Bukit Lawang Sumatra

Sumatra, an island to discover #sumatra #orangutan #travel #sonya7s
Sumatra is disappearing. This beautiful Indonesian island still remaining wild but we don't know until when.
This is the home of two of three species of orangutan in the World but they home is decreasing so quickly due to sow palm oil
Volcanoes remain active as they tradition does. Weddings, dresses, languages ... If you want to discover all those things before they vanish you must travel to this amazing island.
Far away from Bali resorts and Java Island, Sumatra remain a paradise on Earth. But here, the roads are difficult. Don't be hurry, take your time and enjoy it.
There are some images from Kuala Lumpur also.
This video was filmed in summer 2017 and edited in December 2019. It was shot with my loved sony a7s which I sold to buy the a7iii.
If you want to know anything, just ask me. I'll try to remember.

Foreigner Vs Indonesian Orangutan. ????????
I set off at 7 am for a trek through the Sumatran Jungle from Bukit Lawang. Along with Borneo, Sumatra is one of only two places in the world where you can find orangutans in their natural habitat.
The trek was organised through my hotel (Wisma Leuser Sibayak) at a rate of 45 euros. This included licensed guide, tracker, national park permits and food.
I usually prefer to go trek alone but it was not possible to do this one without a guide. It was also a 3-person minimum group but luckily I was able to join two ladies from the hotel to make 3.
To get into the jungle we had to pass though a rubber plantation which was interesting, to see how the rubber is slowly harvested from the trees. I drove through countless of rubber and palm oil plantations during my Sumatra trip so it was nice to see one up close and even bump into one of the farmers while he was working.
Orangutans can be difficult to find because they change their sleeping location every night, Each day they build a new nest in the trees.
The first group of orangutans we saw stayed high up in the trees, until the papa got annoyed by the large group of people below and came down to chase us.
It seemed when one group would find some orangutans it wouldn't be long until all the other groups found out and joined.
We were lucky to spot 13 orangutans during the trek Average is 6 or 7 and sometimes only 1 or 0 are found.
The trek lasted 6-7 hours and was fairly easy effort wise, even with my ankle injury from Sri Lanka not fully healed.
Back in Bukit Lawang, the fresh river water was the perfect way to relax after the orangutan trek.

Cute Orangutan at Bukit Lawang, North Sumatra
This is a cute orangutan that was kept as a pet in someone's house from a young age. It was rescued and brought to the rehabilitation centre in Bukit Lawang, North Sumatra where it now lives with some freedom, although still entirely reliant on humans for food.
A fantastic animal that loves chasing people and stealing their stuff. I get the impression that many of the locals don't treat it well.
Seen here trying to chase someone.
