The Soul of Batik: Nia Fliam
In the lead up to one of their regular workshops at Threads of Life, Nia discusses the deeper meaning behind batik motifs and creations.
Crossing both visible and invisible boundaries of nationality-ethnic background, the traditional-the contemporary, art-craft, Agus Ismoyo (Indonesian) and Nia Fliam (American) have been working collaboratively to produce contemporary textiles in their fine art batik studio, Brahma Tirta Sari in Yogyakarta, Indonesia since 1985. Ismoyo’s ancestors were batik makers in the court city of Solo in Java. He was trained in industrial management at the Industrial Academy (AKPRIND) in Yogyakarta. Nia originally explored dye resist techniques from Africa and Asia in America. She completed her fine arts degree at Pratt Institute in New York City before coming to Indonesia in 1983 to study traditional batik.

This combined workshop brings you two of Indonesia’s great textile traditions: an immersion into the spirit and practice of batik from Java, and a hands-on experience of the archipelago’s indigenous natural dye traditions. The workshop is suitable for beginners, intermediate and advanced practitioners alike.
This week-long workshop explores both the process of batik and an understanding of intangible culture that is at the heart of batik. Agus and Nia will pass on the technical knowledge they have gained through their 30-year creative collaboration by introducing the elements of the batik process: wax (the element of fire), and dye (the elements of water and air). In the introduction to wax, participants will learn the basic techniques of hand-drawn and cap-stamped batik, and participate in the introduction to dyes, specifically, learning about natural dyes. The goals are for the participants to initiate or improve the technical aspects of their batik skills, to enhance their creative process through a personal project, gain insight into Indonesia’s traditional natural dye practices.
Exploring the intangible culture that is expressed through Javanese batik, there will also be sessions to introduce the Tribawana creative process in exercises that emphasize batiking as a process of the whole body. The practice of batik is deeply rooted in the cultural history of Indonesia, with techniques passed on orally through the generations. According to Agus and Nia, part of this oral tradition is Java’s ancient Three Worlds (Tribawana) creative process. With the potential to open a path for pure creative energy within each person, this three-fold process teaches participants to look for the source of creative inspiration within themselves, to develop an intuitive connection with the natural world, and to discover a personal spiritual connection with the creative source.
Alongside the batik, the Threads of Life’s dye team will offer: dyeing and preparing dye with fresh indigo (Indigofera tinctoria, Strobilanthes cusia) from the dye garden; use of sustainably sourced Ceriops tagal dyes that form the basis of the brown in Central Javanese batik;, and use of the Symplocos plant-based alum mordant.
Hosted at the Threads of Life natural dye studio and botanical garden, the workshop’s dye component will be led by staff dyers Komang Sujata, Wayan Sukadana and ethnobotanist Made Maduarta using plants from the studio’s own gardens and Threads of Life’s network of dyers. Komang, Wayan and Made each have 15 years of collaborative field research experience studying, documenting, replicating, and teaching dye recipes learned from indigenous master natural dyers across the archipelago.
INCLUDED FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS: 5 days of workshop program; arrival and departure airport transfers; 5 lunches, 2 dinners; scheduled local transportation.
INCLUDED FOR RESIDENTIAL PARTICIPANTS: 6 nights of twin-share accommodations, breakfasts. (Note: twin share rooms may be made up with a king size bed for couples; single room supplements available on request; shared accommodations for a participant’s partner available on request.)

Campuhan Ridge Walk in Bali
Scenic Mountain Valley Hiking Trail in Ubud
Campuhan Ridge Walk is a free and easy nature trek, popular among repeat visitors to the central highland town of Ubud. The area provides a great retreat from the more hectic southern parts of the island, but this trail presents an even more pristine outback to escape from the contemporary boutique, guesthouse and restaurant-lined Jalan Raya Ubud. While the hike lets you enjoy cool fresh air and probably the most gorgeous hillside vista in the region.
The Campuhan Ridge Walk spans an approximate nine kilometres in total, passing over the lush valley of the Sungai Wos River. On clear mornings or afternoons, you can enjoy a breathtaking backdrop of Mount Agung and outlying small village houses girt by rice fields. Continuing north along the ridge the tall grass transforms into the paddies of the small village of Bangkiang Sidem. Karsa Café of the Bali Rice Terrace Villas resides here, providing a convenient pause for refreshments or a quick bite while admiring the view. Leisure walkers may take the trek back to Ibah, while the more serious and curious trekkers can continue west towards the outskirts of Bangkiang Sidem, down to the Sungai Cerik River then climbing up towards the hills of Payogan in the village of Kedewatan. On your way back, relieve your muscles with a great Balinese massage at your Ubud hotel or at one of the small spas that line the main Ubud road.

Sewu Temple, receiving its name from the Legend of Loro Jonggrang. Yogyakarta 006
Indonesia trip : Sewu Temple, receiving its name from the Legend of Loro Jonggrang. Yogyakarta 006
Sewu is an 8th century Mahayana Buddhist temple located 800 meters north of Prambanan in Central Java. Candi Sewu is actually the second largest Buddhist Temple in Indonesia after Borobudur. Candi Sewu predates nearby Loro Jonggrang temple. Although originally only around 249 temples were present, the name in Javanese translates to 'a thousand temples,' which originated from popular local folklore The Legend of Loro Jonggrang. The original name of this temple compound is probably Manjusrigrha.
History:
According to the Kelurak inscription (dated from 782 CE) and Manjusrigrha inscription (dated from 792 CE), which was found in 1960, the original name of the temple complex was probably Manjusri grha (The House of Manjusri). Manjusri is a Bodhisattva in Mahayana Buddhist teaching symbolizing the Gentle Glory of transcendent wisdom (Sanskrit: prajñā). Sewu Temple was built by the end of 8th century at the end of Rakai Panangkaran's reign and completed during the reign his successor King Indra. Rakai Panangkaran (746—780 CE) was famous as a devoted Mahayana Buddhist King that ruled the Medang Mataram Kingdom.
The Manjusrigrha temple was the largest Buddhist temple built in the Prambanan Plain region. It predates the nearby Prambanan Shivaist temple by over 70 years as well as Borobudur for about 37 years. Located in the heartland of Mataram, the temple was the royal Buddhist temple of the kingdom that regularly held stately religious ceremonies. The Manjusrigrha inscription (792) praised the perfect beauty of the Prasada (tower) of this temple compound. The Bubrah temple located about several hundred meters south and the Gana temple located east from Sewu temple are probably served as guardian temples of Manjusrigrha complex, guarding four cardinal directions of Sewu temple. There are ruins of Lor temple in the north and Kulon temple in the west side of Sewu temple are all in poor condition as the only remainders are a few stones. All these temples are located at almost same distance from the main temple of Sewu. Prior to the construction of Borobudur and Prambanan, this temple probably served as kingdom's main temple. The temples are arranged in the mandala layout, symbolizing universe in Buddhist cosmology.
The temple was probably expanded and completed during Rakai Pikatan's rule, a prince whom married to a Buddhist princess of Sailendra dynasty, Pramodhawardhani. Most of his subjects retained their old religion after the court returned to favor Hinduism. The proximity of the temple to Prambanan Temple, which is a Hindu Temple, suggests that the Hindus and Buddhist lived in harmony in the era that the temples were built. The scale of the temple complex suggests Candi Sewu was a Royal Buddhist Temple and was an important religious site of the past. The temple is located on the Prambanan Plain that is between the southern eastern slopes of Merapi volcano and the Sewu mountain range in the south, near the present border of the Yogyakarta province and Klaten Regency, in Central Java. The plain houses many archaeological sites scattered only a few miles away, suggesting that this area was an important religious, political, and urban center.
