Prek Toal, Largest Waterbird Sanctuary, Birding In Cambodia, Cambodia Bird Guide Association [CBGA]
Cambodia Bird Guide Association-CBGA arranges birding trips to remote sites throughout Cambodia, Prek Toal, one of the significant sites for wildlife (birds) in this country! Contact us at info@birdguideasso.org / birdguideasso.org
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Prek Toal,
The sanctuary harbours seven species of water birds of global significance: Spot billed Pelican, Milky Stork, Painted Stork, Lesser Adjutant, Greater Adjutant, Black headed Ibis, and Oriental Darter. There is a globally significant population of Grey-headed Fish Eagles. Over 150 species have been recorded in the reserve. The Prek Toal area consists of seasonally inundated freshwater swamp forest with a high botanical diversity. Short tree shrub makes up most of the landscape, forming a dense under story with scattered large trees, which form the vital nesting ground for large water birds. Prek Toal is unmatched throughout South East Asia for the number and populations of endangered water birds it supports through the dry season. Large flocks of Cormorants, Storks and Pelicans are almost guaranteed from January to May, along with Herons, Egrets and Terns. Prek Toal can be visited as a day trip from Siem Reap. The village is about an hour boat ride from where visitors embark from Siem Reap. Usually returning to Prek Toal Village for an early lunch in the village. After lunch we organise an optional paddle boat tour of the floating village which if not seen before is a unique experience.
Our expert guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel lobby at 5.30am (packed breakfast provided) and take you to where you will board the boat. The floating village of Prek Toal is about an hour’s ride from there. We usually bird in the morning and return to the floating village to enjoy an early lunch in its excellent restaurant. After lunch we organise an optional river boat trip to see the floating village close up which, if you have not been before, is a unique experience.
The journey back to Siem Reap will begin at 3.30pm, first by boat and then your driver and guide will either take you back to your hotel or to another destination of your choice in the town.

Nests of Asian Golden Weaver found near Siem Reap
Exciting discovery - Nest found belonging to the Asian Golden Weaver found near Siem Reap.
A pair of birds, in breeding plumage, was spotted on May 30th, at Tumnop Chen or Atoa (Udormeanchey), about 150Km from Seim Reap.
However, on June 16th, members of the Cambodia Bird Guide Association found around 50 nest sites, close to Siem Reap. This indicates that the population of this near threatened species are nesting later in the year and in different locations.
Normally nest sites are spotted at Kratie or Pursat, between January and February. This discovery, near Siem Reap, is unusual because it is of evidence of a changing pattern of behaviour and breeding.
We will keep you posted on further developments and new sightings of this rare bird.
