Today we did a Huacachina Sandboarding and Dune Buggy tour in the famous Huacachina Sand dunes!
Neither one of us had ever been on a dune buggy before - let alone sandboarded down a really tall sand dune - but here we were, giving it a try. What a day. Sandboarding in Huacachina, Peru is something you really should do when you're there. And the Huacachina sunset is to die for!
We booked our Huacachina dune buggy and sandboarding adventure on the Peru Hop web site and away we went - careening through the sand dunes at light speed (well, maybe slightly slower). They even let us attach the GoPro to the side of the buggy so we could get better video. Hopefully, it shows!
Dune buggies are a ton of fun. Do a tour if you ever get the chance. Sand boarding is also fun - but a bit more scary Plus, every bump you hit, no matter how small, rattles your brain.
But do it at least once. A bit of brain shake never hurt anyone, right?

Sandboarding in Huacachina and Dune Buggy Ride
Having arrived in Lima on a Monday, our first weekend in Peru was spent escaping the city limits in search of adrenaline inspired adventures in Huacachina in the form of sandboarding and dune buggy riding. Having experienced this desert based activity five years ago I knew exactly what we were getting ourselves into; however, I downplayed the situation slightly to Audrey ;) What exactly is it like to be riding dune buggies in the desert? It's like a rollercoaster in the sand. Even the most seasoned extreme adventure sports lovers scream and nervously laugh like hyenas racing down dunes like it is nobody's business. It's a healthy dose of excitement with more than just a pinch of craziness. Sandboarding, on the other hand, doesn't exactly present an opportunity for your adrenaline levels to calm down.

Equally as stimulating to the nervous system, you race down sand dunes head first experiencing a steep incline. You're racing down the dunes at such high velocity, It's only mere seconds before you go from the top of the dune to the bottom. Although these activities in Huacachina (just outside of Ica) may induce a few grey hairs we wholeheartedly recommend it. After all, if you're not doing something that scares you every once in a while you aren't truly living!
PS. To rent a private dune buggy with a guide and access to three dunes for sand boarding it costs roughly 50 Soles per person based on a three person tour. This is roughly $50 in total.

Welcome to Huacachina. Today we're going to be having some fun in the desert and first up we're riding dune buggies.
Woo!
Woah! Screaming!
Enough of an adrenaline rush so far? Oh my goodness. We've only been doing this for a few minutes and I'm already feeling wobbly and shakey. I've just been screaming the whole time. You know what, I did this five years ago and we haven't even done the scariest stuff yet. So how do you feel about that? Nervous.
Si. Es Pacito.
Screaming. Hahaha.

So this is challenge number two. Sandboarding. Are you up for it? I thought the first dune was pretty scary. This is even steeper.
How was it? Woo!

Hahaha. Laughing and screaming.
I'm going. Oh, my gosh. Oh my gosh. Screaming.
How was it? I broke my shoe in the process.
Hahaha.
We suffered one casualty today. My shoe didn't make the third run.
Well they say, if you don't do something scary every day you're not really living. So, I think this qualifies. It was so much fun but completely terrifying at the same time. I think I screamed the whole way. Just me screaming. That is the soundtrack to this. What was more terrifying - the dune buggy or going down head first on the sandboard. Both. Both are equally terrifying. Like you have no control over either of them. But highly recommended if you come to Peru. Do it.
So for the three of us to do a private tour it was 50 Soles per person which works out to roughly $50 total.
And we've got an awesome driver. If they want to go with you how can they find you? Speaking in Spanish.

Huacachina Desert Oasis in Peru has amazing sand dunes around. When traveling to Peru you should stop there for awesome experience in driving in a buggy car in dunes and sand boarding. This is one of the best things to do on your trip to Peru. Tourism in Peru is well developed with lots of interesting options for fun, amazing nature, excellent Peruvian food and wonderful Peruvian people. We had very diverse group of travelers from many different countries. Our hostel arranged this drive and after that many of us met in the bar to talk about our travel experiences in Peru with a few pisco sours.

Huacachina - Ica, Peru - Sandboarding and Dune Buggy Tour
Huacachina is small natural lagoon in some of the largest dunes we have seen near Ica, Peru. The Hostel we stayed at had a dune buggy and sandboarding tour where we slid down the slopes of the dunes on snowboards and buggied the gigantic dunes. It was an adrenaline rich few hours. We loved it.

We took a bus from Lima to Ica. Spent a couples in Ica then we had a great time in Huacachina doing the dune buggy.

We booked a day tour from Lima of the Nazca lines and Huacachina dune buggy and sandboarding tour.
Actually, most people eventually end up riding the sandboard like a sled on their first attempt, face-down on their stomach – so it’s sand sledding really.
After our flight over the Nazca lines, we were driven to Huacachina, located approximately an hour’s drive to the south.
Called the “Oasis of America,” it is built around a natural lake in the desert. Legend has it that the lagoon was created when a young princess was disturbed during her bath by a hunter. She fled, and the pool of water she had been bathing in became the lagoon, while the folds of her mantle became the surrounding sand dunes.
We went for a dune buggy and sandboarding tour in the evening.
The ride in the dune buggy was hair-raising but fun, with the driver deliberately taking sharp turns that made us hold on to our seats.
