Black Sands Beach, Shelter Cove, Northern California
298 Dolphin Dr, Whitethorn, CA 95589
Certainly a long drive to get to if your just visiting but this beautiful stretch of wild beach has it all. The sand is black, the waves are beautiful, and the land is ruggedly beautiful. There is a nice parking lot overlooking the beach and a quick walk down a long stretch of ocean.

The Lost Coast - Black Sands Beach
Split Rock and a few scenes from our day trip on the Black Sands Beach, California's Lost Coast is an area so steep and rugged that road building is problematical, but as a result it is one of the less spoiled parts of California. Shelter Cove road does reach the coast (at Shelter Cove of course) where you can walk the Black Sands Beach, the start (or end) of a 24-mile backpacking trail along the coastline of the lost coast. These are a few scenes of the beach and Split Rock, an easy day trip from the parking lot at the end of Beach Road near Humboldt Creek.

Shelter Cove - Part 1, Black Sands Beach
My friend, Dennis, and I spent a wonderful day at Shelter Cove in Humboldt County, California. I took this video at the overlook around the Black Sands Beach.
From BeachCalifornia.com website:
If you have set your sights on a vacation to the Northern California area and are interested in seeing the truly unique shoreline there, Black Sands Beach in Humboldt County represents a very different experience when compared California's other beaches. Surrounded by the spectacular Northern California backdrop, which includes over two million acres of Redwood Forests, Black Sands Beach is an inviting and intimate way to become acquainted with the area's wonderful landscape to experience all nature has to offer. Located on the north end of the unincorporated town of Shelter Cove on the Lost Coast, Black Sands Beach is definitely off the beaten path. If you are already in the area and want to see the other nearby beach, be sure to visit Shelter Cove Beach.
The most obvious feature Black Sands Beach boasts, and the one that sets it apart from most other beaches in California, is the unique and beautiful black sand which covers some nine miles of the narrow coastal strip. The beach is a designated protected area, part of the King Range National Conservation Area, and is one of only a few such black sand beaches in the world. The water tends to be warm (remember this is Northern California not Socal), and the surf is fantastic for surfing. However, as with the rest of the shoreline of Northern California, surfers lacking experience are warned not to surf during the winter months when the swells are much larger.

Little Black Sand Beach Shelter Cove, CA
Black Sands Beach at Shelter Cove
A remote beach. Apart from traveling up into Northern California, getting there requires driving a 20-mile winding road to the coast off the 101 highway (then that same 20 miles back again).

Three Days on The Lost Coast
At the end of May 2015, my friends and I backpacked the Lost Coast Trail in Humboldt County, CA. This here video is a linear collection of moments from our trek
These 26 miles of coastline are the most remote in the continental United States. On Day One, we started at Mattole Beach and hiked to Cooskie Creek, about 8 miles. On Day Two we hiked from Cooskie Creek to Miller/Big Flat, about 10 miles. We finished on the 3rd day at Black Sands Beach in Shelter Cove, about 8 miles.
Four of were experienced backpackers to varying degrees and three of us had never done anything like this before. The terrain is extremely challenging and varied. But I believe most people in reasonable physical condition can complete this thru-hike, provided they have the mental stamina to over come the difficulty of the terrain.
Shot mostly with a Canon Powershot s100, with some GoPro Hero2 HD and iPhone 5s thrown in.

Relaxing waves breaking at Shelter Cove CA on the Lost Coast
Relaxing waves breaking at Shelter Cove CA on the Lost Coast. Shelter Cove is a fun place to vacation. We stayed in a room overlooking the ocean from our balcony at the Tides Inn. The lost coast trail is there too. We hiked along a little of it.
Shelter Cove is on California's Lost Coast where the King Range meets the Pacific Ocean.
The Lost Coast is an 80 mile stretch of the California coast where Highway 1 goes around the coast because it was too rough to build the road there.
