My Life with Old Cars, by Brian McKay, Canberra, Australia
MY LIFE WITH OLD CARS - transcript
Vintage and Historic cars have long interested me, even back when I was a young lad growing up on the Canadian prairies. In those days, my particular attraction was to Model A Fords, largely stimulated by a roadster of that make owned by an older cousin in our community.
But it wasn't until 1949, when I was a university student, that I owned my first vintage car in this case a 1923 Model T Ford. This was a rare, rather strange, centre door model, and very awkward to enter either the front or the back seats. I paid $75 for it, but shortly found that my university funds couldn't really stretch to such an investment, and had to sell it six months later (at a small profit) to a fellow enthusiast.
So the years slipped by, with many cars, both new and older models passing through my hands. However, it wasn't until I moved to Australia in the 1960's that I tracked down something vintage, namely a 1930 Model A roadster similar to the one owned by my cousin all those years ago. However, this was no original beauty, but a basket case requiring a lot of searching for missing parts, and plenty of body panel work (in Australia called panel beating).
During the course of this reconstruction, I ran across and bought a nice 1929 Chevrolet Phaeton, which had been stored away for many years in an old farm garage near where I lived in Canberra. This was an original, one owner vehicle, with only 75,000 miles on the clock. As it was driveable, and in so much better shape than the Model A, I ceased work on the Ford, and conducted a minor refurbishing job on the Chev, which then served me adequately in many subsequent vintage car events.
Nevertheless, I continued to tinker with the Ford, although it still wasn't until 2004 that I finally completed restoration and registered it in our local car club (where it won an award the following year).
Now with two vintage cars, I hankered for something a bit more modern, but retaining the characteristics of the 1940' s. Fortunately, I was lucky enough to find such a vehicle a 1948 Plymouth coupe. This was a. fine original model with low mileage (44,000) and with many of the factory extras of the day. The only drawback was its location 10,000 miles away in the US state of Ohio, which involved considerable expense for inspection and shipping back to Australia.
So that's the story of my stable of older cars. A few of the others I have owned are also included in the photos, the most valuable of which was a rare 1932 Chrysier Imperial. It is now part of the collection of another of our club members, who is slowly restoring it to its past glory.

[4K] Walking in the main street of Coolamon - Australia Tourism
Taking a short walk through the main street of Coolamon.
Coolamon is a town in the Riverina region of south-west New South Wales, Australia. Coolamon is 40 kilometres (25 mi) north-west of Wagga Wagga and 506 kilometres (314 mi) south-west of Sydney via the Hume and Sturt Highways. The town is situated on the railway line between Junee and Narrandera. Coolamon had a population of 2,199 at the 2016 census and is 290 metres (950 ft) above sea level. It is the administrative and service centre for the local government area which bears its name—Coolamon Shire.
The name of Coolamon comes from the Aboriginal word for a basin-shaped wooden dish made and used by Australian Aboriginal people. In the area around the town are thousands of naturally occurring indentations in the ground called Coolamon Holes which fill with water.
Coolamon is in the wheat belt of New South Wales and is a leading state producer of wheat and chaff. Wheat was first grown in the area in the 1850s. In addition, turkeys and wool are produced and the area is noted for the quality and plumpness of its lambs.
The town's broad main street, which has been restored, retains much of its old world charm with its wrought-iron verandahs and awnings. Various bric-a-brac, antique shops, tourist coffee lounge, and a modern bread bakery and cafe invite passing tourists to stop and explore the town. The Up-to-Date store, designed by architect William Monks, has what is probably the only cash ball cash railway still in situ.

Switzerland
Patricia Highsmith, the famous, and eccentric, author of The Talented Mr Ripley, and Carol is living in seclusion in Switzerland with just her books and antique guns for company. When she is visited by an eager and naive editor from her publishing house, who has been tasked with convincing her to write one last Ripley, a thrilling game begins.
But who is the hunter, and who is the prey?
From the company that brought you the critically acclaimed Playhouse Creatures, comes this brilliant production of Joanna Murray-Smith’s taut psychological thriller. Starring Canberra’s own Karen Vickery (Winner Best Actress in a Leading Role in the 2014 Canberra Area Theatre Awards) and Lachlan Ruffy (Channel 9’s Quartermaine) it’s a rollercoaster ride that will take you right to the edge.
