Australia - Jenolan Caves Part 1
Awesome natural cave formations. What I consider a must see area in Australia.
For Part 2 see this link:
Very peaceful and tranquil. Stay still long enough and the small wild life will surprise you when you least expect it. We had just missed the little Platypus when we got there... all we saw were little air bubbles as it swam away. :)
My favourite site was the River Walk, very relaxing and quiet. Lots of various cave tours and natural formations to see. You can also go spelunking on some of the tighter cave tours or take a leisurely stroll around the area, exploring on your own.
enjoy.
Rob
PS. Thanks to our terrific Aussie friends, Dave Simmons for letting us know about the area and taking us up there ! and Sandi & Tony Whalan for filling us in on the history of the area.
(Tony is related to one of the original explorers who found the Jenolan area. The lan in the last part of the name Whalan is used in the naming of the area: Jeno-lan.)
(Note: This video is not to be used for any Commercial purposes unless permission is given by me.)
Part 1 of 2
Part 2 will take a look at inside some of the Caves and rock formations.
We stayed at the Mountain Lodge for a couple nights - but in hindsight we should have spent at least another day there. There is a lot to see and do. Here is the link to the accommodations:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brief History of the area see the following link:
For thousands of years, the Jenolan area has been part of the culture of local indigenous peoples. The area holds significance to the Gundungurra people, who knew it as 'Binomil' or 'Bin-oo-mur'. In approximately 1835-40 the area was recorded for the first time by either James, Charles or Alf Whalan, three brothers who each claimed to have discovered the caves while searching for a bushranger, James McKeown, whom they claimed used the caves as a hide-out.
The caves, then known as the Fish River Caves, came under New South Wales Government control in 1866, becoming only the second area in the world reserved for the purpose of conservation and the following year Jeremiah Wilson was appointed as the first Keeper of the Caves. Wilson not only explored the already known Elder and Lucas Caves but later discovered the Imperial, Left Imperial (now known as Chifley), Jersey and Jubilee Caves.
The caves were open to tourism early, but there was little protection from visitors damaging formations until souveniring was banned in 1872. In 1884 the name Jenolan Caves was adopted. The name Jenolan comes from the Gundungurra word, Genowlan, for a high place shaped like a foot.

Australian East Coast Trip:
Started in Sydney were we enjoyed the city life, beautiful food and the incredible Sydney opera house.
The morning after we headed to the Blue Moutains, having a stop off in Glenbrook to fuel up gor the 1.5 hour hike through the incredible rainforest to the stunning Wentworth Falls & viewpoints of the beautiful Jamison Valley.
Interesting fact about the Blue Moutains; It is the same size as Switzerland & twice the size of the Grand Canyon. After the hike we than went to the Three sisters lookout to capture some shots.
The following day we left Sydney making our way to the Award Winning Hunter Valley. From there heading up the coast enjoying the beautiful scenery of Gondwana Rainforest.
The day after we went to the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital, then heading to Emerald beach, sleeping at camp X which is one of the best locations in Australia to learn how to surf. Surrounded by travelers from all over the globe, happy, relaxed and keen to surf.
Fantastic location & such an incredible atmosphere to experience.
After spending the afternoon surfing, we then left Camp X heading up the relaxing rural River Retreat. Spending the afternoon paddling down the Nymbodia River.
Final stop of the trip is Byron Bay, possibly the most chilled out town in Australia. On the way up to Byron, we made a stop in the picturesque seaside town of Yamba to visit the Abgourie Blue Pool. Such a unique & beautiful place to visit, definitely worth a visit.
Arriving in Byron, enjoying the chill atmosphere, friendly people & beautiful food.
Had such an incredible time exploring the beautifully unique outback Australia has to offer.

ABOUT THE CAVE
This long and exciting cave tour rewards you with a sense of personal achievement. Its many astonishing features make the effort worth while. It offers something to amaze everyone.
It features the underground ‘River Styx’ which appears as pools of blue water, including the ‘Pool of Reflections’. This is a deep, illuminated underground lake, whose almost motionless surface produces spectacular reflections.
You will see the huge 'Queen Esther's Chamber', magnificent shawls, such as the ‘Giant Shawl’, and many famous formations, including the ‘Minaret’ (a spectacular stalagmite), ‘Grand Column’ (biggest column at Jenolan) and the ‘Queen's Canopy’.
In 2010, the River Cave tour was revitalised using the latest lighting technology, enabling you to see the cave formations as they have never been seen before. The environmentally friendly lighting system uses less electricity and minimises heat output, conserving the sensitive cave environment.
This tour includes 2 high, steep steel ladders. Please wear appropriate shoes and clothing.
