SJ Brett – Your Little England
SJ Brett performing 'Your Little England' at The Rialto Theatre, Brighton.
Stephen Brett was singer in the now defunct Brighton band, The Mojo Fins, and has now been writing and singing songs for over 20 years, having seen him invited to perform on many stages, from winning a slot on the coveted Q Magazine stage at Glastonbury Festival to a slot at Canadian International Music Week. His songs have received wide ranging national airplay and critical acclaim. Stephen is joined in this new live incarnation by Nick Van Vlaenderen on drums and vocals (Rhythm Rifles), Oddur Runarsson on guitar (Lamb) and Paul Pascoe on bass (Beat Hotel/Mudlow).
Your Little England (lyrics)
Little time, time and mind
For the penny to find the slot
Then drop
We could turn this tide
In the long run
I’m guessing that the damage is
Already done
I want to change your mind
So you might still call it home
In the long run
Get them on
The guillotine
Kick and squeal
No pardon or plea
The will of the people
They’ve had a tonne
Rounding on
A second time
With a heart and mind
The same old river of blood
Baptising the deaf and the dumb
Think of the pain of all those in limbo
While you pleasure yourself
Retrieving your little England
Little time, time and mind
For the penny to find the slot
Then drop
You say it’s all a fuss
And that you’ll deliver us
To the promised land
Oh lonely island
So much to answer for
Love and deplore

In 2015 Swing Ninjas released their first album of all-original material called 'Do Ya Hallelujah?'. A mongrel cross between Squirrel Nut Zippers, True Detective, Pokey LaFarge and Graham Green. It's blackly humorous and distinctly wry British gumbo, with songs about life, lust & penitence.
In 2015, Swing Ninjas played stages at WOMAD Festival, Love Supreme Jazz Festival, Norway's Trondheim Lindy Festival, Switzerland's Ewz.stattkino Festival and London's prestigious National Theatre, all whilst holding down a weekly residency at Brighton's Mesmerist.

Brighton is now firmly one of my favourite 'get-away' destinations, with its favourable weather and easy access from London. The Brighton Fringe was all new to me and I think I barely touched the surface of the available performances. It will be good to see how it compares to the Edinburgh Fringe.
Some of the notable performers and street artists included Prof Glyn Edwards - Punch and Judy (0:12), The Cheeky Girls @ Popworld (3:36), Brighton School of Samba (5:54), Hells Angles (The)(0:22), Andy Woon Trio (0:24) and Lynda Murray (7:04) @ The Paris House, Honeyblood @ Resident Music (3:10), Guru Dudu -- Silent Disco (0:42, 3:38, 5:14), Harry's Tricks @ Idle Hands (0:56, 7:28, 8:04), Ana Leon (1:36) and Alison David (3:50) @ The Old Ship Hotel, Fukushima Dolphin (2:18), Jonny Diggens (2:50), Girls in Synthesis @ East Side Tap (4:04), Nadia Moon (4:16) and Bangers and Mash (4:48, 6:56) @ Molly Malones, Ela Southgate / Matt Wall / Roy Gee (4:28), Sarah Harris @ Brighton Music Hall (4:56, 5:48), Little Victor @ The Black Lion (5:24, 6:04), Laura Grumwald (8:32)
I will definitely be going back for more - and exploring more places like the Marina, Restaurants and and some of the other tourist favourites.
Many attractions including Brighton Beach, Brighton Promenade, Brighton Sea, Brighton Palace Pier, Brighton West Pier, Brighton Music Hall, Marlborough Pub and Theatre, Brighton Beachfront, Brighton Beachclub and the Brighton Fringe.
Well travelled shopping and tourist attractions like The Lanes, East Street, North Street, Royal Pavilion, The Regency Restaurant and British Airways i360.
You can find Water Sports including Canoeing, Surfing, Sailing, Lying on Deck Chairs (yes it's a sport).
Some slightly more random/artistic attractions included the Upside Down House, Merry Go Rounds, Glynn & Lani (the horse) @ Heart and Hand, Pelham Puppet Show and lots & lots of Seagulls.
As always - A big thanks to all the performers, venues and members of the public who contributed to this video.

BBC2 | All Change For....Brighton | 1980
17th June 1980 - All Queen Anne front and Mary-Ann back; elegance on one side, vulgarity on the other.
That's how Jack Tinker, theatre critic of the Daily Mail, describes the Regency flavour of Brighton, where he's lived for 20 years.
Since Prinny's day it's been an unlikely confection of theatrical grandeur and what-the-butler-saw. But post-war planning has allowed whole streets of Old Brighton to be torn down and replaced by tower blocks and car parks. Some people have moved away in despair. JACK TINKER is among those who have chosen to stay and fight.

You're invited to the Fenwick estate, Connecticut, where Katharine Hepburn is serving up reminiscences, fiery wit and patrician verve.
Tea at Five is the story of the rise and fall of the four-time Academy Award-winning Hollywood star, told by the tart-tongued, tomboyish Bryn Mawr legend herself.
A one-woman tour-de-force, Hepburn reflects on her life, taking the audience on an unforgettable trip down Broadway, Hollywood Boulevard and memory lane.
Based on Hepburn's memoirs, Me: Stories of My Life, Tea at Five premiered in the UK, performed by the company at the Stratford-Upon-Avon Fringe 2012
