Cromford & Black Rocks Walk. June 2019
Cromford Canal, High Peak Junction and The Black Rocks Walk - Derbyshire - England
This walk starts at the beautiful Cromford Canal where you walk alongside the water and follow the path to High Peak Junction. You then join the High Peak Trail to start a steep uphill walk and pass through woodland. When you reach the top there is a fantastic viewpoint where you can see Masson Mills, Willersley Castle, Matlock Bath, Giddy Edge and more. Continue on and you will eventually reach the Black Rocks where you can be rewarded with more great views when standing on the rocks themselves.

Exploring and climbing the famous ''BLACK ROCKS'' (wirksworth-derby shire)
so we finally got to head up to the famous black rocks in wirksworth /cromford probably the best place and location weve been to so far so if you dont already know The area has been a well-known rock climbing venue since the 1890s. A large number of hard lines were put up by some of the best climbers of the 1980s and 1990s. The two best known climbs are featured in the documentary Hard Grit. These are Gaia (climbing grade E8 6b), up the groove in the massive nose that one sees first on the walk to the top, and Meshuga (grade E9 6c), on the main overhanging Promontory. The first ascent of the former was made in 1986 by British climber Johnny Dawes.

Black Rocks is one of the attractions in Derbyshire. The climb up onto the gritstone outcrop of Black Rocks is quite fun and once you get on top, the views of Cromford, Matlock Gorge and the Derwent Valley Mills was superb and rewarding! We went further to Alport Height for even more stunning views. Alport Height is a hill near Wirksworth in Derbyshire. It is the first hill over 1,000 ft (300 m) and is a popular picnic site with its extensive views to the South. It is possible to see Derby city centre from the summit.

The Black Rocks is a small outcrop of natural gritstone, between Cromford and Wirksworth in the Derbyshire Peak District, England.[1] Parking is available for walking along the old railway path (see Cromford and High Peak Railway) and up to the top of the crag, and there is a picnic area.
The area has been a well-known rock climbing venue since the 1890s. A large number of hard lines were put up by some of the best climbers of the 1980s and 1990s. The two best-known climbs are featured in the documentary Hard Grit. The first ascent of the former was made in 1986 by British climber Johnny Dawes.
The Black Rocks also has easier climbing, but this is not for the faint of heart; larger crags offer a far better selection of similar climbs. There are also short but well-worn 'boulder problems' such as the 'Railway Slab'.

a little edit from a our afternoons ride up black rocks derbyshire
Out of My Depth Riding Black Rocks in the Derbyshire Dales
I went to Black Rocks in Derbyshire expecting it to be a fairly tame XC ride. I soon realised the opposite was going to be the case.
The trails at Black Rocks are raw, natural, and unlike anything I have ridden before. I found them incredibly difficult, yet the guys I was with seemed to navigate them with ease, which was a bit embarrassing if I'm honest.
Whenever my confidence begins to grow in this sport, and I think I am beginning to get good, I quickly get brought back down to Earth with a bump.
As usual the best riders by far were the young lads riding with us.
The ride started off with a very challenging, technical climb, and things only got more difficult from there.
Riding places like Black Rocks is the perfect preparation for Enduro races like Ard Rock, and it will definitely be somewhere I need to re-visit.
My bike took a bit of a beating, snapping a cable and chain, which ended things a bit prematurely, but even so, I had a great day riding with a great set of guys.
