BELGIUM: FOOTBALL FIGHTING (2)
Natural Sound
The countdown to Saturday's much-feared clash between England and Germany has started for real.
The first serious riot involving English fans in the capital Brussels resulted in dozens of detentions.
Fights also broke out in Charleroi which will host Saturday's showpiece event.
German fans, so far, have not been involved in any trouble.
The first serious violence of Euro 2000.
The Belgian capital is 50 kilometers (31 miles) north of Charleroi which stages Saturday's showpiece game.
Many English fans are staying there ahead of Saturday's game.
On Friday, English hooligans smashed up two bars in the historic heart of Brussels.
Riot police swiftly moved in.
Vandals then destroyed cars and broke shop windows.
The popular Bourse square and Grand' Place were sealed off by riot police as fighting intensified.
Chairs and tables were sent flying,
English hooligans were chased by security forces and cornered.
Police, using tear gas and clubs, arrested many, throwing them to the ground and handcuffing them.
So far in Belgium 223 people have been detained during Euro 2000.
Ninety-nine have been officially arrested and charged, mainly for drunkenness and violence.
Most German fans were expected to go straight to Charleroi on Saturday.
In Charleroi, 60 kilometres away from the Belgian capital, tension also rose on Friday.
Scattered incidents put police on alert.
The trouble came as French fans watched their team play the Czech Republic on television in bars around Charleroi's main square.
France won the match 2-1.
When French fans emerged in victory from bars and cafes, trouble erupted between them and about 150 England fans outside in the square.
England fans drinking in the square hurled beer glasses, cans and bottles, at passing motorists.
Police kept a low-key presence early on in Charleroi, but their total number will grow to some 3,000 by the time the game starts on Saturday night.
Belgian police are dealing swift justice on the eve of the England-Germany tie.
They promised a zero-tolerance approach - and it seems they're determined to fulfill that promise.

Huge Brawl at The Markt Bruges Belgium
Things turned from bad to worse in seconds, as one sour apple sparks a lynch mob that tries to break down the doors of this bar in Bruges. Some kind Americans actually helped me out that night, so cheers to them!
