CARACAL Biodiversity Center in Kasane, Botswana
The Caracal Biodiversity Centre is an NGO promoting and developing conservation and research programs. Their Environmental Education Centre allows tourists and community members to get an up close encounter with snakes, other reptiles, birdlife, small mammals and insects.
CARACAL is a field based non-profit, non-governmental organization, which was started in 2001 in recognition of the need to integrate traditional and scientific understanding of natural resources and promote partnership between Government and local communities in natural resource management. Our projects include the development of conservation and research programs which contribute to sustainable wildlife utilization, wildlife conflict resolution, endangered species management, rescue of injured wildlife, ecosystem health, and training of government staff, communities and school children for natural resource management. The new Biodiversity Center in Kasane opened in 2010 and supports rescued wildlife as part of our educational program and is open to the public for visitation Monday-Saturday from 9-5. Come see Botswana’s natural wonders and enjoy our diverse collection of infamous snakes!

Ethel the Aardvark Goes Quantity Surveying
Ethel was attacked by dogs and rescued by members of a nearby community. Since then he has undergone reconstructive surgery to repair a very seriously broken leg. He is healing up well, and has been steadily putting on weight on his specially-devised diet. His front-left leg is still weak, though, and he needs to be carefully supervised on his outdoor excursions to make sure that he doesn't put too much pressure on it or, more importantly, that he doesn't use it to dig. We estimate that he is about three-and-a-half months old, and, at present, he weighs 16kg. As an adult he could weigh anything up to sixty or seventy kilograms. The damage to his leg means that he could never survive in the wild (he would be unable to effectively forage or evade predators) and so he will join the CARACAL team as an ambassador for his species and will participate in our conservation education programs and activities in order to raise awareness and to address some of the widespread and harmful beliefs and folklore which lead to the untimely and unnatural demise of so many of these special creatures. This short film documents the early part of Ethel's recovery, from his first tentative steps outside after his surgery to his first attempts at foraging. You will notice a member of the CARACAL team (in association with Virginia Tech's own Alexander Lab) right by his side at every step making sure to look after that leg of his. In the following weeks, Ethel will be getting his very own custom-built habitat at the CARACAL Biodiversity Center in Kasane (Northern Botswana), and you can be a part of this project. CARACAL has started a crowdrise fundraising page, and all donations will go towards Ethel's new home. Please lend a hand! Every dollar helps.
