RV TRIP TIP: Mt. Rushmore, Custer SP & the Black Hills of SD
While Mount Rushmore is the most well-known attraction in the Black Hills of South Dakota, there are lots of great things to see and do here. We just scratched the surface on this easy, one-day scenic drive.
Although Yellowstone National Park is probably the most famous place to see bison (buffalo), Custer State Park has one of the largest publicly-owned herds in the world, roaming freely throughout the park and often stopping traffic along the the road.
Connecting Custer State Park and Mount Rushmore National Memorial, the Iron Mountain Road is a work of art in itself. The highway passes through some of the most beautiful scenery in the Black Hills and includes three tunnels that frame Mount Rushmore in the distance. The road is famous for its Pigtail Bridges that allow travelers to gain or lose elevation quickly.
The Needles Highway is a spectacular drive through pine and spruce forests, meadows surrounded by birch and aspen and rugged granite mountains. Completed in 1922, the road's name comes from the needle-like granite formations you'll see along the way. It also has the longest, and coolest, tunnel!
Of course we visit Mount Rushmore National Memorial too, as no trip to the area would be complete without experiencing this amazing site up close. We hike the easy 6/10-mile Presidential Trail for stunning views almost directly beneath the granite faces.
This is only the beginning of the spectacular scenery in the Black Hills. For the more adventurous, be sure to visit Wind Cave National Park and Harney Peak if you have more time to spend in this beautiful part of the world.
We stayed in one of the many full-hook-up commercial RV parks in the area, but there are lots of State Park and National Forest campgrounds to choose from as well.
If you haven't yet visited the Black Hills, maybe this quick snapshot of the area will inspire you to add it to your must-see list. The admission price to the Custer State Park is well worth it!

Spearfish Canyon. South Dakota Black Hills. Devils Bathtub Trail. Roughlock Falls.
More beautiful places in the Black Hills of South Dakota. It would be easy to spend months here and still not explore all of the gems that this part of the country has to offer.
A drive up or down Spearfish canyon will take you through a lush green forest filled with flowing water and water falls, ferns, and flowers, and towering limestone cliffs. Whether you stay on the road or get out of your car and follow a trail you will not be disappointed.
We take a hike up Devils Bathtub trail which is dog friendly! Be sure to bring your water shoes and if you want to get wet your bathing suit as there is a small natural water slide at the trails end. And when you've reached the end of the road you will find an adorable historical town in either Lead or Spearfish.

Wyoming And South Dakota Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Wyoming & South Dakota in USA.
Cheyenne is Wyoming’s most populated city. When the railroad was constructed in 1860 this “hell-like settlement at end of the railroad” became an important trading centre. For what was to become the federal government, the State Capitol was built and with its golden dome and Corinthian columns it is similar to its larger counterpart in Washington. In the middle of the eighteenth century French scouts were the first to penetrate this region that was then inhabited by the Arapaho and Shoshone Indians. The cowboys and farmers of the Old West needed to spend their hard earned money and Cheyenne profited accordingly and a profusion of hotels, saloons and warehouses suddenly appeared. The Badlands was given its name by the Native Indians due to the inhospitable terrain as they felt threatened by it. Thirty seven million years of wind, rain and snow transformed this highland into a natural work of art that was inaugurated as a national park in 1978. Set within the Black Hills in the state of South Dakota is one of the most famous landmarks in the United States, the Mount Rushmore National Memorial where four monumental portraits of the most famous American presidents have been carved into the granite and symbolize a kind of spectacular tribute to democracy. Twenty five kilometres south west of Mount Rushmore another stone image towers up from the landscape, the Crazy Horse Memorial. Constructed in 1947 it commemorates the famous chief of the Oglala Sioux and its dimensions are even larger than those of Mount Rushmore. As in former times, the routes of the first pioneers still bring visitors into the far west through overwhelming mountain scenery with grandiose views, Wild West towns, buffalo prairies and vast ranches. Make no mistake about it, America’s Wild West is still wild: a place of natural spectacles and nostalgic adventure!

Information:
Custer State Park is a state park and wildlife reserve in the Black Hills of southwestern South Dakota, USA. The park is South Dakota's largest and first state park, named after Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer. The area originally started out as sixteen sections, but was later changed into one block of land because of the challenges of the terrain.[2] The park began to grow rapidly in the 1920s and gained new land. During the 1930s the Civilian Conservation Corps built miles of roads, laid out parks and campgrounds, and built three dams that set up a future of water recreation at the park. In 1964 an additional 22,900 acres (93 km2) were added to the park.[2] The park covers an area of over 71,000 acres (287 km2) of hilly terrain and is home to many wild animals.[3]
The park is home to a famous herd of 1500 free roaming bison.[3] Elk, mule deer, white tailed deer, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, pronghorn, mountain lions, and feral burros also inhabit the park. The park is famous for its scenery, its scenic drives (Needles Highway and the wildlife loop), with views of the bison herd and prairie dog towns. This park is easily accessible by road from Rapid City. Other nearby attractions are Wind Cave National Park, Mount Rushmore, Jewel Cave National Monument, Crazy Horse Memorial, and Badlands National Park.
The popularity of the park grew in 1927, when U.S. President Calvin Coolidge made it his summer White House and announced from the Black Hills that he would not seek a second full term in office in the election of 1928.

Badlands Helicopter Adventure, South Dakota
Badlands Helicopter Adventure, South Dakota: The Badlands of South Dakota are a designated national park and close to 65,000 acres act as a wilderness area for the re-introduction of endangered species. After hopping onto a tour with Black Hills Aerial Adventures, Lisa was on her way to a bird's eye view of 243,000 acres of buttes, pinnacles and spires, not to mention the world's richest Oligocene fossil bed!
If a helicopter ride doesn't appeal, there is plenty of hiking to take advantage of in the Badlands; see more than 7,500 stars in the clear night-sky. Becoming a volunteer in the Night Sky Program is a great way to experience this on a deeper level!
