Big Four Ice Caves, Granite Falls, Washington, Snowshoe Hiking
We took the short 1.1 mile hike up to Big Four in hopes of doing some snowshoeing around the top.. Lack of snow right now is sad, to say the least.

Big Four Ice Caves---Day Trip---PNW---Washington
It was a nice winter morning and we decided for a day trip to Big Four Ice Caves, a great place to visit. However, once we arrived there, we've found out that the road was closed approximately 2 miles ahead which added about an hour more to our scheduled timeline. So, unfortunately we could not go all the way to the cave due to the fact that it was getting dark and we were not prepared to stay longer. However, it was a great trip and we're happy to share our journey with you. The details below,
Place: Big Four Ice Caves
Distance: 70 miles from Seattle Downtown
Time to travel: 1hr 50 min (One Way from/to Seattle)
Hike: 2 mile loop
Suggestion: Take Hiking boots and gloves in winter and also in winter season, try to go there a little early.
Remarks: A great place for a day trip
Camera used: Canon EOS Rebel T6

One of Big Four's ice caves, ca. 2005
Big Four Mountain is a mountain in the Cascade Range of Washington, located 21 miles (34 km) east of Granite Falls. The mountain is about 6,180 ft (1,880 m) high. At the bottom of its steep, 4,200 ft (1,300 m) high north face, debris piles form from avalanches and are able to remain there year round because of the continuous shade provided by the mountain. At an elevation between 2,450 ft (750 m) and 1,950 ft (590 m), this ice forms the lowest-elevation glacier in the lower 49 states.[1] During the summer, snow-melt streams flow beneath the debris piles and cause caves to be formed in the ice.
The trail
The Big Four Ice Caves Trail, a designated National Recreation Trail,[1] (#723) is one of the most popular hikes in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest attracting over 50,000 visitors per year. Frequently exceeding several hundred hikers per day, the trailhead's two separate parking areas are often filled beyond capacity occasionally forcing hikers to park along neighboring Mountain Loop Road.
A severe autumn storm in November 2006 caused flooding of the South Fork Stillaguamish River destroying a major footbridge to the Big Four Ice Caves. Estimated repair costs to replace the damaged span were approximately $425,000, and repairs were completed in June 2009.[2] While the trail is open to the public, the snowfield itself was closed temporarily[3] due to cave-ins and slides which have killed four hikers in incidents in 1998, 2010, and in 2015.

Amazing Ice Caves in Washington State in the Pacific Northwest
* The mouth of this cave collapsed one week after I shot the video, killing 1 hiker and wounding 4 others.
Went for a great father's day daytrip out toward Mt Loop Highway that started with a picnic by the Big 4 Ice Caves and ended with some naked playing in the river with my 4 year old son while mom napped on a tapestry by the waterfall. Great day to celebrate fatherhood. y website is at
