The Bund (Wai Tan) in Shanghai, China
The Bund (Wai Tan) in Shanghai, China
The Bund or Waitan is a waterfront area in central Shanghai. The area centers on a section of Zhongshan Road within the former Shanghai International Settlement, which runs along the western bank of the Huangpu River in the eastern part of Huangpu District. The area along the river faces the modern skyscrapers of Lujiazui in the Pudong District. The Bund usually refers to the buildings and wharves on this section of the road, as well as some adjacent areas. It is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Shanghai. Building heights are restricted in the area.
Why is the Bund so famous?
Coming to Shanghai and missing the Bund is like visiting Beijing and bypassing the Forbidden City or the Great Wall. The Bund is the iconic landmark of Shanghai and the area around the Bund is the tourist center of Shanghai and is the city’s most famous mile.
What impress travelers most should be the 52 buildings with various international architectural styles which makes the Bund “An Exhibition of International Buildings”. There is no doubt that the Bund is the fusion of Western and Chinese Culture, an epitome of Shanghai’s history, and a great place to explore Shanghai’s today and see the future of Shanghai.
The word bund means an embankment or an embanked quay. The word comes from the Persian word band, through Hindustani, meaning an embankment, levee or dam.
There are numerous sites in India, China, and Japan that are called bunds (e.g., the Yokohama Bund). However, The Bund, without qualification to location, usually refers to this stretch of embanked riverfront in Shanghai.
The Chinese name for the Bund is unrelated in meaning: it means literally the outer bank, referring to the Huangpu River, because this part of the riverfront was located farther downstream than the inner bank area adjacent to the old walled city of Shanghai.
History of Shanghai Bund
The name “Bund” in Anglo-Indian term means “the embankment of a muddy waterfront”. To know Shanghai, you must come to Shanghai Bund. Before the 1840s, Shanghai was a small seaside town and the Bund was once a muddy towpath for boats along Huangpu River. After First Opium War in 1842, Shanghai began to be an open port and later the Bund was the first settlement of Great Britain. Many foreign powers entered Shanghai and erected their distinct Western-style banks and trading houses from the United Kingdom, France, the United States, Italy, Russia, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands and Belgium, as well as the consulates of Russia and Britain, etc. In the later of 19th Century and 20th Century, Shanghai grew into Asia’s leading city, a cosmopolitan and thriving commercial and financial center. Known as “Oriental Wall Street”, the Bund was a historical miniature of colonial-era Shanghai.
Recommended Visiting Route
Travelers could visit the Bund either from north to south or from south to north. It is recommended to walk along the Bund which takes 1-2 hours.
At the northern end of the Bund, on the north bank of Suzhou Creek, rises the brick pile of Broadway Mansions, Russian Consulates, Astor House Hotel. Head south over Waibaidu Bridge and turn west to walk along Suzhou Creek until you reach the area known as the Back Bund. You won’t miss the Union Church which dates to 1885. Behind the church, you can catch a glimpse of the Former British Consulate and gardens, the first foreign building to go up in Shanghai. Follow to a row of beautiful old buildings, beginning with the Gothamesque China Baptist Publication Building. Turn left on Beijing East Road and head back towards to the Bund waterfront. Then, head down Zhongshan East Road to see Jardine Matheson, Bank of China, and Peace Hotel. Reach Promenade to catch good view of the Pudong skyline. Continue to head down to see North China Daily News, Customs House, Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank, Shanghai Club, etc. Just across the street is the 49 meter tall Meteorogical Signal Tower, originally built in 1908 opposite the French Consulate. Later, you’ll reach Yan’an Road which marks the end of the walk.
Day Views
Exploring the Bund in the daytime is quite different from that in the evening. From very early in the morning, before tourists gather here, local Shanghai people come to the riverbank to enjoy walking, jogging, doing exercises and flying kites.

The historic 1930’s Shanghai Bund features tunable white LED façade lighting on 23 out of over 40 buildings that comprise the project to emphasize the classical color tones of this architectural masterpiece with: Signify’s Interact Landmark system, Color Kinetics ColorReach and eW reach, Philips UniFlood and UniStrip LED luminaires.
The Shanghai Bund is part of Signify’s largest-ever single, connected architectural lighting implementation. With its 50,000 LED light points this lighting project will give a lighting facelift for the Shanghai Municipality, encompassing three bridges and 77 buildings in the financial and tourist districts.
Top Five Facts about Shanghai’s city illumination
1. In total there are more than 50,000 connected light points stretching 1.2km along the waterfront – a length equivalent to over 13 football pitches – as well as on three bridges: the Yangpu, Nanpu and Xupu bridges.
2. In Pudong over 40 buildings are lit, including the Shangri-La Hotel and the Shanghai Jinmao Tower.
3. At 1,380 feet, the Shanghai Jinmao Tower is the third tallest building in the city, featuring dots of light to give a sparkling effect on its red top. The red tops of the skyscrapers in Pudong are lit with over 27,000 Philips LED luminaires.
4. A stunning red waterfall effect along the Huangpu river is created using Color Kinetics LED luminaires which may be controlled individually. The color red used for the waterfall effect is symbolic for China.
5. The Yangpu and Nanpu sister bridges stretch 11 km along the Huangpu River and have been illuminated. A total of 7,800 connected Philips LED luminaires now light up the Yangpu, Nanpu and Xupu bridges using the Interact Landmark system.

Neri&Hu believes strongly in research as a design tool, as each project bears its unique set of contextual issues. Neri&Hu desires to anchor its work on the dynamic interaction of experience, detail, material, form, and light rather than conforming to a formulaic style.

Shanghai DreamCenter
The urban regeneration project Shanghai DreamCenter, is well underway and slated to open by the end of 2018. The 460 000 square metre creative and lifestyle destination will feature performance venues, creative media studios, theatres, cinemas, galleries, retail areas as well as restaurants and bars. One of the most ambitious developments of its kind in China, Shanghai DreamCenter envisions to become the flagship attraction of the West Bund Media Port in the Xuhui district.
The new urban form is an organic continuation of the city fabrics. Walkability is the primary objective: permeability, high quality public realm and pleasurable pedestrian experiences. Civic plazas, urban parks, streets, lanes and alleys are carefully orchestrated to create a rich network of public spaces, with human scale and urban experience at the heart of the design.
The unique waterfront site features five industrial structures which are part of a disused cement factory that dates back more than a century. These robust remnants of the city’s glorious industrial past are conserved and adapted into multi-purpose performance venues providing a total of 8,500 seats, including a 3,000 seat arena housed in an enormous dome where cement was once mixed. SHANGHAI - The Bund & Huangpu River cruise
“Once a year go someplace you’ve never been before.” – Dalai Lama
We had already learned that Shanghai is China’s largest city and has a massive population of 25 million (yes that is equivalent to the entire population of Australia ... incomprehensible), and with so many things to do and see in Shanghai we prepared ourselves for a whirlwind 2 days.
As we travelled over the stately Nanpu Bridge, we silently admired the awesome Huangpu River and surrounding views. We then gracefully looped around the spiralling roadways while our knowledgeable tour guide clarified the differences in architecture on the eastern and western sections of the river. He pinpointed some of the modern mega high-rise buildings on the eastern side aka “New Shanghai” and explained the significance of the historical European buildings on the western side aka “Old Shanghai”.
On our arrival to the Bund we were given some free time to explore this famous waterfront promenade. We were fascinated by the large ships travelling along the river and marvelled at the huge variety of architectural styles on both sides. Of course, the best way to admire Shanghai's classic skyline views is on a river cruise (keep reading to find out about our night river cruise).
Our final day of sightseeing in Shanghai started with an optional maglev train experience. What is Maglev? A floating vehicle for land transportation that is supported by either electromagnetic attraction or repulsion. This is the world's first and only commercialized maglev train line in operation and has a highest speed of 431 km/h, the whole journey (30km) is covered in only 8 minutes. Of course, our tour guide challenged us to photograph the moment the 2 trains passed each other on the tracks. Even with warnings and a countdown it was an impossible feat, the best we could do was to video the iconic moment.
Next, we headed to the Shanghai Museum, a large and renowned museum with over 120,000 precious artistic relics from more than 5,000 years ago. The marvellous galleries displayed precious bronze, ceramics, paintings and calligraphies, as well as valuable jades, coins, Chinese seals, furniture and sculptures. It was an amazing opportunity to understand the profound Chinese history and culture, and escape the heat and humidity (ahhh).
In the afternoon, we enjoyed some free time and had a little nap to recharge our batteries before venturing back to the Huangpu River for our (optional) night river cruise. We had been given a heads-up as to the best vantage spot for getting great photos and videos of the buildings and lights, and it seems that this message had been communicated to every tourist on the vessel. We eventually found a little nook at the rear of the vessel and patiently waited to capture the extraordinary views of the illuminated buildings and boats. The enhanting light display included changing colours and images that were even synchronised to music … ASTOUNDING!
Time to hit the road!
