This video is about Dorset Flight 23rd Jul 2015. Weather had been wet and windy most of the week but finally dropped to flyable conditions on the Thursday night. Couldn't hang around much as it was starting to get dark. Managed a lovely loop from Baiter Park, over the harbour to Wareham, Blue Pool, Corfe Castle, Swanage, Old Harry Rocks, Studland Bay, the Chain ferry and back again. Going to try again in September and hopefully the conditions might be a little brighter so I can stay up for longer.

No music this time - just the flight from start to finish.

Hambledon Hill is a spectacular Iron Age hill fort located in the Blackmore Vale in Dorset, England. It's about five miles north west of the ancient market town of Blandford Forum.

Set your satnav for the village of Child Okeford, a village on the hill's western side. There is a shop and a pub (The Baker's Arms) there if you need to refresh yourself after your walk.

When I visited it I approached from the lay-by to the north. There is a footpath covered in tree roots leading up to the foot of the ramparts, then a steep climb if you take the direct route to the summit. Otherwise you can skirt along the sides to find gentler slopes.

Archaeological evidence suggests that the site was occupied in Neolithic times. You can imagine it as a place of security and refuge above the wild and riskier places in the valleys below which would have been covered in ancient woodland at the time. With the arrival of the Bronze Age a lot of the woods would have been cleared for farming.

Archaeologist have discovered many finds at the site. They have uncovered the red deer antler picks which would have been used to create the ramparts and other earthworks. They have also dug up human skulls and even a skeleton of a young man with an arrow head embedded in him. Presumably this unfortunate person probably died while attacking or defending the site.

Such hill forts were places of prestige and power in the local area. The presence of two long barrows suggests a place of veneration and remembrance of the ancestors. Who knows what rituals and ceremonies took place on its summit, silhouetted against the night sky.

The fort was a centre of power for Durotriges tribe who ruled over this area in ancient Britain. They built a string of forts that included Hod Hill, Hengistbury Head, and the magnificent Maiden Castle which is just south of Dorchester.

The site was also a meeting point for rebels during the English Civil War.

This hill fort is well worth a visit for the views alone so pick a day with reasonably good visibility. It doesn't need to be the height of summer, just any day when the air is clear. In fact, winter is often better when there is less dust, particularly later in the farming season when the crops are harvested from the fields in the valleys below. You can see for miles from the summit.

You can also walk up from a small car park on the south west side. Look out of the narrow entrance to the lane in Duck Street. It's just next to a pair of cottages.

Three entrances to the hill fort have been identified. The third is on the south east side. Despite its obvious advantages the hill fort was abandoned in favour of another in the vicinity in about 300 BC.

Hambledon Hill is also a nature reserve managed by the National Trust, so if you're a bird watcher or keen on any aspect of the local flora and fauna then this site should be on your itinerary.

Due to its location and the views it's popular with joggers who want to test their stamina on the slopes.

Battle of Passchendaele

The Battle of Passchendaele (or Third Battle of Ypres or Passchendaele) was a campaign of the First World War, fought by the British and their allies against the German Empire. The battle took place on the Western Front, between July and November 1917, for control of the ridges south and east of the Belgian city of Ypres in West Flanders, as part of a strategy decided by the Allies at conferences in November 1916 and May 1917. Passchendaele lay on the last ridge east of Ypres, five miles from a railway junction at Roeselare, which was a vital part of the supply system of the German Fourth Army. The next stage of the Allied strategy was an advance to Torhout–Couckelaere, to close the German-controlled railway running through Roeselare and Torhout, which did not take place until 1918. Further operations and a British supporting attack along the Belgian coast from Nieuwpoort, combined with an amphibious landing, were to have reached Bruges and then the Dutch frontier. The resistance of the German Fourth Army, unusually wet weather, the onset of winter and the diversion of British and French resources to Italy, following the Austro-German victory at the Battle of Caporetto (24 October – 19 November) allowed the Germans to avoid a general withdrawal, which had seemed inevitable to them in October. The campaign ended in November when the Canadian Corps captured Passchendaele. In 1918 the Battle of the Lys and the Fifth Battle of Ypres, were fought before the Allies occupied the Belgian coast and reached the Dutch frontier.
A campaign in Flanders was controversial in 1917 and has remained so. British Prime Minister Lloyd George opposed the offensive as did General Foch the French Chief of the General Staff. The British commander Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig did not receive approval for the Flanders operation from the War Cabinet until 25 July. Matters of dispute by the participants and writers and historians since the war have included the wisdom of pursuing an offensive strategy in the wake of the failed Nivelle Offensive, rather than waiting for the arrival of the American armies in France; the choice of Flanders over areas further south or the Italian front; the climate and weather in Flanders; Haig's selection of General Hubert Gough and the Fifth Army to conduct the offensive; debates over the nature of the opening attack between advocates of shallow and deeper objectives; the passage of time between the Battle of Messines and the opening attack of the Battles of Ypres; the extent to which the internal troubles of the French armies motivated British persistence in the offensive; the effect of mud on operations; the decision to continue the offensive in October once the weather had broken and the human cost of the campaign on the soldiers of the German and British armies.
