Traverse City, MI - part one
The first three days of our Traverse City trip over the fourth of July week. We spent a lot of time on the beach, shopping downtown, hanging out at the National Cherry Festival, and exploring the Grand Traverse Commons Village.
UTR 401 25 Promo
On this, our fiftieth episode of Under The Radar Michigan, we explore Michigan's incredible Leelanau Peninsula. On the way up, we make a stop in beautiful Beulah for a drive around Crystal Lake, and a slice of Michigan tradition and history at The Cherry Hut. From there we make our way north to Empire for a classic Michigan beach, and some Grocer's Daughter Chocolates. Then we pile in the car and travel into the peninsula's interior to visit a winery that's rustic, raw and real. We'll also meet a chef who brought French country cuisine to Leelanau ... and head to Suttons Bay for chow that foodies are definitely finding at Martha's Leelanau Table. It's all right here in Michigan ... and right here on UTR.

Private charters ranging from 2 hours to a full day!
The classic yacht Scout will whisk you away on a luxurious private cruise for up to 6 guests. Sail the spectacular waters of Grand Traverse Bay for a couple of hours or take the whole day and head over the horizon. Perhaps you’d like to drop anchor and explore Power Island. Scout is yours while you’re aboard. We cater this adventure to your wishes. Make the most of it!
Cruise the Bay
Scout’s sailing tours may be scheduled for 2 or more hours, to a maximum of 9 hours. We can accommodate up to 6 guests in a private group charter. We want you to think of the vessel as your personal yacht during the time you’re aboard. Our USCG licensed captain is ready to tailor the cruising experience to your particular preferences.
Our standard 2 hour sail will encompass lower West Grand Traverse Bay, while a full day cruise can potentially go as far as Suttons Bay or Omena. Are you looking for a memorable family adventure? Be a castaway for a day with our Power Island Package! This gem of Grand Traverse Bay is located six miles north of Traverse City, and is part of the Grand Traverse County Parks system. The island is uninhabited (except for the park ranger) and offers great hiking, beach combing, swimming, sunbathing, picnicking, and general relaxation. We will sail up the bay, drop anchor, and ferry you to the island for 2-3 hours of fun! We wrap up the day with a cruise back to “civilization.”
While aboard, you may participate as much, or as little, as you like. Sit back and relax or jump right in and help pilot this magnificent vessel. Take the wheel, set sails, and crank winches; we’re happy to teach you about sailing! Don’t forget to pack your bathing suits! If the weather is appropriate we have the option of stopping for a swim call!
During our cruise you’ll enjoy complimentary snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. In addition you’re welcome to bring your own alcoholic drinks aboard and stock them in our fridge. Feel free to pack a meal for the trip.
About Scout
“From the moment we met Captain Brett at the dock, to the moment we returned, it was an amazing experience.”
Scout is a classic Cabo Rico 38 XL. Built in 1988 on a mountain site in Costa Rica, this lively cutter combines vintage design lines with modern construction technology. From her graceful clipper bow and wood deck trim to a stunning symphony of honey-IMG_1048colored teak (all sustainably plantation grown) below decks she will take your breath away. Brainchild of legendary naval architect W. I. B. Crealock, this vessel has won a reputation for soft motion and stout offshore performance. Scout is licensed and inspected by the state of Michigan to carry passengers.
Whether you prefer sipping a drink under the shade of the cockpit Bimini top, lounging below, or stretching out to sunbathe on deck, there is plenty of room for your group. Scout is well stocked with complimentary snacks, fruit and non-alcoholic beverages. We even have Moomers Ice Cream in the freezer! There is also plenty of refrigerator room to store any alcoholic beverages you would like to bring aboard.

▶︎ Ranger Review: Optic Nerve Sunglasses at Wild Cherry RV Resort
Campground Review:
Nestled in a private spot on the Leelanau Peninsula on the 45th north parallel and just a couple miles from Lake Leelanau (west) and Suttons Bay (east) beach, marina, and village is this quiet RV and tent campground. While trees line the perimeter and are speckled throughout the campground, all of the RV sites are completely open to the sun, making it an RV parking lot with grass. Each RV site comes with water and electrical hook-ups. While most RV campgrounds have centralized bathrooms with flush toilets, sinks, and showers, this one is lacking those amenities.
The tent camping area has 10 sites, is nestled in the trees, with a picnic table and fire ring at each site. In addition, there are 2 rustic cabins and 1 yurt nestled among the tent sites for those who aren’t interested in roughing it as much. There is a one pit toilet, a unique “tent shower,” and a central fresh water spigot for campers and those staying in the cabins.
There are 2 man-made ponds in the middle of the RV section of the campground, which sadly act more as mosquito breeding grounds than they do for water activities as they are quite small. There is also a new driving range above the campground for the golfers in the group.
The best part of this campground is its location. It is just a couple miles from either Suttons Bay and Lake Leelanau, and within walking/biking distance of 2 local wineries (Forty-Five North and Aurora), nice restaurants, and great backroads that are off the beaten path and away from nearly all traffic. The Forty-Five North Vineyard and Winery has a great walking/mountain biking trail in addition to a nice selection of very accessible wines, a great atmosphere, and super friendly staff! Hang out on their porch or play cornhole and bocce ball while you enjoy a glass of wine and a cheese plate.
