The pier was destroyed in 1992 by Tropical Storm Iniki which developed into a hurricane the next day and hit Kaua'i on September 11, 1992.
Heavy surf and strong winds never made it a good location for a pier as it was intended for steamships when it was built in 1922.
It's a very good snorkeling and diving location, but be aware of strong currents and the occasional sharks, mostly white tipped reef sharks.

I love this beach - Papalaua Beach Park / Thousand Peaks in Maui
This is a beach along the Honoapiilani Highway near Lahaina. It's good for snorkeling and picnicking with the family. It's a somewhat narrow beach, but has a fun shorebreak and a great view of Molokai.

Napili Shores Oceanfront Upper End Unit
Napili Bay is one of Maui's most precious beaches and bays. This half moon bay is terrific for snorkeling, boogie boarding, even surfing. Fish, coral reefs and turtles are found in this intimate bay. At certain times of year, whale watching is essential, educational and inspiring. One can swim with the turtles. They cluster out in front of this unit off the rocks and around the corner at turtle bay. Watch the sunset every night from your lanai while looking across at the light and magic show of Molokai.
This unit is a second floor, end unit with vaulted ceiling. It is the best location in the complex! (that's why I bought it - location, location, location). Unlike ground floor units, this unit is completely private. The view from the lanai looks directly at Molokai. Sunset Mai Tais from the lanai every night is not to be missed! Out the door is the pool, barbeques, and the very famous Gazebo Restaurant - all oceanfront. 6 acres of lush landscaping. Minutes to Kapalua for golf and tennis. 30 seconds to Napili Bay. 7 minutes to Kaanapali and 12-15 minutes to Lahaina.
Maui Beach Guide: Olowalu Beach & Mile Marker 14 - Maui HI
Located on the west side of Maui, this is one of the best places to see a variety of coral and to spot a sea turtle.
Ka'anapali Beach, Maui, Hawaii
Previously named ‘America’s Best Beach’ in 2003, Ka’anapali Beach is one of the most popular, and well-deserved, choices among Maui’s 81 distinct beaches:
Located in west Maui only a short drive from Olowalu, Lahaina Town and Napili, Ka’anapali Beach is one of the best options for those seeking golden-white sand, turquoise waters, sunshine, Hawaiian Sea Turtle sightings, gorgeous sunsets, walking trails, snorkeling, sunbathing, swimming, cliff jumping and even scuba diving. In addition, Ka’anapali Beach is also a convenient beach location near plenty of restaurants, bars, shops, spas, condos and resorts, and has plentiful options for public restrooms.
Stretching along 3 miles of coastline, this often-visited Maui beach - also known as ‘Black Rock’ for its prime cliff jumping spot on the northern end - Ka’anapali Beach is one of the top local spots for beach-going, and features a nightly cliff diving ceremony at sunset that acts as a prime photo opportunity for guests and locals alike.
Bring along your snorkel gear, or rent it from one of the many nearby activity and accommodation providers, and explore Maui’s most unique marine life, from endemic species like the humuhumunukunukuapua’a, the state fish of Hawaii, to other species like octopus, eagle rays, sea stars, sea cucumbers and sea turtles. It’s recommended to arrive early, as parking normally fills up later in the afternoon, and only to go out on days when the water is calm and you have someone to swim with, as dangerous strong currents can pop up from time to time.
Resorts like the Honua Kai, Hyatt Regency, Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa, Ka’anapali Beach Hotel, Aston at the Whaler and Westin Maui Resort & Spa are located just nearby for ultimate convenience to those staying in the area, but we also recommend bringing cash or a card in case you want to have lunch or enjoy a post-swim pau hana cocktail at one of the many nearby bars and restaurants, including popular options like Leilani’s on the Beach, Hula Grill, Tiki Bar & Grill, Duke’s Beach House or Monkeypod Kitchen.
We’ll see you on the beach!

Best Beaches of Maui: Ulua Beach Park in Wailea
This beach is awesome. It's close to the Andaz Maui at Wailea and just beside Mokapu Beach. The water here is really clear. I swam out about 50 feet and watched the sunset. It was a memorable moment after spending the day touring around Maui.
The waves are mellow, and people were just laying out in the sun. A fantastic Hawaiian Beach beside one of Maui's best resorts.

Honolua Bay on a Good Snorkeling Day
Honolua Bay is north of Kapalua, Maui, and is considered to be either a one of the best snorkeling locations on the island, or one of the best surfing locations - depending on the state of the water. When a north or northwest swell is running, the surfing is great but snorkeling is bad. On this day in July, however, the water was calm and all of the snorkeling charters from Lahaina made the trip to Honolua Bay to provide their guests with a fabulous snorkeling experience in calm, warm water with amazing fish and coral formations.
Honolua Bay can also be access by car, although parking is limited and the water entrance is rocky.
Honolua Bay is about 7 miles north of the Kulakane.
