The Journey Museum and Gardens - Video Learning - WizScience.com
The Journey Museum and Gardens is a museum in Rapid City, South Dakota, USA with 7 acre of gardens. It is set up as a journey through the history of the Black Hills, starting with the Native American creation stories, moving into the 2.5 billion years of history in the rock record with the geology exhibit, paleontology, archaeology, Native American inhabitants, and concluding with the pioneers that traveled west.
The Geology Gallery contains a wall that shows a 2.5 billion year rock record of the Black Hills area. The Museum of Geology at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology provides artifacts and information for patrons to better understand the timeline. Along with the geology section is the paleontology section with fossils, much of which is on loan from the Black Hills Institute of Geological Research in Hill City, South Dakota. A model of an on-site dig with a tent provides patrons with a sense of field work, sometimes with a retired paleontologist working in it who can answer questions. A model of a T-Rex and a Triceratops accompanied by a roaring sound track are also included in the exhibit.
After the Geology and Paleontology exhibits is the Archaeology Gallery. This gallery is split into five sections, according to time period. It is divided into five sections listed in the chart below. The Archaeology Gallery contains artifacts and information from The South Dakota Archaeological Research Center.
The Sioux Indian Museum, the next gallery after Archaeology, contains 5,500 pieces regulated by the United States Department of the Interior's Indian Arts and Crafts Board. Most of the collection is from the collection of a Native American arts collector who owned a trading post on the Rosebud Indian Reservation. This part of the collection was collected from the 1890s to the 1930s. The Sioux Indian Museum contains beaded items, ceremonial items, traditional Native American clothing, an exhibit of items made from animals, kids items , instruments, Native American saddles, and tipis. There is also a holographic Native American elder who tells three stories.

Exploring the Black Hills of South Dakota
A short montage of pictures and videos from my trip to the Black Hills of South Dakota.
My main purpose for going was to visit a couple great friends and see their wedding. It was quite special and Im very thankful to know them!! (Adair & Eric!) You two are so awesome together! =D
I also love native american history so I had to visit a few sights. There's still soo much more to see out there which I didn't get too- such as Devils Tower and Bear Butte State Park. Either way, its a sacred land so its wonderful to visit the Black Hills and acknowledge the history and significance of the area. Thanks for watching!

Touring the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota
I was fortunate enough to tour the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota. The SURF hosted a robotics competition coordinated by Black Hills State University. The competition was the culmination of the season for students from Spearfish Middle School and from Belle Fourche Middle School. I live in Lead and think it is amazing that experiments conducted in this very facility by Raymond Davis Jr., along with two other scientists, resulted in the 2002 Nobel Prize for Physics for pioneering contributions to astrophysics, in particular for the detection of cosmic neutrinos. Physicists from around the world continue conducting ground-breaking experiments that contribute to our understanding of the origins of the universe in what is described as the quietest place on earth.

Federal Mill No. 4 Exploration- Massive Lead Mill from 1918
After returning from filming and performing around five hours of intensive research, we were able to make a 95%-confidence identification of this mill and its nearby shaft. It is the Federal No. 4 mill and No. 12 shaft, both of which produced predominantly lead in the 20th century. We found copious crushed lead and silver ore in spoil piles and leftover material in and around the mill structures.
This massive lead mill was constructed in 1918 and worked for four years, after which ore from the nearby No. 12 shaft was transported to Mill No. 3 (Federal) about two miles away. While the shaft collar appears to have been demolished to make room for Highway 32, Mill No. 4, its associated rail loading facility, and the foundations of the secondary crusher, are remarkably intact. None of the mill structures had been used for approximately 93 years as of the time of filming.
No. 12 Shaft appears to have been active until 1972, when St. Joe Lead closed the last of its operations in the Old Lead Belt and focused on new mines in the Viburnum Trend, approximately one hour west in Crawford, Iron, and Reynolds Counties. The Viburnum Trend is currently mined on a large scale by the Doe Run Company. Development work is ongoing at at least one mine in the Old Lead Belt, indicating that some level of underground lead mining is likely to return to the region in years to come. If you have a connection to the mining industry, you have probably realized by now that all of these things come and go in cycles!
I found it! - 1890s mining town in the mountains
Small South Dakota mining town hidden in the woods. No roads lead to it. No access other than trails and horseback. The small mining town founded in the 1890s. It was almost completely abandoned in 1940 due to the mine closing. The abandoned school house was by far my favorite however, going down into the basement of the 2nd house was way creepier. I love old abandoned towns and South Dakota is filled with some great ones. A truly amazing state.
