DECORATIVE ARTS
Title: DECORATIVE ARTS
Author: J HEINRICH VON HEFNER-ALTENECK
Format: Hardback
Details:
When Kunstwerke und Geräthschaften des Mittelalters und der Renaissance (1852-1863) was published, what purchasers in fact bought was a small printed museum of unusual treasures. With 216 hand-coloured copperplate engravings, the publication gives a comprehensive overview of applied arts in Europe from the 9th to the 16th centuries. The objects presented comprise furniture, metalwork, jewellery, tapestries, and works of bookbinding. Carefully selected masterpieces such as the gilt Corvinus goblet, an enamelled saltcellar and medieval ivory combs are depicted, along with a decorative sword, now lost. The editor Jakob Heinrich von Hefner-Alteneck (1811-1903) was head of the Royal Cabinet of Prints and Drawings in Munich. The signatures on the plates show that most of the illustrations stem from the hand of artist Jakob Heinrich von Hefner-Alteneck and he can therefore be considered as the work's main draughtsman. Considering that Becker died before the completion of the work, the most influential figure behind it was undoubtedly Hefner-Alteneck. By selecting masterpieces from public and private collections, and reproducing them faithfully in pictures, the editors created a document of artistic quality in itself which also provides evidence of works which have since been lost. This new edition gives more than a glimpse of the treasure chambers of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. This complete reprint was created on the basis of an original copy in the Württembergische Landesbibliothek in Stuttgart. 12 x 17, 408 pages. Text in English, French, German.

At 3:15 a.m.Germany leads a
preemptive strike of 3.2 million
troops into Russia across an
1800 mile front.
(Glantz)
Russian soldiers had no choice but to
surrender, Germany advanced quickly
Soviet Russia had been caught unprepared due to the
astounding negligence of the country's dictator, Josef Stalin,
who had stubbornly disregarded a flurry of intelligence
reports warning that a Nazi invasion was imminent.
(historyplace)
By mid-July 1941, all that remained was for the
Russians to give up and accept their fate under
Hitler, but Russia fought back.
The Russians could field 400 divisions when fully
mobilized. This meant there were three million
additional Russians available to fight.”
Russia's frontline in June
1941 consisted of 2,680,000
soldiers. By December 1941, the
numbers reached 5.5 million.
(Glantz)
But Russia was losing
many soldiers.
By late September 1941,
Germans captured the
city of Kiev in Ukraine,
taking 650,000 Russian
prisoners. (Defeat of
Hitler)
When Germans began
to advance towards
Moscow, resistance was
weak. 660,000 prisoners
were taken.
(Defeat of Hitler)
By mid-October, forward
German units had advanced to
within 40 miles of Moscow.
Only 90,000 Russian soldiers
stood between the German
armies and the Soviet capital.
The entire government,
including Stalin himself,
prepared to evacuate.
(Defeat of Hitler)
Although the Eastern Front had
become static by the end of 1941, till then each day saw
thousands more Russians added to the tally of prisoners. On the
long marches to the rear, they were denied all food and water
and were subsequently penned up in giant outdoor stockades,
left to starve or perish from the winter weather. Ultimately, half
of all Russian POWs, some three million men, would die in
German captivity.” (Defeat of Hitler)
Of the 5,500,000 Russian soldiers;
• 566,852 were KIA
• 2,335,482 were MIA
• And 3,355,499 were POW
There were over 4 million casualties, and
Germany only suffered around 800,000
casualties. (Krivosheev)
THERE WAS NO NEED FOR THIS LOSS,
Stalin was refusing to retreat and was
being stubborn, leading to countless
German captures and kills.
(history.co.uk)
Russians were sent to die,
their rights were abused,
they were forced to serve.

- Ukrainian Churches in the countryside, not in towns, cities and villages
- 1:22 Visited 142 Ukrainian Catholic churches and Ukrainian Orthodox Churches, including 4 Ukrainian churches of a different denomination. Pictures include graveyards, monuments, plaques, halls, etc.
- 1:55 A lot of history built by Ukrainian pioneers. Some Ukrainian churches are over 100 years old
- 2:23 First churches were made with logs. One log church built in 1903 is still standing
- 2:56 Producing the book required four years
- 3:50 Dates of when all Ukrainian churches were built, where they are located
- 4:10 Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Holy Ascension Kobzar on land donated by Wasyl Fedchun; Alex Zabinsky, Kuprian Dubenchuk, Joseph Yaremko, John Nystoruk, Andrew Sachatsky, Wasyl Fedchun, Ivan Ewanchuk, Wasyl Nystoruk, Andrew Maksymchuk, George Kosolowsky, John Boyko, Roman Hrycay, Wasyl Sawchuk, Timosh Samchuk, Roger Forget, Kay Forget

- 5:10 Some churches still hold services a few times a year, or once a month, but many do not have electric heat so they are closed during winter
- 5:45 Immaculate condition of the church grounds, well kept
- 6:03 Style of churches, domes
- 6:47 Immigrants missed their home country and tried to copy the style of the churches from Ukraine
- 7:15 Some churches doubled as schools
- 8:50 Many Ukrainian churches were in remote locations and are difficult to find
- 9:25 Many seniors looking after the churches refuse to let the churches fall into neglect. But there will be difficulties in the next 15-20 years. Church leaders are threatening to demolish the churches
- 9:50 About 14 churches have been designated as an historic site, Saskatchewan government program/funding to protect the Ukrainian churches is limited
- 10:40 Would like to document the Ukrainian churches in Alberta and Manitoba but the work is cost prohibitive. Publishing/printing the book, even with a handful of grants, cost $24,000
- 12:20 Priests had some history but not much. Anna Marie Baran wrote a book Ukrainian Catholic Churches in Saskatchewan in 1977

Taj poyikhav korolevych (And went a prince hunting) - Ukrainian folk ballad - NOVA radist
Arguably, this ballad is the oldest in Ukrainian folklore - that prove a melotype of the song (rare for Ukrainian modal melodic and rhythmic structure, typical of Western gothic), text (numerous archaisms, reminiscences of the ancient epics and calendar rites) and typological situation (the greatest variability in the further folklorisations). Some researchers believe that the hero-protagonist of this ballad is Wladyslaw Jagiello, Grand Duke of Lithuania, married to the last of the legendary P'yast dynasty - Queen Jadwiga, who died in a girl aged during childbirth. This is confirmed by the stylistic and intonation proximity to early renaissance polyphony, including those presented in the Krakow's Kras 52. A very characteristic sample is Alleluia of Nicolai de Radom, a contrafacture of the well-conosced chanson of Dufay.
The concert at Book and Print Museum in Kyiv - a program Castle&Cloister dedicated to the Pidhirci castle and to european origins of the ukrainian sacral and folk motives
