Bathgate is a town in West Lothian, Scotland, on the M8 motorway 5 miles west of Livingston. Nearby towns are Armadale, Blackburn, Linlithgow, Livingston, West Calder and Whitburn. Situated 2 miles (3 km) south of the ancient Neolithic burial site at Cairnpapple Hill, Bathgate and the surrounding area show signs of habitation since about 3500 BC.
Bathgate was an industrial town in its time. It played host to the Menzies' Foundry (demolished due to the railway link construction) and British Leyland was sited in Bathgate. It had two train stations, Bathgate North and South. There was a link that ran from the site of the current station, along Menzies Road, at the rear of one side of Mill Road all the way to Easton Road where the station was. This was used for the coal-mining industries and the foundries.
Bathgate has easy access to the M8 Motorway via Junctions 3A and 4, linking the town to Edinburgh, Inverclyde via Glasgow and Towns in between. The A801 links Bathgate to the M9 via Polmont. Bathgate Railway Station is operated by Scotrail and is served by eastbound services to Edinburgh Waverley and westbound services to Helensburgh Central via Glasgow, Milngavie via Glasgow, and Balloch via Glasgow.
Bathgate has a great variety of shops. In the late 19th century the co-operative halls were built and the served the community until closure in the 1980s. It provided a bakery, butchery, funeral parlour, grocery store, clothing, furniture and even a dance hall. Even after the closure the co-operative dance hall was used as the Room At The Top. It caught fire in 1997. Bathgate is also home to a popular nightclub called The Twig, located at the end of Livery Street
Notable Bathgate residents have included Debbie Geddes, Bernard Gallagher, former captain of the Ryder Cup Team, David Tennant (born in Bathgate but raised in Paisley); his father Alexander McDonald, former Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland; Sir James Young Simpson, the discoverer of the anaesthetic properties of chloroform; and John Newland, one of the town's major benefactors. Newland emigrated to the West Indies. There he became a rich planter, using slaves to maintain and harvest his sugar-cane crop. His benefaction allowed the establishment of Bathgate Academy, which was founded in 1833. He is remembered today by an annual pageant (known as the Procession or Newland's day), held on the first Saturday in June.
The local secondary schools are Bathgate Academy and St Kentigern's Academy. The Bathgate primary schools are Balbardie, St Mary's, Boghall, St Columba's, and Windyknowe. A new primary school, Simpson Primary, opened on the site of the British Leyland Factory in August 2007

The neolithic burial ground and ritual site on top of Cairnpalle Hill, Torphichen, Scotland. Nice place to visit, and it looks like a prehistoric UFO - but beware the Silver Man!
The Identified Flying Object in the vid is a plane leaving Edinburgh, but the area is well known for sightings - perhaps not coincidentally, but who knows?
Ancient Burial Site. Cairnpapple & Knock Hill, Bathgate
Cairnpapple Hill is just north of Bathgate, near Edinburgh. At the summit is a complex site which was in use for more than 1000 years from around 2800BC.
In its first use, during the late Neolithic period, an arc of seven holes were dug and cremated human remains placed in most of them. Three sockets--which, it is assumed, were probably for megaliths--lie in the centre of the arc. Fragments of two stone axes from Langdale in the Lake District and from Penmaenmawr Mountain in North Wales (judging by the composition of the stone from which they are made) were found in the early layers of the site, indicating that there was communication and trade between the local community and more distant groups.
At a later period, twenty-four standing stones were arranged in an oval, a ditch was dug outside this oval (with entrances at the north and south), and a bank built up beyond the ditch. The total diameter of this henge was around 200 feet. A very few fragments of beaker pottery and some cremated bone were found from this period.
Within the henge a rectangular grave was cut in which was found fragments of beaker. A second grave was marked with a standing stone and surrounded by an arrangement of smaller stones. No bones were found in either of these graves--any that were there would have been destroyed by the acid soil.

JUST OUTSIDE THE TOWN OF BATHGATE IS GALABRAES STANDING STONE. ON THE ROAD TO CAIRNPAPPLE, THE MEGALITH SITS PROMINENTLY ON THE SUMMIT OF A RIDGE. VAST VIEWS TO THE WEST CAN BE SEEN FROM THE STONE.
AT ROUGHLY 1.6M HIGH, THE STANDING STONE RESEMBLES A FINGER WHICH POINTS DUE NORTH TO THE NEARBY CAIRNPAPPLE. THIS SITE IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PREHISTORIC STRUCTURES ON MAINLAND SCOTLAND.
FROM ANOTHER ANGLE, THE MEGALITH LOOKS LIKE A HOODED FIGURE STANDING AT THE TOP OF THE HILL. LONG BEFORE 1902, HUMAN BONES WERE FOUND BY THE FARMER OF GALA BRAES, AT THE BASE OF THE MEGALITH.
NEARBY TO THE WEST IS THE STUMP OF A POSSIBLE SECOND STANDING STONE. COULD THESE PAIR HAVE BEEN SOME KIND OF PROCESSIONAL ENTRANCE TO CAIRNPAPPLE, OR A MARKER TO SHOW OUR ANCESTORS THE WAY, TO THIS SACRED SITE?

Cairnpapple Henge
Cairnpapple was used from about 3,000 BC to 1400 BC firstly as a ceremonial site then several centuries later as a burial site.
Cairnpapple Hill is one of the most important prehistoric sites on mainland Scotland. At about 310m or just over 1000ft in height, the hill offers one of the best viewpoints in central Scotland. For over 5000 years this has been a special place, and evidence of this has been on view since excavations in 1947 & 1948.
The modern concrete dome was built to help display the Bronze-Age burials, and providing visitors with a good atmosphere in which to contemplate death and burial practice in the Bronze Age.
Cairnpapple Hill and Neolithic Site
Cairnpapple Hill is one of the most important prehistoric sites in mainland Scotland. When Professor Piggott of Edinburgh University excavated there in 1947–8, he discovered the summit of the hill crowned with ceremonial and burial monuments. They had been the focus of communal activity for over 200 generations of local farmers, from the 4th millennium BC through to the Christian era. The site was subsequently taken into State care and laid out for visitors to view this remarkable legacy from our remote past.
