Draga no Rio Madeira - Dredge on the Madeira River
Gold mining dredge.
According to our boatman, Tião, the gold boom on the Rio Madeira began in 1992, when one of these dredges could mine one kg of gold dust per day.
5000 such vessels, of varying sizes could be found between Porto Velho (the capital of Brazilian State of Rondônia) and the Bolivian border - this mining method is also used in Bolivia, though no stats were given for that country.
Today, a dredge tipically mines between 30 and 70 grams of gold per day, consuming 10 lt of diesel oil per hour. Carrying 10k lt and staying on a spot for over a month. The bigger dredges are towed to a spot by a dedicated tow boat, while the smaller ones, I've seen towed by canoes.
The boats constitute small enterprises, owned by the miners and tipically a crew of four or five.

Viagem Porto Velho - Manaus

Brazil - From Manaus to Porto Velho via the Infamous BR 319
Leaving Manaus we cross the Rio Negro and Solimões confluence, a sharp line between a blue and a grey river.
After a ferry crossing in the hardly populated Amazon area we drive the infamous BR-319, hardly passable in the rainy season, but OK when we go.
We also face the vegetation that was left after cutting down vast areas of tropical forest.
We visited Brazil on our overland trip from the Netherlands to South Africa and South America; see our channel for hundreds of clips.

Viagem barco Belem Manaus Rio Amazonas Amazon Star
O Barco faz varias paradas durante a o percurso, Breves, Guarupá, Almerim, Prainha, Monte Alegre, Santarém, Óbidos, Juruti, Parintins, Itacoatiara e Manaus.

Boat trip Belem Manaus Amazon River Amazon Star
I made this trip in September 2015, I left Belem do Para bound for Manaus.
I arrived at the port of Belém 15:00 but the boat left the only 19: 00. The first stop is in the town of Breves, then we passed the Short Straits until we got to the Amazon river.
The boat makes several stops along the route, Brief, Guarupá, Almerim, Prainha, Monte Alegre, Santarém, Óbidos, Juruti, Parintins, Itacoatiara and Manaus. At each stop passengers give and others enter the boat at that time many sellers take the opportunity to sell their products, shrimp, takeaway, cheese and acai. Normally the charts are quick a maximum of twenty minutes. Only the stop in Santarém we can get off the boat and know the city, the boat is in port supplying goods for six hours in the video below can give a ride that made the center of the city of Santarém.
The journey is grueling, six-day trip put the boat provides some comfort as air condiciado, cafeteria, bathrooms are clean and the food is not bad, just repetitive, sleeping on the network is not very comfortable for those who do not this used to, but eventually picks up the way. For those who want to make the trip recommend lead network, a sheet, light clothes because the heat is very strong, some remedies for headache, stomachache, also take some cookies and water. The water in the boat is not very reliable.

Ver-o-peso.
