of its operator, this latest model can manoeuvre past obstacles and dismantle a bomb using a formidable on-board tool-kit.
This was the world's biggest defence show, held at a venue so large that six warships were moored alongside.

Isle of Wight Christmas Toy Appeal
There are many children living on the Isle of Wight who, for a variety of reasons, might be considered less fortunate (such as young carers, the sick, and those living in poverty).
The IOW Christmas Toy Appeal (powered by Bestival) believes that every child deserves to feel special at Christmas. We are working closely with the Isle of Wight Council and local charities to ensure that your donations will reach the children who need them most.
Islanders are being invited to drop-off a new unwrapped toy or gift to the IOW Christmas Toy Appeal (open from 19th November - 14th December) at one of the many official drop-off points dotted right across the Island (NB please see full list below). The IOW Christmas Toy Appeal volunteers will then wrap all gifts and distribute them amongst those less fortunate this Christmas.
