Royal tour: Duke of Cambridge plays fighter ace as Duchess looks on
The Duke of Cambridge jumps into a replica of a British World War One bi-plane as he and the Duchess tour the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre in Blenheim, New Zealand.
The Duke of Cambridge played at being a First World War fighter ace when he got the chance to see some historic aircraft from a bygone era.
Prince William clambered into the cockpit of a replica British bi-plane and looked down Its machine gun sight as the Duchess of Cambridge watched.
The royal couple were visiting the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre in Blenheim, New Zealand, and toured the Knights of The Sky exhibition - Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson's display of First World War aircraft.
Outside the tourist attraction a number of planes were lined up on the grass from the First and Second World Wars and the royal couple were led over to the aircraft.
Prince William, 31, was invited to climb into a German Fokker tri-plane but turned down the chance out of patriotism, saying: I'm not climbing into a German plane but I'll get into that Sopwith.
The royal couple headed to a replica Sopwith Pup, a bi-plane that would have been flown by British pilots during the Great War.
Built in the 1960s it was designed to look like the plane used by New Zealand flying ace Malcolm McGregor, awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and bar and credited with downing 10 enemy aircraft and an observation balloon.
Prince William climbed on to the wing and as he swung a leg over to squeeze himself into the small cockpit, the nearby dignitaries laughed.
Peter Jackson, who had shown the royal couple his collection of planes and memorabilia from wartime pilots filmed everything on his smartphone.

Royal tour: Duke and Duchess visit the Blue Mountains
The spectacular views from one of Australia's most visited beauty spots left the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge declaring they will return some day
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge experienced the full majesty of Australia's Blue Mountains today when they visited a rock formation revered by Aborigines.
The couple were given a guided tour of the Three Sisters rock pillars in Katoomba, so called because native Australian legend says they are three sisters who were turned to stone.
The couple described the landscape as beautiful and said they would like to return one day with Prince George.
Anthea Hammon, joint managing director of Scenic World, which runs the visitor centre at the beauty spot, acted as the Duchess's guide, while the Duke spoke to Randall Walker, chief executive of Blue Mountains Lithgow and Oberon Tourism.
Miss Hammon said: Kate said it was beautiful and it was amazing, she asked how far you can see and I told her about 100 kilometres. She was amazed how far you could see.
She loved it, and it is a pretty stunning day after all, so it's hard not to like.
I was talking to her a little bit about bush walking because she likes walking, and she said she would be keen to come back one day.
It was really nice to share our little piece of the world with the royal couple.
A crowd of around 2,000 had gathered at the Echo Point to greet the royal couple.
Echo Point, around 90 minutes drive from Sydney, gives panoramic views of the Three Sisters and is one of the most visited beauty spots in Australia.
According to Aboriginal legend, three sisters called Meehni, Wimlah and Gunnedoo fell in love with three brothers from a rival tribe. Unable to marry because of tribal law, the brothers decided to go into battle against the sisters' tribe to capture them by force.
A witch doctor is said to have turned the sisters to stone to save them from being harmed in the battle, but he was killed in the fighting and could not reverse the spell.
The Blue Mountains, which start around 30 miles outside Sydney, are so called because of a blue haze that hangs over them, caused by light refracting off eucalyptus oil in the air.
The couple's bodyguards plucked a group of young girls from the crowd to meet the royal visitors.
Among them was Ellie Girdler, five, dressed in a pink party dress.
She said of the Duchess: She had a really lovely voice like she was from another country. She took my honeycomb that I had made for Prince George. She had lovely long hair that was brown and a really pretty dress. It was kind of black and white. I was very excited to meet a real life princess.
Her grandfather Cliff Smith, 67, added: Their bodyguard suddenly came over and lifted up Ellie and said 'do you mind?'.
At first I wondered what he was up to but he explained he wanted Ellie to present her gifts to the Duchess. It was such an honour. We will never forget it.
Ainslie Zakis, 12, was also picked.
She said: She was telling me what she and Prince William were doing next week including going to Taronga Zoo. She told me about George and said he was very cute but very, very loud and that she was scared he might scare the animals there.
The couple posed for pictures at the beauty spot and were introduced to three Aboriginal Elders, representing the Indigenous landowners of Echo Point.
They presented them with a possum cloak, made from seven pelts, for Prince George and a kangaroo skin one for themselves.

Royal tour: Prince William and Kate captivated by police puppies
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were left grinning from ear to ear when they were introduced to the 12-day-old puppies during a rather wet visit to the Royal New Zealand Police College in Porirua, near the capital Wellington
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge spent their final day in New Zealand visiting a police college and walking through Wellington's civic area.
Two police dog puppies had the Duke the Duchess of Cambridge in raptures as their tour of New Zealand drew to a close.
William and Kate were left grinning from ear to ear when they were introduced to the 12-day-old puppies during a visit to the Royal New Zealand Police College in Porirua, near the capital Wellington.
The Duke stroked one puppy as he held it while Kate clutched the other to her chest with both hands.
She seemed especially spellbound and said: It wants to hide under my jacket. I think it can smell George.
Kate asked police commissioner Mike Bush: What do you feed them? and Can they see yet?
The German shepherd puppies were born on April 4 and were the first litter of bitch Gucci, from the Dog Training Centre, and stud Borg, by artificial insemination.
The royal couple did not let the constant rain dampen their visit and they sheltered under umbrellas as they talked to officers, police staff and police dog foster families.
The Duchess was wearing a dark skirt suit by New Zealand designer Rebecca Taylor.
Prince William and his wife Kate viewed police recruits training before laying a wreath at the wall or remembrance in memory of police officers who died in the line of duty.

Hundreds of people lined the streets of the city to get a glimpse of the royal couple as they walked through the civic area and signed the visitors' book.
The couple and their baby son George are due to arrive in Sydney later on Wednesday for the start of their Australia visit.

You may have seen the vlogs from my California trip (though there is still one more to come!) but along the way I also filmed what I was wearing to give you a bit of a travel/sight-seeing lookbook postcard. My outfits are pretty basic, but I'm a simple-dressing kinda gal, and this was what was comfortable :) Hope you like seeing some of the beautiful sights of California (and a less-beautiful Anaheim convention centre interior... but still). Give this video a thumbs up if you enjoyed it!

My videos no longer have pre-roll ads because I think ads are annoying (disclaimer: this video might cos it's how I can pay blink-182 for the use of their song that fit the video perfectly). That means you don't have to sit through ads, and it also means I don't earn anything from the content I put on YouTube (just blink-182 does in this case). Royal visit to Christchurch Civic Offices
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited the Civic Offices this morning - 14 April 2014
Royals experience Uluṟu sunset
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have toured the Red Centre today, enjoying afternoon tea, a walkabout and the sunset over Uluṟu.
Royals experience Uluru sunset
Royal visit: Prince William and Kate witness iconic Uluṟu sunset
Prince William and Kate have taken in an iconic sunset at Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park to end their tour of the Red Centre.
The Royals took part in a guided walk around Uluṟu having been given a welcome to country, including a traditional Indigenous dance performance, at the National Park's cultural centre.
Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales, climbed Uluṟu in 1983 during their tour of Central Australia.
Prince William did not follow in his parents' footsteps, but rather took a guided tour around the rock with the Duchess of Cambridge and two locals.
Traditional land owner Daisy Walkabout, who welcomed William's parents three decades ago, was a part of the welcoming this afternoon.
We're happy to meet them, like we were happy to meet (Charles and Diana) in the past, she said.
They've travelled a lot and now they will come to see this country, and it will be good to know they have seen Uluṟu, which is so hugely significant not just for a small group of people but a whole range of people that are related and connected to this place.
The couple, who took part in today's leg of the Royal visit without Prince George, earlier attended a reception hosted by Northern Territory Chief Minister Adam Giles.
The Royals then presented employment certificates to Aṉangu at the National Indigenous Training Academy.
The couple tonight camp in luxury before departing for Adelaide tomorrow.
Before the tour, Aṉangu man Sammy Wilson - one of the Royals' guides - said he wanted to teach William and Catherine about the importance of the rock to traditional owners.
When you're visiting some sort of place, visit Uluṟu and we can tell the story about Uluṟu, he said.
Interpreter John Sweeney says walking around the rock with a local is the best way for visitors to appreciate the site.
He says the international media will likely miss the real beauty of Uluṟu.
It's not so much that they miss the point, he said. They get the nice images and the shots.
But sometimes to really appreciate Uluṟu and understand it, you need to really put the camera down, forget about looking through the lens and just go for a walk with Aṉangu, and listen and feel, and that way you really do get the best experience.
More than 100 local and international media personnel packed into the national park for the visit.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were also expected to get the rare sight of water cascading off Uluṟu.
Heavy rain in recent weeks has seen waterfalls spring to life on the surface of the rock and huge pools gather at its base, a sight witnessed by only about 1 per cent of visitors.
Royals receive jewellery and dot paintings
Aṉangu leaders welcomed the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge with gifts including a series of dot paintings on paper made of wallaby droppings.
The Duchess was presented with several gifts, including a necklace and earrings made by local artist Joanne Cooley and a more modern piece by Aṉangu artist Kathy Buzzacott.
The Duke was given a handmade, fire-carved wooden shield made by local craftsman Billy Cooley, as well as a spear.
The couple were also presented with gumnut bracelets and a camel-hair beanie for Prince George, as well as a series of dot paintings by Aṉangu woman Barbara Tjikatu and her family.
The paintings tell the story of the local people and the importance of Aṉangu and non-Aṉangu people working together.
The paintings are on paper made of droppings from the Mala, the local protected rufous hare-wallaby.

Duchess of Cambridge plays volleyball: how did she do?
Volleyball coach Richard Stacey-Chapman analyses the Duchess of Cambridge's technique after she joined in a game at the Olympic Park.
The Duchess of Cambridge was praised for her prowess on the volleyball court today as she stepped on court in a pair of towering wedge shoes.
The Duchess ran around in five-inch high heels making passes and hitting balls over the net as she visited the former Olympic Park today to see how Olympians and Paralympians are being helped by one of her charities.
Volleyball coach Richard Stacey-Chapman told The Telegraph that he was very impressed by the Duchess' technique on the court.
She understood where the ball was going, and her reading of the game was generally very good, Mr Stacey-Chapman said.
But he added that to improve her skills, she should first of all play in some trainers and could also use her hands a bit more when volleying because she was mainly using her fingertips.
The Duchess's impromptu workout came as toured the Copper box arena to learn about athlete workshops run by SportsAid.

Royal fever builds as Duke and Duchess of Cambridge fly into New York
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expected to take the US by storm when the arrive in New York today for a three-day trip
New York is gearing up to give the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge a welcome to remember as the royal couple fly in for the start of a 48-hour visit to the Big Apple.
Neither the Duke nor the Duchess has ever visited the city before, and New Yorkers are said to be “hugely excited” about hosting them.
The Duke and Duchess will visit the Empire State Building, the 9/11 Memorial and the Metropolitan Museum of Art during their whistle-stop tour, and the Duke will also fit in a visit to the White House to meet President Barack Obama.
Danny Lopez, the British consul-general to New York, said: “Over the last few weeks it has been incredible to witness the level of excitement from people wanting to be part of this.
“The excitement in New York has been absolutely phenomenal.”
A spokesman for the Duke and Duchess said they were both looking forward to the visit “immensely”.
The spokesman said: “Their Royal Highnesses fondly remember the incredible welcome they received in 2011 when they visited California and which only stoked their enthusiasm to return to the country this time around.”
The royal couple, who are staying at the Carlyle Hotel, once the New York base of president John F Kennedy, will begin their visit by attending a private dinner hosted by long-term supporter Sir Martin Sorrell, the chief executive of the WPP advertising group, and attended by 15 supporters of the Duke and Duchess’s Royal Foundation charity.
Guests will include John Studzinski, chairman of the American Friends of the Royal Foundation, and other wealthy donors and millionaires the Duke and Duchess hope will become generous donors as a result of the dinner.
The Duke and Duchess will have no time for sightseeing or Christmas shopping during their brief stay in New York, as they are catching a scheduled flight back to London on Tuesday night immediately after a gala dinner at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to raise money for the St Andrews University 600th anniversary appeal.
