Botanical Garden Tour - Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, Canary Islands
In a recent trip to the sub-tropic island of Tenerife we visited the local Botanical Garden. This is a compilation of that experience (which doesn't quite do the garden justice). Being from mainland Europe, I always find tropical nature a novelty and the biodiversity mind blowing. This is for all nature lovers out there.

The Garden of Acclimatization has its origins in an order of foundation of Aug. 17, 1788, by King enlightened and absolute Carlos III of Spain on 17 August 1788, and also why collectors scientists in the colonies Spanish New World had to gather exotic plants in this garden, and after a period of acclimatization, then move them to their royal gardens of Madrid and Aranjuez.
The Garden of Acclimatization of the Orotava, was therefore after the Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid, which also shortly before was founded by King Carlos III, the second botanical garden in Spain.
The project continued with the search for the most appropriate location where to install the garden, which Alonso de Nava and Grimón, VI took charge. Marquis de Villanueva del Prado (1757-1832). The land was a gift of Don Francisco de Lugo and Bautista Saavedra, Lord of Fuerteventura.
Although King Carlos III of Spain died in 1788, a few months after the decree of the foundation, his successor Carlos IV of Spain was also favorable to the project. So work began in 1790 according to plans by architect Diego Nicholas Eduardo had chosen planting areas of geometric shapes, finished the design work in 1791. And the first 35 seedlings were planted in 1792.
But the attempt to acclimatize during transport to the peninsula did not work, because the climate of the interior of the Iberian Peninsula, is very different from that in Tenerife.

Also referred to as Jardin de Aclimatacion de La Orotava or, simply, El Botanico, the Botanical Garden of Tenerife is actually located in the municipality of Puerto de la Cruz. Besides the inner scientific value of the garden, the venue is also of historic interest.
Thus, its origins go back to the late 18th century when it was founded upon the order of Marquis Alonso de Nava y Grimon, with the supervision of Nicolas Eduardo. In time, the scientific virtues of the garden were repeatedly ascertained as to the diversity of the species sheltered here.
The floral asset of the garden is also worthy of appreciation by force of the rarity of certain specimens. The highlights of the garden refer to the wide range of species of palm trees.
Although known officially as Jardín de Aclimatación de la Orotava, or JAO, this installation is actually in Puerto de La Cruz (there is a smaller one actually in La Orotava).
Since its inauguration, all those years ago, it has become one of the most important botanical gardens in the world, rating alongside such others as Kew Gardens in London.
It is a huge place, covering around 20,000 square metres. If that wasn't enough, plans are underway to double its size, with the addition of landscaping and more modern facilities.
( Canary Islands - Spain ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Canary Islands . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Canary Islands - Spain
