Exploring Beit Shean in Israel
Bet She’an National Park houses the spectacular ruins of the Roman and Byzantine city of Bet She’an. It played an important role in history due to its geographical location at the junction of the Jordan River Valley and the Jezreel Valley. We are joined by Shaul who tells the story of his grandfather discovering the once lost Roman city.

# 135 Ad – The 3rd revolt against the Romans went very bad for the Jews of Judea, about 600000 were killed in the land, the survivors either died of hunger or were sold into slavery. Jews were banned from entering the city of Jerusalem in pain of death.
However, the Jews living in Zippori were spared because they did not wish to join the revolt.
The Sanhedrin (Rabbinical court) moved to Zippori making it the center of Jewish learning center. This is where Rabbi Yehuda Hanasi put to writing the Mishna (written collection of oral traditions).
Jews always desired to be buried in Jerusalem but were not allowed to do so by the Romans. So when Rabbi Yehuda died, he was buried at Beit Shearim, not far from Zippori.
Rich Jews from countries nearby who wanted to be buried in the Holy Land, now chose to be buried near the Rabbi's cave.
# In 1936, the catacombs were discovered because of a breach in one of the walls. More than 30 man made burial cave and tunnel systems with hundreds of coffins belong to Jews were found, including that of Rabbi Yehuda Hanasi.
Today, Beit Shearim is a National Park with some of the caves being allowed for visitors to enter.

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

Bet She’an – A Tel with a Theater, Toilets, Temple and more…
Bet She’an, also spelled Beit She’an and Beth Shan (in the Bible) is the biggest archaeological dig in Israel, a Tel of 17 levels, a man-made mound with many generations building in the same spot. It is one of the most ancient cities in the Holy Land having been first settled about 7,000 years ago. Later, in the biblical era, Philistines conquered it. At nearby by Mt. Gilboa, King Saul and three of his sons die while battling the Philistines, who subsequently display the bodies of the royal on the walls of the city of Bet She’an. Still later, it became a thriving city of 30,000 to 40,000 inhabitants in the Roman world. Today, you can see the ruins of a Roman town from Jesus’ time and ruins of a Byzantine town. There are ruins of a theater, amphitheater, hippodrome, baths, swimming pools, a temple and public buildings, a “Cardo” (the main street in ancient Roman cities that were lined with shops and with mosaic sidewalks), a Roman bridge and a Crusader fortress. (During our pilgrimage in Israel our group stayed a two hotels - in the Galilee (Tiberias) and in Jerusalem. The toilet paper in the Tiberias hotel had imprints of puppy dogs and the toilet paper in the Jerusalem hotel had imprints of rosebuds. You will hear our guide refer to puppy dog toilet paper in this video!)
