Bicycle Touring Ep. 21: Amtrak Train from Austin to Chicago

(help contribute to our trip down the Mississippi River)
Sarah and Patrick here!
For our Independence Day we took our first long distance train from Austin, TX to Chicago, IL. After a few frustrating flights with our bikes we looked for an easier alternative to get closer to the head waters of the Mississippi River.
Amtrak allows you to bring your bike on board without breaking the bike down into a box, and for much cheaper than an airline! So we loaded up our gear, handed over our bikes, and were off across the country in our luxurious coach seats ;)
We came prepared with food, drink, books and our essential electronics for the 30 hour trip. After seeing some amazing scenery through the heart of America, we arrived in Chicago at Union Station (only a few hours behind schedule). Right away we were blown away by the Windy City's bicycle infrastructure and number of bike commuters. Stay tuned for our Chicago water stories with friends and even the Culligan Man!

1. Two hands on the wheel
2. Stay behind crosswalk until you are the only car in intersection when turning left
3. Don't make a left turn into the lane on the furthest right
4. Always stop behind the first line at the intersection
5. Green arrows are your best friend
6. Leave your wheels straight while waiting to make a left turn
7. Wait for a break in traffic and pedestrians or wait for a yellow light
8. Always check your speeds and stay within a 5 mile buffer below the posted speed limit
9. Look over your shoulder for any lane changes
10. Keep an eye out for no turn on red signs for right turns
11. Make slow and smooth stops
12. Always stay in your lane
13. Good rule of thumb: One lane, go 25
14. School zone and constructions zones are 15mph
15. Scan the roads with your neck, not just your eyes
16. Whoever stops first at a 4 stop has the right of way
17. Make full stops at stop signs. Don't do the California roll.

19. Signal 100 feet prior to your turn
20. You can only enter bicycle lanes where it's dotted, and that's only if you're making a right turn.
21. Be aware of green arrows and green arrows ending.
22. Yield to bicyclists and let them pass if you have to turn into a bike lane.
23. Leave enough space behind a car so you can see their tires.
24. Don't cause gridlock.

Bicycle Accidents in Chicago - Abels & Annes, P.C.
Chicago Bicycle Accident Lawyers at Abels & Annes, P.C.
We are living in a new era of transportation where motor vehicles are no longer the only option. In Chicago, public transit, trains, walking, and cycling are increasing in popularity among those who must move through the city either for work or for pleasure. But as these additional forms of transit gain traction, there are an increased number of collisions and accidents among travelers and many are being injured as a result.
Bicyclists are at an unusually high risk for personal injuries if they have the unfortunate luck of being involved in a collision with a car. While occupants of a vehicle are surrounded by a car's frame and cushioned with things like air bags, there is nothing surrounding a bicyclists to act as a barrier or to absorb part of the impact if a crash does happen. This means that in Illinois, cyclists are injured in more than 90 percent of all of the traffic accidents in which they are involved.
As the number of collisions faced by cyclists increases, the need to understand the laws as they apply to accident victims grows in tandem. Generally, those who are hurt due to the actions of others have a right to compensation for their damages - regardless of whether any traffic tickets were issued by local authorities.
The facts of any accident will determine what avenues towards relief exist, if any, and speaking with a personal injury lawyer in Chicago will help you understand your options if a crash has altered your life.
The legal team at Abels & Annes, P.C. offers a case consultation without cost or obligation to all injury victims who call us toll free at (855) LAW-CHICAGO (529-2442) or locally at (312) 924-7575. We have an attorney standing by 24/7 to take your call and everything discussed during the consultation will be kept confidential so please do not hesitate to contact us now.

Chicago is an American rock band formed in 1967 in Chicago, Illinois. The self-described rock and roll band with horns began as a politically charged, sometimes experimental, rock band and later moved to a predominantly softer sound, generating several hit ballads. They had a steady stream of hits throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Second only to The Beach Boys in Billboard singles and albums chart success among American bands, Chicago is one of the longest-running and most successful rock groups in history.[1]
Police officer SHOT during gunfight with suspect
Footage from a police helicopter shows a shootout between Texas State Troopers and a suspect in San Antonio, Texas, on Sunday, February 18.
The footage released by the Texas Department of Public Safety shows a trooper being shot in the arm by Ernest Manuel Montelongo, who resisted arrest and fled after being stopped for a traffic violation. Montelongo was then fatally shot by another Trooper.
The Texas State Troopers Association said that the suspect “emerged from his vehicle, produced a gun and forced the trooper to exchange gunfire with him.”
Local media reported that authorities said Montelongo was brought to Brooke Army Medical Centre and was pronounced dead a day later. A spokesman for the DPS said the Trooper was “doing well.”
