Calgary - Canada's Sports Hall of Fame
After driving approximately 6,000km's in our Dodge Grand Caravan the GCAT crew was in serious need of some athletic inspiration, and what better a place to find it than Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in Calgary, Alberta.
Located in the Olympic Park which was the site of the 1988 Winter Olympics the building itself is over 40,000 square feet and offers visitors a unique experience. With over 1,000 artifacts, 12 galleries, and more than 50 hands on interactive exhibits there is something for everyone. Visitors can try their hand at shadow boxing, wheelchair sprinting, or even event broadcasting. There are also exhibits where visitors can talk to current and past Olympians.
As soon as you enter the Grand Hall with its impressive high ceiling you are immediately surrounded by huge video screens and you can feel the impact of Canadian Sports Heroes. There are numerous gallery exhibits which focus on a particular discipline such as Hockey, the Olympics, or even media. In the 'splash gallery' it is all about water sports: rowing, swimming, diving, or kayaking. The 'glide gallery' is another popular exhibit featuring skiing, sliding, and snowboarding. Another unique area is the 'locker room' where visitors are introduced to the latest class of athletes which is continually changing each year.
There is also a commemorative section on Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope. There are numerous artifacts on display and they even have Terry's original shoe that started his campaign in which he dipped in the Atlantic Ocean.
After a bit of fun with the interactive exhibits and some new found inspiration the GCAT team jumped in the van and rolled on for the next adventure.
