The Power of a Name: Haida Village at the Museum of Anthropology
The Power of a Name is a film series that explores the contested history of naming practices at UBC's Totem Park Residence and revitalizes stories of UBC-Indigenous relations.
“Totem Park Residence houses over 2,000 first-year UBC students. It was named after an outdoor museum that from 1951 until the late 1970s displayed a selection of carvings representing styles of various First Nations across B.C. In 1962, renowned carvers Bill Reid and Douglas Cranmer created a Haida village at Totem Park which is now behind the Museum of Anthropology. The original six houses were named with the intention of honouring First Nations communities in B.C.; however, they were named without consulting the communities that these names refer to. Many of these terms do not reflect the actual names used by the communities themselves.
The newest houses, həm̓ləsəm̓ and q̓ələχən, carry place names on Point Grey that are significant to the Musqueam people, and are written to represent the unique sounds of their language, hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓. Unlike the original six house names, the new names were selected by a collaborative, community-based naming committee to represent the local history of the Musqueam territory that UBC is located on. The names are in hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓, Musqueam’s ancestral language. hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ is one of B.C.’s 32 First Nations endangered languages, and as an aspect of B.C.’s heritage it must be treated with care and respect.
This film series features stories and sites that connect UBC to the communities represented at Totem Park Residence.
