SE2 EP49. Sailing the Caribbean, St. Martin to St. Kitts
St Martin is an amazing island worthy of lots of time, but Hurricane season is a concern and we want to be outside of the Hurricane Box (South of 12 degrees N) as soon as possible.
In this episode we haul anchor and set sail S.E. for Statia and then onto St Kitts. After leaving Statia the winds and waves, contrary to the forecast, change, making what should have been a short beam reach passage, much longer and harder fought... check it out.

we love the Caribbean
After returning from my Cuba adventure my wife Nicole visited us (me and Cookelu meu) at the BVI's. We had a wonderful time.
A1X Terriers on the West Somerset 32678 ‘Knowle’ Oct 2004 & 662 ‘Martello’ Oct 2007
I have managed to record two visits by these amazing little locos to the West Somerset Railway. The first was at the Autumn Gala of 2004 and here LBSC 'A1X' 0-6-0T 32678 ‘Knowle’ is back in Minehead where it had previously had a long holiday at Butlins (12 Years from 1963). The weather is on the rather wet side which happily keeps the crowds away. First, we catch the beauty backing her stock into the station ready for a short working to Blue Anchor. Then after a stirring blast of the whistle she is off and I follow by road. Needless to say, I was beaten to Blue Anchor, but we are in time to see her, after running round, making a spirited departure for Minehead all on 2nd October 2004. Interesting to see Virgin Branded HST with 43155 ‘City of Aberdeen’ in Minehead which was earning the WSR money for storing it.
Next comes the Terrier that holidayed at Butlins Ayr, No 662 ‘Martello’. Starting, chuffing happily up to Blue Anchor station with the 11:45 from Minehead, then a few of the running round at Blue Anchor. Again going ahead of the train I arrived in the field by the Seaward Way level crossing in Minehead before the Rooter’s arrival which was duly recorded. These all at the Autumn Gala of 2007 on Friday 5th October. The sound of ‘Martello’ chuffing (coughing even) is so familiar to me and strangely different to ‘Knowle’.
From 1929 to 1936 ‘Knowle’ was in the Isle of Wight as W4 later W14 ‘Bembridge’ on return to the mainland scrapping was on the cards, but she was reprieved. ‘Martello’, 5 years older, had remained in mainland capital and duplicated stock right through until her sale to Billy Butlin in 1963. The name of 662 was a departure for the class which generally were LBSC locations whilst she was presumably named after the defensive towers defending these locations. The name Martello towers itself came from the Geonese Torra di Mortella on Corsica which had been blown up by the Brits in 1803.

Fishing Vessel hits large Sailing Vessel in Good Visibility 20/8/2010
Here is the press release from this incident.
At a hearing 30/05/2011 at Southampton Magistrates the Officer of the Watch of a fishing vessel pleaded guilty to one safety charge brought under Section 58 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995. He was fined £1,700 plus costs of £6,435.
On the 20th August 2010 the Andrea had finished fishing and was returning to port in the Netherlands. The skipper and rest of the crew were below leaving Jan Baarssen alone on the bridge in sole charge of the vessel. The Andrea is a 36.5 metre beam trawler registered in the UK but is based in the Netherlands
The Alexander von Humboldt was returning to Germany after a training voyage with a crew of fifty nine (59) consisting of thirty three (33) trainees and twenty six (26) full time crew. She is a large three masted sail training vessel registered in Germany.
The visibility on the day was good (10 Km +), wind was southerly force 5-6 with weather being grey and overcast.
During the afternoon of the 20th August 2011 the Alexander von Humboldt detected the Andrea on a steady bearing on its port side. The Andrea was not fishing and was the give way vessel. The Alexander von Humboldt started sounding its whistle. The Andrea failed to give way. The Alexander von Humboldt also tried to contact the Andrea by VHF radio but had no response. The Andrea claims to have gone hard to starboard and when within 15-20 metres of the Alex von Humboldt, the Andrea was seen to go full astern. The Andrea struck the port quarter of the Alexander von Humboldt. It was a fairly low speed collision.
Apart from some scratched paintwork, the Andrea was undamaged.
The Alexander von Humboldt was lucky to suffer only some dented shell plating with associated damage to internal wooden bulkheads and deck planking together with bent or buckled handrails. It was very fortunate that no harm came to the crew of the Alexander von Humboldt and that its rigging and watertight integrity remained intact.
Mr Jan Baarssen, 51, of Urk, Netherlands pleaded guilty for conduct endangering ships or persons. He was finerd£1,700 plus costs of £6,435
In passing sentence the Magistrates stated that it was fortunate that they were no injuries especially among the sail training crew.
Mr David Fuller O.B.E., Principal Fishing Vessel Surveyor for the Eastern Region of the MCA stated:This is yet another incident occurring on the return of a fishing vessel to harbour. Fishermen are reminded of the requirement to keep a good lookout at all times. Also that that the trip is not over until the vessel is safely tied up in port.
We would like to thank the German and Netherlands Police for their assistance in this matter

Oh, and did I mentioned manta rays?
Anyways, in this video, we are not doing anything a tourist wouldn’t do, but we are doing what most tourists will dream to do! Join us to discover the wonders of the underwater Solomon, and learn more about WWII and Enoghae inlet!

The Reality of Living Minimally on a Sailboat in the Caribbean — Sailing Uma [Step 84]
Some might think that living on a sailboat in the caribbean is always fancy and glamorous. The reality is that although great, living minimally on a sailboat is far from luxurious. Although adventurous, this life is hard work. But we love every aspect of it, and every step forward is worth it.
In this week's episode, we share the true colors of the liveaboard life. We spend a few days in Deshaies Guadeloupe, getting some boat projects done and some general organisation before sailing south in search of water, propane, and laundry facilities.
If you enjoyed this episode, please give it thumbs up, it helps us out a bunch :)

Our Journey through the Famous Corinth Canal! (Sailing La Vagabonde) Ep. 118
Woohoo! We made it through the famous Corinth Canal - Greece. The canal is 8m deep and excavated at sea level so it doesn’t need any locks. It took them 12 years to make it and it was first opened in 1893. The canal shaves off a 700km journey around the Peloponnese peninsula and around 11,000 ships pass through each year, mostly small vessels that can handle the narrowness and are able to dodge the result of landslides the sit under the surface. Join us on La Vagabonde as we cruise right on through with my pal Kayla and of course Daniel usually hiding somewhere behind the scenes. Videos made with love, SLV xo

Ep. 56, Saltwater Bath/Naturist Sailing ⛵
Part 8 of a series: Sailing Tampa Bay to Key West. Ashley takes a morning saltwater bath. Underwater footage captures the refreshing atmosphere.
