Workplace Hero: Brighton & Hove Albion F.C - St John Ambulance Everyday Heroes Awards
Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club has an outstanding matchday medical team and 10 defibrillators. The team includes: 34 St John Ambulance volunteers, nine members of the South East Coast Ambulance Service, and three doctors. Since the stadium opened in 2011, they have saved the lives of all five people who have had cardiac arrests. All five football fans have made full recoveries. The odds of surviving a cardiac arrest are just one in 20, the chance of five out of five people surviving is one in 3.2 million. Yet, the fast-acting medical team have managed to defy these odds.

Brighton Pride
PRIDE PARADE
The Pride Community Parade is one of the biggest and brightest events in Brighton & Hove’s diary, with over 300,000 people pouring out into the city’s streets to participate in and watch on as an all-singing, all-dancing carnival of colour wends its way from the seafront to the festival site.
Every year, participants include Brighton & Hove Pride’s partners and sponsors, local community groups, representatives from political parties and faith groups, the NHS, Brighton Housing Trust, Sussex Police, Sussex Fire services, the Girl Guides, Scouts, trade unions, and a number of major brands showing their support for diversity, alongside a selection of performers, musicians and artists.
Flamboyant, vibrant and colourful, the Brighton & Hove Pride Parade is matched in size in the UK as an LGBTQ+ event only by London Pride – and is a show-stopping spectacle not to be missed. With ‘Colour my World’ announced as this year’s theme, the parade promises to take on a uniquely global – and eye-poppingly technicolour – hue, so be sure to find yourself a good spot on the packed pavements from which to watch as the spectacle goes by. On top of all the music, floats, bands, costumes and dancing – the parade also carries the message of love, unity, and support for the worldwide LGBTQ+ community that is at the heart of everything that Brighton & Hove Pride does.
PRIDE FESTIVAL
A dazzling display of inclusivity, and just about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on, the Brighton & Hove Pride Festival in Preston Park is the beating heart of every year’s event.
And with Britney Spears set to take to the stage on Saturday – as well as the addition of a whole day of acts on Sunday for the very first time in Pride’s history, this looks set to be a Pride to go down in history.
Described by The Guardian as “the country’s most popular LGBT+ event,” tens of thousands of partygoers have come out in years gone by to see a host of performances from international superstars Sister Sledge, Carly Rae Jepsen, Pet Shop Boys, Years & Years, Fatboy Slim, Katy B, Ruby Rose, The Human League, Fleur East, Alesha Dixon, Ella Henderson, Boy George, Alison Moyet, Paloma Faith, Blue, Tulisa, Collabro, and Ms Dynamite amongst others.
As revellers flood into Brighton from around the world to party alongside city residents, Preston Park is transformed into a paradisiacal playground of performance and dance tents, a wellbeing field, and a bevy of the finest food and drink options to keep you fuelled throughout the day.
The Brighton & Hove Pride team always put a good time first and foremost in mind for the Pride festival, and we’d like to extend a special thank you to everyone who has bought a ticket. If you see an official Pride representative shaking a bucket throughout the day, please don’t be shy – and feel free to add further to the fundraising efforts that lie at the heart of what Pride is all about.

Brighton Table Tennis Club - a place of opportunity and solidarity
Breaking down barriers and uniting people of all ages, including refugees, people with disabilities and asylum seekers, through a mutual love of table tennis
When Tim Holtam moved to Brighton to go to university, he found there was no youth club for the sport in which he excelled as a junior champion – table tennis.
He met Harry McCarney and Wen Wei Xu and, in 2007, the trio approached Brighton Youth Centre to ask about setting up their own club.
They were given a room upstairs for a year for free and invited children to their first session using two worn-out tables.
More than a decade later, the club is now engaging more than 1,500 people from all backgrounds and ages in 70 weekly sessions.
Their youngest player is just two and the oldest, 98.
Tim said: “It’s a club of sanctuary for everyone, a place to come and hopefully feel more positive.
“You’ve got someone who is in their 80s, someone who is 10, you’ve got the national Down’s syndrome champion, or you’ve got someone from Sudan or Syria. It’s just people playing table tennis. It’s not about their label, we’re constantly trying to drop the label.”
As well as running a dedicated centre in Kemptown, they also run 100 tables across the city in parks, squares, schools, prisons, sheltered housing schemes, a centre for homeless people and a psychiatric hospital.
Rooted in the belief that sport can be used as a powerful tool to engage people from all ages and transform lives if you give them the opportunity, the club promotes an inclusive attitude.
In 2016 it became the UK’s first Club of Sanctuary for its work with refugees and asylum seekers.
The award recognised its work providing table tennis lessons to 80 unaccompanied refugee children from Afghanistan, Eritrea, Iran, Iraq, Kurdistan, Algeria and Vietnam.
Hoang Nguyen, a teenage refugee from Vietnam, is now a qualified table tennis coach and was granted leave to remain in the country for five years. His involvement in the club was cited by the Home Office as evidence of strong connections to his community.
The programme has been so successful that the club received a £280,000 grant from Sport England to expand their work. Comic Relief has also supported their programmes working with looked after children and marginalised women.
They have recently been asked to design training for other grassroots sports clubs to help them reach out to local communities and engage different groups in society.
Former city mayor and club trustee Bill Randall said: “Brighton Table Tennis Club is one of the city’s brightest sporting lights. It brings people from many communities and all ages the health and wellbeing benefits of playing sport and brings them together through friendship.”

I AM WHOLE - PACA DANCE PIECE
Growing up can be a positive time for many. However, there are hundreds of thousands of young people across England and Wales for whom the experience is very different.
Mental health difficulties among children and young people are common, and can be both persistent and damaging. Also damaging is the stigma associated with mental health difficulties that manifests itself in a series of ways and impacts even further on the wellbeing young people in need of support.
The #IAMWHOLE campaign is a partnership between YMCA and NHS, born at YMCA’s Right Here project in Brighton. It is fronted by music star Jordan Stephens (Rizzle Kicks) and aims to tackle the problem of stigma in a series of ways.
PACA’s Dance Academy have prepared a piece dedicated to this campaign. It was performed at Let’s Dance – March 2017 at the Brighton Dome.
