Class 158s on the Borders Railway in and around Galashiels
A look at a couple of Class 158s on the Borders Railway engaged in driver manager familiarisation duties on Saturday the 13th June 2015. Plus some scenes at the same locations, Low Buchholmeside, Kilnknowe and Bowshank, shot in 2014. The line opens to passenger on the 6th of September.

This is the first part of a video retracing the old abandoned railway which once served Galashiels to Selkirk closed since the 50s and at its height in 1870s was very popular with over 10 trains per day.
The Scottish Borders lost all of its railway after a political direction towards the more taxable motorcar, nearly everywhere you go in the Scottish Borders you find old abandoned railways lines and you can only imagine how awesome these steam trains galloping through the Scottish Borders countryside must have been!

Galashiels is a Scottish burgh in Selkirkshire on the Gala Water river. The name is often shortened to Gala. Galashiels is a major commercial centre for the Borders region. The town is known for textile making, and is the location of Heriot-Watt University's School of Textiles and Design, Galashiels Academy and one campus of the Borders College, which as of 2009 has moved and now joins with the University.
On a hillside to the north of the town, Buckholm Tower is a prominent structure which dates back to 1582 and replaced another tower built on the same site but destroyed around 1570. In 1599 Galashiels received its burgh Charter, an event celebrated every summer since the 1930s by the Braw Lads Gathering with riders on horseback parading through the town.
In 1969, the historic Waverley Line which connected the Scottish Borders to the national rail network was closed as part of a wider series of cuts to British Railways. The closure led to a campaign for a return of rail to the region that never diminished. Following years of campaigning, in 2006, the Waverley Railway (Scotland) Act was passed by the Scottish Parliament, which authorised a partial restoration of the service. The new Borders Railway, which links Galashiels with Edinburgh, saw four new stations built in Midlothian and three in the Scottish Borders.
In 2015, the Scottish Borders Council officially announced that Galashiels was the capital of the Scottish Borders. Galashiels' population grew fast through the textile trade with several mills. A connection with the town's mill history, the Mill Lade, still links the town from near the site of mills at Wheatlands Road, to Netherdale, via Wilderhaugh, Bank Street, the Fountain and next to the Tesco/retail development Street.

UK: Thousands march for Scottish independence in Galashiels
Around 5,000 of supporters of Scottish independence marched through the streets of Galashiels on Saturday. People held various flags including those of Scotland and Spanish Catalan republic with bagpipers leading the march. I believe we're a strong nation, have everything we need and we have a right to make our own decisions. It's as simple as that really. Nothing complicated about it. And I don't really understand all the objection to it, said Mike, one of the protesters. Pro-union supporters also held a demonstration being separated from the pro-independence march by a fence.

The Waverley Route ran south from Edinburgh. Leaving the East Coast mainline at Portobello Junction it ran through Galashiels, Melrose and Hawick in the Scottish borders to Carlisle.

The final piece of the Borders railway track has been clipped into place.
The line was closed in 1969 and is expected to be carrying rail passengers by the summer.
BBC Scotland's Cameron Buttle was there as the final pieces were added to the track.
