Memphis is the second largest city in the state of Tennessee and the second largest metropolitan area in the state after Nashville. The state rests in the southeastern portion of the United States. Memphis, with a population totaling more than 653,350 as of 2013, is also the county seat for Shelby County. The city's claims to fame include Graceland, the mansion Elvis Presley lived in during his later years. Maybe more importantly, Memphis is considered by many to be the home of blues music.
Memphis is an older city that has been through a lot. With that said, the city has developed a rugged yet, colorful sense of character that locals identify with. A lovely mix of old and new, Memphians have worked hard to build a vibrant community while keeping the city's old-time charm. Memphis has much more to offer than just Graceland with its lively neighborhoods and constant renewal.
Although downtown Memphis has experienced quite a rebirth and renewal in the last few years, the center of the city is older and while new development is hard to find, revitalization of old areas is beginning to take shape. Areas such as Beale Street and Mud Island have become relatively safe and citizens once again have a vested interest in making downtown safe, exciting, and a great place to visit and relax after decades of abandonment.
Whether visiting or moving to the area, from May to October make it well worth your while to visit the Memphis Farmers Market which formed and began in 2006 - it is one of the brightest shining stars of the early Spring, Summer, and through Mid-Autumn. A word of caution: Memphis is extremely hot in the summertime, and the humidity can make you feel even hotter! Those who have trouble tolerating high heat and humidity may wish to avoid visiting during July or August.
Memphis has a certain baroque, ruined quality that's both sad and beguiling. Though poverty is rampant – Victorian mansions sit beside tumbledown shotgun shacks (a narrow style of house popular in the South) and college campuses lie in the shadow of eerie abandoned factories – whiffs of a renaissance are in the air. Neighborhoods once downtrodden, abandoned and/or otherwise reclaimed by kudzu – South Main, Binghampton, Crosstown and others – are being reinvented with kitschy boutiques, hipster lofts and daring restaurants, all dripping with Memphis' wild river-town spirit.

Tennessee | 24 Hours in Nashville (Music City)
Nashville is the state capitol of Tennessee with a population of just over 650,000 people which is relatively small in comparison with other cities in the US. The city itself stradles the Cumberland River, which goes on to join the Mississippi River in Memphis. Nashville is famous throughout the world has being a place where musicians and music fans gravitate hence the nickname Music City, other than music Nashville is also a large rail hub as it is the confluence of different national railroads within the US.
The video is a composite of 3 days worth of footage taken while I was in Nashville a.k.a Music City while attending a conference- given the fact that for two of the days I was in the conference center, I felt this was best way of portraying life around Nashville and certainly Broadway over a 24 hour period.
All the bars which feature live music acts are predominantly set around Broadway between 5th Avenue North and 1st Avenue North a distance of about 0.25 miles. Just off Broadway within the avenues listed above are the other attractions- Ryman Auditorium, Country Music Hall of Fame to name a few. Unfortunately I didn't have time to visit those.
At night Broadway is very lively with different genres of music and lots of drinks flowing; I found that some venues imposed a cover charge which I avoided as there are many others which are free to get it- the cover charge thing annoys me when the venue itself is charging exorbitant money for the food and drink on offer. You can have a good time on Broadway, but like the rest of Nashville its not exactly a cheap night out and I would say above average in terms of cost. But if you are a fan of rock / country music then I would definetly put a visit to Broadway in Nashville on your bucket list as it is something that just has to be experienced.
In the morning broadway is quite and the streets are normally wet after being rinsed down from the night before - no need to explain why! Other than bars with live music, Broadway has a few record shops and clothing shops which sell the typical southern attire of jeans, fancy shirt, big belt, boots and the obligatory stetson; not sure if that is a stereotype or not, so no offense intended- especially as I only saw a handful of people dressed like during my entire time in Nashville / Tennessee.
While staying in Nashville, you will on occasion hear train horns in the distance- I first heard one in the morning from my 22nd Floor hotel room, which took me by surprise! Nashville is a hub for the CSX railroad company and can be a magnet for trainspotters a.k.a 'Rail Fans' in the US. Having heard about how big American freight trains can be in comparison with those in the UK, I decided to go looking for one at the railroad crossing on 2nd Avenue North and also Demonbreun Street. After a short wait, sure enough a huge train which took approximately 10 minutes to pass- so given an estimated speed of 15 mph that would make the train approximately 2.5 miles long. Nashville is a rail hub at is the cross road between rails travelling North-to-South and East-to-West. Hence throughout the day, you will hear train horns in the distance, which from what I seen is a bit of an annoyance for certain areas within East Nashville.
During my time in Nashville it was Marine Week, whereby a significant amount of US Marines decend on the city to perform live demonstrations, static displays of military hardware, musical performances and demonstrations of time honours Marine Corps traditions. It was very impressive- especially as one afternoon a MV-22 Osprey hovered over the city and landed in one the open areas.
I enjoyed my time in Nashville as it has always somewhere I wanted to visit due to my tastes in music! It surprised me how small and compact the city was- especially the music areas since alot of it is centred around the lower end of Broadway. The actual recording studios etc are located out of town nowadays or in the big high-rises. If I return in the future, I'll definetly want to see a performance in the Ryman Auditorium and explore some of the other venues that were on offer.

FRED JONES JR MAKES MEMPHIS BETTER IT'S TRACY TIME! SHC=Academic, cultural, & economic empowerment!
#livelikeitsagift #troweandco #amazeeveryday
When Fred Jones Jr. originally conceived the idea of two well-matched southern football teams squaring off in an annual grudge match, he knew it would be entertaining and would draw crowds of tens of thousands from across the region. But the success of the Southern Heritage Classic® Cultural Celebration has exceeded his original vision beyond his dreams.
Emboldened by the cause to help support worthy educational institutions and encouraged by growing attendance, Fred Jones Jr. added many activities to the football game since its launch in 1990. The Southern Heritage Classic® Cultural Celebration attracts fans from across the country, many of whom schedule family vacations and reunions around the annual rivalry football game featuring Tennessee State University and Jackson State University. It makes sense, because the Southern Heritage Classic® Cultural Celebration has developed into a weekend jam-packed with a parade, a fashion show, concerts, a golf tournament, tailgate parties, a coach’s luncheon, a battle of the bands, and more. There is something to meet the varied interests of fans of all ages.
Fred Jones Jr. never doubted that the Memphis community would support the event. Growing up in the Clayborne Homes housing community in the Memphis area, Jones worked during the day and went to school at night to earn his BBA degree from Memphis State University in 1971. He recognized that the support of his family and friends was vital to that achievement, and he wanted others to have that same support and opportunity. Having discovered a knack for putting together entertainers with large audiences in the most attractive venues, he blended that talent with his love for education and for helping the community to which he himself was grateful. From that combination, and a wealth of experience, the Southern Heritage Classic® Cultural Celebration was born.
Fred Jones Jr.’s experience includes associations with a roster of well-known, first-class talent including Isaac Hayes, The Isley Brothers, Prince, Bill Cosby, The Commodores, Stevie Wonder, Parliament-Funkadelic, Luther Vandross, LL Cool J, Count Basie, Tyler Perry, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, The O’Jays, Usher, and hundreds more. He also assembled national blues and jazz tours for several international companies. He was an original owner/limited partner of the Memphis NBA team, the Memphis Grizzlies. But Fred Jones Jr. considers his most fulfilling business endeavor to be the Southern Heritage Classic. “I’ve had a lot of fun throughout my career and I’ve had the pleasure to work with hundreds of fascinating, talented people. But there is no thrill for me bigger than getting to hand Jackson State University and Tennessee State University the checks they earn every year after the event and knowing that money will be used by schools that really need and deserve the support.”
Now that FOX SportSouth airs the Southern Heritage Classic football game, the event has grown beyond the attention of the Memphis region. For Fred Jones Jr., it doesn’t matter how big it grows to be, it will always have the nostalgic flavor of a hometown tradition: “The Southern Heritage Classic® Cultural Celebration has become the premier sports and entertainment event in Memphis. While it has taken on the size of a huge city event, it has retained the small-town warmth and feel that is so characteristic of events in the Memphis area. The Classic really belongs to the community.”
Major corporations in the area enthusiastically support the Southern Heritage Classic. FedEx is the presenting sponsor. Other major sponsors include AutoZone, Nike, MillerCoors, Carrier Corporation and Tennessee Highway Safety Office. The list of sponsors continue to grow every year.
