Official Opening of Parkway Exhibit at Canada South Science City
A Windsor-Essex Parkway exhibit, created in partnership with students and faculty of St. Clair College, has opened at Canada South Science City in Windsor. Students from the Architecture and Interior Design program created a multi-dimensional, interactive exhibit where families can come and learn more about the Windsor-Essex Parkway that is under construction in their community.
Children can explore a scale model of the completed Windsor-Essex Parkway while driving toy cars on the freeway and through one of the Parkway's tunnels. Along the way, they will learn about active transportation, ecological restoration, sustainability and the latest in construction. Parents will want to bring cameras, as the exhibit has a great photo op for children who want to use their imagination and play dress up.
On hand to officialy open the exhibit were MPP Piruzza, John Fairley, Vice-President College and Community Relations and Bill Baylis, President of the Board

Canada South Science City - Howard Avenue Diversion
The Howard Avenue Diversion located at the east end of the Windsor-Essex Parkway, is one of the first permanent features completed for the Windsor-Essex Parkway.
The Howard Avenue Diversion includes a new permanent two-lane road that connects Highway 3 to Howard Avenue (County Road 9). A modern roundabout incorporated as part of the Howard Avenue Diversion network ensures the smooth movement of traffic in this area. The Howard Avenue Diversion corridor also includes a multi-use trail for pedestrians and cyclists.
Another feature that can be found within the area of the Howard Avenue Diversion is a new carpool lot for commuters. The carpool lot is big enough for approximately 45 parked vehicles. Carpool lots are great. Meeting up with friends or colleagues at a carpool lot and sharing rides means each person spends less money on fuel. It also means there is less wear and tear on personal vehicles and environmental impacts, like pollution, are minimized. Anyone is able to use the carpool lot free of charge.
To build the roundabout, top soil was stripped, engineered clay fill was built up above the sub grade elevation, and then granular fill was placed followed by the road being paved. Construction of the Howard Avenue Diversion took approximately one year with local company Amico Infrastructures leading the work.

Sudbury, Ontario: Driving Around Downtown (August, 2017)
Video of downtown Sudbury, Ontario, Canada taken not long after sunrise on August 16, 2017. Covered is most of the downtown core, along with a drive at the end south on Paris Street to Science North.
Sudbury, Ontario is a city of around 160,000 located 410 kilometres north of Toronto via highway 400/69. By area, this is the largest city in Ontario and the seventh largest in Canada. By population, it is the 24th largest metro area in Canada.
The city was established in the late 1800's with the discovery of nickel ore. Incorporated as a town in 1893, at one point in the 1970's, 25% of the population worked for nickel mining company Inco. Seen in the background at times during the video is the 380 metre tall Inco Superstack, the second tallest structure in Canada after the CN Tower.
Other landmarks that can be seen in the video include the Sudbury Community Arena, home of the OHL's Sudbury Wolves, a venue that opened in 1951 (look for the statue of Stompin' Tom Connors out front). Ramsey Lake is seen near the end. The lake is the largest lake in the world that is located entirely within the boundaries of a single city. Bell Park is also seen, a previous stop on the Amazing Race Canada. Across Ramsey Lake from Bell Park is the campus of Laurentian University.

Science City - Ecopassage (Oakwood Tunnel)
Because the freeway portion of the Windsor-Essex Parkway runs below the existing ground level, a series of short tunnels provide new cross-corridor connections. A major ecopassage or critter crossing was incorporated into the Oakwood Tunnel known as Tunnel-5. This tunnel top re-connects two large Tallgrass Prairie areas that have long been separated.
The Ecopassage will help the Eastern Foxsnake, a rare snake species, move safely from one side of the highway to the other. Because there will be no roadways on the Oakwood Tunnel, the snakes are able to move freely without coming in contact with a car.
The ecopassage will not just help out the Eastern Foxsnake. It will help other animals cross from one side of the Windsor-Essex Parkway and connect to other natural areas
To make sure this tunnel is top safe for snakes, the pathway which crosses the tunnel top has been moved to one side The ecopassage will also include cover objects, such as small piles of brush, which will provide places for the snakes to hide from predators such as raccoons.
The Oakwood Tunnel top is not just a critter friendly place. People will find it a lovely place to visit as well. Like much of the Parkway green space, the Oakwood Tunnel will feature many beautiful wildflowers and shrubs.
There will be interpretative signs that will help you gain an appreciation of the ecopassage and Windsor's very special Tallgrass Prairie ecosystems.

Science City - Active Transportation
If the thought of walking or biking to work, school or a friend's house has ever crossed your mind, the Windsor-Essex Parkway trail network will allow you to safely and easily travel through Windsor, LaSalle and Tecumseh from E.C. Row Expressway to Howard Avenue, never having to cross paths with a vehicle.
The trail network provides choice to you, as a local traveller, to be able to bike or walk rather than drive to your destination. The 20 kilometres of recreation trails integrated in the Windsor-Essex Parkway design provides an incredible opportunity for active transportation.
What is active transportation? Well, the simple definition is active transportation is non-motorized travel. This means that your body does that work that normally a car engine would do to get you from one place to the next.
The use of the Parkway trails offers: a higher quality of life, fewer road accidents, reduced pollution, and the protection and improvement of the environment and surrounding natural resources. Before hopping in your car, ask yourself if you could you walk or use your bike on the Parkway trails instead.
Engaging in safe active transportation allows travellers to reduce commute times and take part in an active healthy lifestyle. When using the Parkway trails please remember and follow all appropriate safety rules so that everyone can enjoy the benefits of active transportation.
