Riots In Seoul, South Korea, 1988
Thousands of students demanding the arrest of former President Chun Doo Hwan clashed with riot policemen today in one of the worst street protests in recent months.
The police said more than 20,000 students from 80 colleges took part in campus rallies or street protests in Seoul and a dozen provincial cities today, the national students' day. They accused the former President of corruption and human rights violations.
About 50 students were arrested, mostly in Seoul, the police said. They gave no injury figures, but said some students and policemen suffered cuts and burns.

SOUTH KOREA: SEOUL: POLICE STOP WOMAN FROM BURNING EFFIGY
Korean/Nat
Riot police stopped South Korean women from burning an effigy outside the Japanese Embassy in Seoul in protest at the way Japanese soldiers used women as sex slaves during the Second World War.
In April a Japanese court ordered compensation payments to 3 so called comfort women who'd been forced into sex slavery.
But other South Korean women say it's not enough and want their President Kim Dae-jung to raise the issue when he visits Japan next week.
About 50 women supporting the Korean Council for Women Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery by Japan burned an effigy of a Japanese soldier in front of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul on Wednesday.
These protestors are demanding that the Japanese government acknowledge the so called comfort women who were used as sex slaves by Japanese soldiers during the second World War.
Some of the women at this protest say they were former sex slaves.
The riot police were quick to dowse the effigy and then a scuffle broke out between the protestors and police.
A Japanese court has already ordered the Tokyo government to pay 3 South Korean women who were sex slaves compensation when they won their case back in April.
And now an organisation called the Asia Women's Fund is offering the so called comfort women compensation.
So far, only 10 former South Korean sex slaves out of 152 who've been officially recognised have accepted their compensation.
But the Korean Council for Women Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery by Japan does not recognise the Asia Womens Fund saying that it is humanitarian aid.
Instead, they are demanding that the Japanese government make an official apology and provide government level compensation.
The South Korean President Kim Dae-jung will officially visit Japan next week and protestors want him to raise the issue.
SOUNDBITE: (Korean)
When our president visits this time he should make the Japanese Prime Minister get on his knees and apologise and agree to full compensation.
SUPER CAPTION: Lee Yong-su, Former sex slave
The Korean Council for Women Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery by Japan has demanded that the Asia Womens Fund be disbanded.
The protesters are also angry at their own government which they say has done little on their behalf.

We are against this inter-Korea summit because we think this summit is just political manoeuvring for the upcoming presidential election. We want North Korea's denuclearisation and we also strongly demand an end to Kim Jong Il's dictatorship.
9. Pan from police to protester
STORYLINE:
Anti-North Korean protesters held a rally near the presidential palace in Seoul on Thursday to protest against the summit planned for later this month between the leaders of the two Koreas.
The protesters burned flags of the communist country and torched pictures of its leader Kim Jong Il.
South Korea insisted on Thursday that the inter-Korea summit at the end of August would help efforts to rid the communist nation of nuclear weapons.
But protest leader, Park Chang-sung said the summit was just political manoeuvring ahead of the upcoming South Korean presidential elections.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Il is to host South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun on August 28-30 in Pyongyang, the second time leaders of the Koreas will meet since their division after World War II.
The United States has welcomed the summit, but said the six-nation disarmament talks remained the main focus for the international community as it seeks to stop North Korea from making nuclear bombs.
North Korea switched off its sole operating nuclear reactor in July as part of a February agreement with the five other countries involved in the six-party talks - the US, Japan, China, Russia and South Korea.
The move was its first step to scale back its nuclear weapons development since the current standoff began in 2002.
North Korea has received 50-thousand tons of heavy oil from South Korea as a reward for that first step, and the energy-starved country is to eventually receive aid equivalent to 950-thousand tons of oil for declaring all its nuclear programs and disabling its facilities.
