The Blowing Stone at Kingston Lisle. Megalithic natural trumpet.
This natural trumpet or horn is formed of totally natural passageways through a natural boulder of sarsen stone. It stands by the roadside beneath the Ridgeway a little to the east of the famous Uffington White Horse.
I was not prepared to make a Youtube of the stone, so the sound is not good and my playing is not top quality. But I hope it gives you an idea of what it is capable of.
According to tradition it was blown by King Alfred to summon his troops to fight against the Danes, though it is also possible that its natural passageway, and the possibility of sounding it as a trumpet, was first discovered in the 18th century.
I like the idea that it has always been known, that it originally stood on White Horse Hill, and that it may have been sounded in prehistoric times. But there's no sensible way of knowing...

Blowing Stone
While camping and hiking around Uffington Castle and White Horse, we hiked down The Ridgeway to visit Blowing Stone. I was unable to get a good sound out of it, more like the sound of elephant flatulence. :)

Driving liberty walks monster mustang
We’re a long way from Nagoya. And I’m not measuring in miles. To my left a village pond and geese, over to my right thatched roofs and so on. Oxfordshire. Britain’s archetypal rural idyll. Nearby are pubs called the Blowing Stone, the Royal Oak, King Alfred’s Head, the Swan, the Lamb. They’ve probably all been there for hundreds of years.
On top of the nearby hill runs the Ridgeway path – it’s been in use for over 5,000 years and is lined by burial mounds and the Bronze Age white horse carved into the chalk at Uffington. King Alfred himself was born in Wantage in 849AD. Ancient history defines much of the landscape – including the routes of the roads we’re driving on. The A338 can trace its roots back at least as far as the Romans.
Why does the Liberty Walk Mustang bring out this desire to poke back through history? Because it seems so alien. It is not a product of this environment. I feel like I’m introducing it to a place it cannot possibly comprehend.
TG recently visited Liberty Walk’s headquarters in Japan. As far as modified cars go they might be outrageous, at the extremities of what’s road legal – even physically possible, but you look around at the influences from design, architecture, and you can imagine what triggered LW founder Wataru Kato’s imagination.
Stop. I’m getting carried away. Attaching cultural significance to a car that, at the end of the day, just rides lower than normal and wears broader bodywork. But you should see the impact it has, how people react to it. Cor. Some stare at the ground and hurry past, others stare and stare and never say a word, some look positively offended, shoulders twitching they bristle with indignation, almost desperate to take offence. Still others? Well, they Just. Love. It.
But everybody reacts.
What can I tell you about it? Well, shorn of silliness, underneath it’s a 2016 Ford Mustang 5.0-litre V8. Still with 425bhp. Maybe a bit more on account of the new Pipercross carbon airbox and Remus exhaust, which have liberated an appropriate amount of noise from the usually quite subdued V8.

Archeologist Discover Ancient Remains in Great Britain
Excavations at a water pipe site have found 26 ancient skeletons, some from the Iron Age with unusual burial practices suggesting a ritual purpose. In the vicinity of Wantage in Oxfordshire, the new water pipes are being installed to protect Letcombe Brook a rare chalk stream that has been under environmental pressure due to agriculture.
The site was archeologically surveyed prior to the pipe installation because Uffington White Horse, an iconic Iron Age chalk hill figure is just five miles away. Cotswold contractors excavated several sites in the area where the 3.7-mile pipe was to be laid. They uncovered 26 individual burials dating back to the Iron Age and Roman times. They also found animal remains, household items, pottery, cutting tools, and a comb.
Unusual for the period, between two and three thousand years ago, the Iron Age skeletons were buried in pits. There are very few surviving graves from this time because many of the Iron Age communities in the area are believed to have practiced a form of sky burial in which bodies are placed in the open air to decompose. Some of the pit burials featured peculiar body placement, a head between the feet, for example, and feet relocated to the upper body. Iron Age pit burials appear to have had a ritual purpose, and previous discoveries show evidence of bones having been exhumed at later dates.
Paolo Guarino, Cotswold Archaeology project officer said that: “The Iron Age site at Childrey Warren was particularly fascinating as it provided a glimpse into the beliefs and superstitions of people living in Oxfordshire before the Roman conquest. Evidence elsewhere suggests that burials in pits might have involved human sacrifice.
“These findings open a unique window into the lives and deaths of communities we often know only for their monumental buildings, such as hillforts or the Uffington White Horse.”
“The results from the analysis of the artefacts, animal bones, human skeletons and the soil samples will help us add some important information to the history of the communities that occupied these lands so many years ago.”
Cotswold Archeology has removed the human remains and archeological material from the site. They will be examined under laboratory conditions, while Thames Water will lay the new pipes that will supply groundwater from the Thames to neighboring villages preserving the unique ecosystem of Letcombe Brook.

Summer Solstice Sunrise - White Horse Hill
Summer Solstice Sunrise - White Horse Hill (2018)
This video is commemorates the Summer Solstice Sunrise at White Horse Hill. White Horse Hill has a carving of a horse, the chalk geography give the Horse its white appearance. Some say the horse is not a horse but a cat!
White Horse Hill is near Uffington, Oxfordshire, England.
Wearing my clogs I journey around White Horse Hill. Much of the land is owned by the National Trust and the public can wonder around to their hearts content. There is parking available nearby.
The Summer Solstice Sunrise ritual was performed by a pagan group on Dragon Hill. Dragon Hill is a mound which is adjacent to White Horse Hill.
