Lessons from a Bombed Out Church
Nick Castelli, a parishioner at Notre Dame, visited St. Luke's Bombed Out Church in Liverpool, England. Here, he shares his reflection on the visit.
This Church reminds us that in our current times of hardship, both within the Church and in our own personal lives, the faith and cross persevere.
While the tradition of Christ's Church is carried on by humans, it is divine in its nature, and can stand against any crisis.

St Lukes the bombed out church , Liverpool, destroyed in1941
A few shots of St Lukes church, Liverpool. This beautiful church was destroyed in the May Blitz 70 years ago, in 1941. The facade of the church remains in the corner of Leece Street, Berry Street and is used for many different events and exhibitions.
St Luke's Church, Liverpool was designed by John Foster, with work commencing in 1802, and the foundation stone being laid in April 1811. The church was completed by his son John Foster and was consecrated on January 12th 1831.
For just over a century St Luke's was the focus of community life for those who lived and worked in the area. This magnificent example of Gothic architecture stood proudly, looking over the confluence of Bold Street, Berry Street, Renshaw Street and Leece Street. It was known then as The Doctor's Church due to its proximity to Rodney Street, which was (and still his) home to many physicians.
Late in the evening of Monday 5th May 1941 St Luke's was hit by an incendiary bomb dropped by the Luftwaffe during the seven day long Liverpool Blitz. The ensuing fire was described by The Liverpool Echo as magnificent. There was little that anyone could do -- the city was burning as a result of a prolonged attack by enemy forces -- fire fighters and relief workers were already stretched to the limit. In the early hours of Tuesday May 6th local residents who were sheltering in the basements of Roscoe Place (just behind the church) reported hearing the great bell fall from the tower -- the death knell of St Luke's?
Almost seventy years later St Luke's Church stands unchanged, bravely representing a vital chapter in Liverpool's history. The interior of the church still shows fire damaged beams and whilst the majority of the windows were destroyed or later removed, small corner pieces remain, undaunted and undamaged by the attacks of enemy aircraft, torrential rain, vandals or the ravages of age.
St Luke's holds a special place in the hearts of the Liverpool population. k Now known locally as The Bombed Out Church St Luke's was bought from the Church of England by Liverpool City Council in 1968 and stands today as a garden of peace and tranquillity for the people of Liverpool. It houses tributes to the victims of the Irish Famine and the XXX maltaXXX but the building itself is now an un-official War Memorial, one of Liverpool's most loved landmarks.
St Luke's is a testimony to the bravery, resilience, memories and experiences of the ordinary men, women and children of Liverpool for whom The Second World War was a part of daily life.

Artists in Residence at St. Luke's The Bombed Out Church - Liverpool, UK
While roaming around Liverpool, UK, I discovered St. Luke's church. It was bombed out in 1941 during the May Blitz of Liverpool in World War II.
It was a beautiful little church from the outside. I didn't even realize it was totally hollow and empty until I came around the corner just as these artists were unlocking the door. I asked if I could join them and they let me right in. We go acquainted and they told me about how they have been struggling to save this church for the arts community. I interviewed them. It was so beautiful in there with art hanging everywhere and the sunflower installation by a Jesuit priest from the Philippines.
