Birmingham is a major city in England’s West Midlands region, with multiple Industrial Revolution-era landmarks that speak to its 18th-century history as a manufacturing powerhouse. It’s also home to a network of canals, many of which radiate from Sherborne Wharf and are now lined with trendy cafes and bars. In the city centre, the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery is known for pre-Raphaelite masterpieces.
Birmingham is a city and metropolitan borough in the West Midlands, England. Birmingham is the largest and most populous British city outside London. A medium-sized market town in the medieval period, Birmingham grew to international prominence in the 18th century at the heart of the Midlands Enlightenment and subsequent Industrial Revolution, which saw the town at the forefront of worldwide advances in science, technology, and economic development, producing a series of innovations that laid many of the foundations of modern industrial society.
Today Birmingham's economy is dominated by the service sector. The city is a major international commercial centre, ranked as a gamma+ world city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network; and an important transport, retail, events and conference hub. Birmingham's major cultural institutions – including the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Birmingham Royal Ballet, the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, the Library of Birmingham and the Barber Institute of Fine Arts – enjoy international reputations, and the city has vibrant and influential grassroots art, music, literary and culinary scenes. Birmingham is the fourth-most visited city in the UK by foreign visitors.

Aston Hall - Birmingham
Aston Hall is one of Birmingham's most treasured buildings. One of England's finest Jacobean mansions, built by Sir Thomas Holte, a Warwickshire landowner, between 1618-1635,the man after whom the Holte End stand of Villa Park is named. Grade I listed. The house boasts some fine interiors including early 17th century plasterwork, wood carving and chimney pieces. Aston Hall boasts sumptious interiors from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, including the magnificent Long Gallery.
Display rooms illustrate the part Aston Hall and it's residents played in key moments in history, including the English Civil War, and how it prepared to recieve royalty on more than one occasion.
Birmingham - not a town but a village! Clip
'Moving Here' was a collaboration between BMAG and students from Birmingham School of Acting. The project explores the theme of migration to Birmingham during medieval times and beyond, specifically focussing on why people moved here. The students developed their ideas into four short films with the help of a writer/director and film maker. They humorously look at how the city grew from a small insignificant village into a bustling market town because of success of migration.
The films will feature in the medieval section of the new Birmingham History Galleries, due to open later this year. The film above shows a snippet from 'Newsflash 1643'.
Birmingham was legally only a village in the 17th century because its medieval lords never bought a royal charter which would make it a town. Many people moved here because they were free to enter any trade without joining a town guild.

Historic Birmingham Town Hall painting ‘comes home’
Original artist’s impression of iconic Birmingham landmark to go on public display for first time
A painting of Town Hall Birmingham of national historical significance is to go on public display for the first time. The watercolour dates to 1831 and is the artist’s impression which accompanied the winning competition entry by architects Joseph Hansom (later the inventor of the Hansom Cab) and Edward Welch. It has been loaned to Town Hall Birmingham for permanent display by Assay Office Birmingham.
Town Hall Birmingham was built in 1834 and is believed to be the oldest surviving concert hall of its size in the world. It was intended as both a fitting venue for the renowned Triennial Musical Festivals as well as to serve ‘the general purposes of a Town Hall’.
