Bolsa Chica Wetlands in Huntington Beach, California | By Aloha Robert (USA)

Size: 300 acres with 1.5 mile trail
Free admission & parking Hours: 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Restrictions: No dogs, bicycles or horses
If you love nature, critters, and water, then this place has it all. But it's easy to miss the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve if you don't know what you're looking for. Bolsa Chica reserve includes over 1,200 acres of undeveloped wetlands, lowlands, and lower mesa operated by the California Department of Fish and Game, and is hidden along the east side of Pacific Coast Highway in the city of Huntington Beach from Warner Avenue to Seapoint Avenue.
Bolsa Chica is one of the last remaining wetlands in southern California, within the past 100 years the area has been used as a hunting ground, for gun emplacements by the United States military, and as an extensive oil production field. For several thousand years prior to those times, Native Americans inhabited the wetlands and surrounding bluffs.
Although there are still active oil wells on the wetlands today, the area has become the home to a large and diverse collection of flora and fauna, as well as a haven for an abundance of costal wildlife and is open to the public daily from sunrise to sunset. Best of all--it's free.

What Surfing in California is Really Like - Day 1 of 10 - Bolsa Chica State Beach
A realistic guide of what it's really like to be an intermediate surfer and surf in Southern California. It's not all sunshine, palm trees and Baywatch. It's easy to get complacent and make an excuse not to surf when its small and onshore. Instead, I decided to surf 10 days in a row no matter what. Too big, too small, bad winds or perfect waves, I was out there. 10 days to start progressing my surfing again and give you a true overview of the waves in Southern California.
Day one was at Bolsa Chica State Beach in Huntington Beach.
The surf conditions for day one weren't great but I did learn to start saying yes to surf instead of making excuses.
Watch all ten days for a realistic view of what surfing in Southern California is all about.
All our videos our based on the ideas from the book The Average Surfer's Guide to Travel, Waves and Progression. You can grab your copy at or on Amazon.

Bolsa Chica Wetlands - Huntington Beach, CA - 2012
Early pioneers called the coastal region including the Bolsa Chica by the name shell beach, because of the hundreds of thousands of empty shells left along the beaches and bluffs by Native Americans. Life was good along the California shore. The Shoshone, who were the first to walk the Bolsa Chica, enjoyed plentiful supplies of fish and shellfish in the wetlands.
Within the Bolsa Chica wetlands and mesas linger the artifacts and people of early California. The 8,000-year-old human remains of ancient burials silently mark time. The unique artifacts of the ancient coastal Californians - such as cogged stones, charm stones, and arrow points - have been found since the earliest pioneers arrived at the Bolsa Chica. There is no question: the first Californians were the native peoples who inhabited the Bolsa Chica mesas and wetlands. Life was good along the shore for the Shoshone-Gabrielino, Tongva, and Acjachemem, who still consider the area a touchstone of earlier times.
Bodyboarding Bolsa Chica State Beach, Huntington Beach, California on January 7 and 8, 2012
Bodyboarding at Bolsa Chica State Beach during a fading decent sized WNW swell on January 7 and 8, 2012. All clips were shot using a custom mounted GoPro HD camera. The first day, the 7th, it was overcast, super glassy and still decent sized about 8 foot faces. The second day came with clear skies, much smaller swell, gusting offshore winds and a real high tide in the early morning providing some fun waves with shore pound close-outs.
