TEXAS Dance Hall Tour Garten Verein~ Galveston, Texas 1st Night
Featured Bands ~ Dale Watson & Asleep at the Wheel
Asleep at the Wheel has a long-standing tradition of “keeping Western Swing alive” (Wall Street Journal) and introducing the genre to a new generation. Frontman Ray Benson calls it “jazz with a cowboy hat,” and the unique combination of American blues, swing and traditional fiddling elements, along with its demanding musical chops, is what drew him to this style of American roots music back in 1970. A quick scan of awards, such as “Touring Band of the Year” (CMAs, 1976) and “Lifetime Achievement in Performance” (Americana Music Awards 2009), not to mention being 10-time Grammy Award winning, reflects the reputation of the band’s musicianship in the studio and on the road.
Taking a page from Bob Wills’ book, the band has constantly toured at a national level throughout its history with anywhere from 7-15 of the finest players Ray Benson could talk into jumping on the bus to play a string of dates. The alumni roster is well over 80+ members, and includes an impressive list of musicians who have gone on to perform with artists such as Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Lyle Lovett, Ryan Adams, and many more. Currently traveling as an 8-piece band, “The Wheel plays music that is timeless, infectious, and is meant for dancing” (Dallas Observer, 2014) – and there’s no better place to experience them live than on the Texas Dance Hall Tour!
Dale Watson
The Texas Troubadour, Dale Watson! Dale has flown the flag for classic honky-tonk for over two decades. He’s christened his brand of American roots “Ameripolitan” to differentiate it from current crop of Nashville-based pop country. The Alabama-born, Texas-raised Watson is a country music maverick, a true outlaw who stands alongside Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and George Strait as one of the finest country singers and songwriters from the Lone Star State.
Since the release of El Rancho Azul in 2013, Watson’s profile has risen considerably via appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman (CBS), Austin City Limits and The Sun Sessions (PBS) and as a guest on NPR’s Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me. A veteran touring artist and consummate entertainer, he is on the road more than 300 days a year. He also put his money where his heart is and took over ownership of two struggling Texas honky-tonks, the Little Longhorn Saloon in Austin (home of Chicken $#!+ Bingo) and The Big T Roadhouse in St. Hedwigs (outside San Antonio). If not on the road, he and His Lone Stars perform at one of them each Sunday.

Garten Verein
Garten Verein
In 1876, a group of German businessmen organized the Galveston Garten Verein (“garden club”) as a social club for family and friends. Construction of Garten Verein began in 1879, and the facility opened in 1880. The Garten Verein pavilion was restored in 1981 after a fire and in 1998, the entire Kempner Park and pavilion were refurbished to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Harris and Eliza Kempner Fund. The architect of the tiered octagonal dancing pavilion is unknown; it may have been Jon Moser, the city’s leading German architect. Garten Verein is managed by Galveston Historical Foundation.

A Context for Historic Texas Dance Halls: The development of the immigrant social halls in Texas
A Context for Historic Texas Dance Halls: The development of the immigrant social halls in Texas and their place in the history of settlement, music, and culture by Patrick Sparks
Built mostly by central European immigrants during the development of the southwestern frontier, the dance halls of Texas represent a unique lens through which to study Texas history and culture. Most are rural wood framed buildings, without interior decoration, yet possess a simple elegance.
Today we know of over five hundred halls (extant and lost). At one time there may have been as many as one thousand. The earliest halls were built c.1850, followed by appearance of large numbers of halls by the 1870s, with the building of halls declining after the 1930s.
The traditional dance halls of Texas are found in all major ethnic groups: German, Czech, Polish, Tejano, and African-American. They can be see, too, as part of a broader pattern of traditional music and dancing that, perhaps due to isolation, has persisted on the Gulf Coast from Mobile to Brownsville for over 150 years.
This presentation will explore the definition of the Texas dance hall; how the halls are distinct from other venues such as night clubs, honky-tonks, and bars; typical dance hall architectural types; and the social and cultural contribution of the halls to the heritage of the Lone Star State.

Luckenbach Texas: Visit Fredericksburg TX
First made world-famous by Waylon, Willie and the Boys almost 40-years ago in song, Luckenbach Texas is what legends are made of.
This tiny German community was first established as a trading post in 1849 and now the historic dancehall, general store and bar is a great place to sit back and enjoy live Texas music, great company and a cold one in the Hill Country.
Hi folks, I’m Daryl Whitworth, and I grew up just a few short miles from Luckenbach Texas. So close in fact, we could hear the music when Willie would hold his big Fourth of July picnic here years ago.
Today in Luckenbach Texas you’ll find the legendary dancehall – with one of the great old wooden dance floors and a fun place to two-step every weekend.
Pickers’ circles happen daily and musicians, locals and visitors alike are welcome to strum their guitar, sing along and or just relax under the 400 year old oak trees. That’s right- Luckenbach Texas is home to live music 364 days a year- everyday but Christmas Day.
There are also some one of a kind festivals here: such as the Live Free & Fly Fourth of July Festival, Luckenbach Blues Festival, and even the Hill Country Food Truck Festival, all of which feature great live music.
For more information on events and the music, go to VisitFredericksburgTX.com to plan your getaway.
So come out to Luckenbach Texas, Where “Everybody’s Somebody!”

Allens Boots Are Made For Dancing on yoloTX TV
Remember when we teamed up with Jay B. Sauceda, creator of Texas Humor, and made him Yolo, TX’s resident TEXpert? Jay B. met up with A.C. and showed us where true Texans buy their boots and how to break them in on the dance floor. Starting off at Allens Boots and ending the night at Broken Spoke is the recipe for a Texan evening.

Treasure Island Hotel and Casino Las Vegas
Treasure Island on the Las Vegas Strip, known simply as TI, is aptly named because of its many hidden treasures. A paradise for adults, it includes some of the hippest hangouts in town, a tropical pool area with a party tub, a variety of restaurants and the first permanent Cirque du Soleil show in Vegas.
The hotel's exterior features a sleek marquee with the TI initials. One of Treasure Island's big features is Gilley's Saloon, Dance Hall & Bar-B-Q, which has something for everyone. The saloon portion offers bikini bull riding contests, multiple bars, a stage, a dance floor and a big Texas attitude. The restaurant, which fronts the Strip, features barbecue-style favorites including ribs, big burgers and pork sliders. There's also an outdoor patio.
The rowdy Señor Frog's bar and restaurant, a party staple in Mexico, adds to the nightlife scene now.
Visitors flock to Vegas to relax, play and eat well, and Treasure Island has met the challenge of accommodating even the most sophisticated tourist, most aggressive card shark and most selective diner.
The hotel's spacious guest rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing spectacular views of the Strip. They also boast the exclusive Elite Sensational pillow-top beds, flat-screen LCD TVs, small refrigerators, private safes and large soaking bathtubs.
The sprawling casino includes a small but stylish poker room, a race and sports book, several thousand slot and video poker machines as well as plenty of table games.
Phil's Italian Steakhouse celebrates the best of Italian and American cuisines. The Vietnamese-themed Pho is a restaurant within a restaurant, located in The Coffee Shop. A world-class selection of dishes is also available for breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend champagne brunch in The Buffet at TI. And Little Richie's Chicago-Style Beef and Dogs is a hot dog stand situated near the poker room and sports book.
Included in Treasure Island's entertainment offerings is the visually stunning Mystère by Cirque du Soleil, now nearly through its second decade of highly acclaimed performances.
The hotel recently opened a highly interactive attraction for the masses. With state-of-the-art equipment, Marvel's Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N lets the whole family become secret agents. Top secret intelligence files, classified studies, and experiments lead you to a one-of-a-kind experience.
The pool features private cabanas and a party tub that fits 25 people. For some pampering, Oleksandra Spa & Salon offers luxurious treatments in a facility designed by a former Miss Universe contestant.
Topping it all off, the resort is conveniently located, offering a tram to the neighboring Mirage and a pedestrian bridge across Spring Mountain to the Fashion Show mall. There's also a three-story, 48,000-square-foot retail center on the northeast corner of the property opposite the Fashion Show mall that's anchored by CVS.
With the wealth of riches at Treasure Island, it's no wonder that once you've set sail with this crew, you'll never want to return to port again.
