BOA VIAGEM BEACH - SUMMERTIME 2011 - RECIFE - BRAZIL
Salvador, Bahía 2019: what to do in Salvador, Brazil's most vibrant city
A week spent in the incredible city of Salvador de Bahia, in the state of Bahia, Brazil. Salvador de Bahia is one of Brazil's most vibrant and colourful cities, oozing with culture and music at every turn. We stayed across the three most popular parts of the city, Rio Vermelho and Barra - two of the more fancy neighbourhoods in Salvador de Bahia - and Pelourinho, the city's stunning old town, packed with bright colours and colonial architecture. The Pelourinho neighbourhood in Salvador is a UNESCO World Heritage site, due to it's stunning beauty.
In Pelourinho we visited the famous sites: Igreja de Sao Francisco, Elevador Lacerda, Igreja da Ordem Terceira de Nossa Senhora do Rosario dos Pretos, Largo da Cruz Quebrada/Cruz Caida (the Fallen Cross) and many others. Join us to watch the sun go down over the famous bay from the Lacerda lift and at the famous Farol da Barra - Barra Lighthouse, for a beautiful sunset.

PRAIA DE BOA VIAGEM, Pernambuco (Aéreas Drone)
Salvador Travel Guide - A Brazilian Charm
Salvador Travel Guide - A Brazilian Charm
Salvador is the capital of the state of Bahia, Brazil. With a charming Old Town (a World Heritage Site), a vibrant musical scene and popular Carnival celebrations, it is considered one of the birthplaces of Brazilian culture. Founded in 1549, Salvador was the capital in the heyday of the slave trade. The legacy remains today in its large Afro-Brazilian population, and the resulting culture in many ways outshines the rest of Brazil; in music, many of the greatest names from the mid-20th century to the present hail from Salvador, such as Dorival Caymmi, Gilberto Gil, and Caetano Veloso. In literature, the late Jorge Amado was also from the region. It's a vibrant, exciting city, and its people are quite friendly.
Salvador is on a peninsula on the northeast coast of Brazil which shields the large Baía de Todos os Santos (All Saints Bay) from the Atlantic Ocean. The city is the third largest in Brazil, sprawling for dozens of kilometers inland from the coast. Most visitors head for the coastal neighborhoods that cluster around where the bay meets the ocean.Salvador, Brazil has a tropical climate including rainforests and lush vegetation.
A 100m cliff runs along the entire bayshore, dividing the city into Cidade Alta, up on the cliff, and the Cidade Baixa down by the bay. The former features Pelourinho, the old city center that packs historical sites, colonial architecture, museums, restaurants, bars, hostels, artisanal shops, and music/dance/capoeira academies into a convenient, albeit tourist-swarmed, set of winding cobblestone streets. The latter features a commercial center with lots of bus traffic coming in from all over Salvador.
Outside of this area, there are many beach districts that stretch from the tip of the peninsula northeast along the Atlantic coast. The Barra neighborhood at the tip of the peninsula is the main alternative jumping-off point to Pelourinho, and a little further to the northeast are the hip neighborhoods of Rio Vermelho and Amaralina, which feature a nightlife less geared to the foreign tourism industry. A decent bus ride beyond these is the neighborhood of Itapuã, which has an energetic beach side nightlife and relatively few foreign visitors. Northward from there are kilometers and kilometers of gorgeous beaches, all accessible by bus.
One of the main attractions in Salvador is the carnaval. Salvador's giant Carnival, the biggest of the world, according to the Guiness book of records, lasts for one week and is extremely popular with Brazilians and tourists alike. Visiting a Salvador beach is a highlight for many tourists. One of the main central Salvador beaches is Porto de Barra. It was originally the site of the first settlement of european newcomers to Bahia. It can get very crowded on weekends. The northeast region of Salvador concentrates most beaches with good water quality. Flamengo and Stella Maris are the most popular beaches among tourists and upper class locals. They have excellent tourist infrastructure and rough waters excellent for surfing. Jaguaribe, Piatã and Itapoã, with calmer waters, are mostly frequented by locals and can become quite crowded at weekends.

Pelourinho in Salvador da Bahia
Michael Jackson - They Don't Care About Us
Recife Living & Porto de Galinhas - Travel Deeper Brazil (Ep. 14)
Recife, Brazil -
It's a quiet morning on the beach in the Boa Viagem neighborhood of Recife.
And while you're likely to run into a few fisherman and beachgoers, you won't find many people actually in the water here,
As it's said, this is the most dangerous beach in the world do to the heavy shark population just offshore.
And as much as I'd love to jump in and prove it, I decided to skip the swim and head downtown to see what life's like on land in the Capital city of Pernambuco.
The historical center is lined with colorful buildings and cheerful people.
Frevo music is in the air and signs of carnaval are everywhere.
Recife and neighboring Olinda, host one of the best carnival celebrations in the country and no matter when you go, you'll witness the setup or remains of the year's big event.
One of the main attractions during Carnaval here are the Bonecos Gigantes or Giant Puppets, and I just so happened to followed a guy into the Giant Puppet embassy to see the incredible collection of wood and paper mache figurines on display.
The puppets are usually famous celebrities, athletes and public figures and are carried like floats during the local parades.
They're a little bit creepy but entertaining to say the least.
That afternoon I had the opportunity to do something really special.
A local friend invited me to an after-school program that she's involved with in Recife's largest Favela of Brasilia Teimosa.
The group is called Driblando Crack and it uses sports like soccer to help kids in the community avoid drugs and trafficking.
We spent the afternoon hanging out, talking about life in Recife and of course, playing a little futebol.
After an awesome time with the crew, I made my way over to catch a sunset boat tour through downtown Recife.
Our large pontoon boat cruised through the wide canals and rivers as I took in all my surroundings.
And while I wouldn't consider it to be the venice of South America as some have labeled it, it was great to see the city from many different perspectives on day one.
The next morning I was up early to go on a little adventure. I borrowed my friend's car and set out on a day trip to Porto de Galinhas.
The first thing you notice upon arrival in the small beach town, is that the people of Porto do Galinhas or Port of Chickens really love their name.
Besides the tacky bird figures everywhere, the beach itself is long and beautiful, and a natural reef just offshore makes for great snorkeling and scuba diving.
I spent the afternoon just relaxing in the sand before making the hour and a half ride back to the city.
Luckily for me, I made it just in time to meet up with friends for some traditional Brazilian nightlife… Karokee!
