Canterbury, New Hampshire is a beautiful New England village just minutes from the state capital in Concord. First granted charter in 1727, the town is rural and agricultural in nature, attracting artisans and writers because of its peaceful setting near major urban areas. Canterbury Shaker Village, a National Historic Site on 700 acres, is a collection of lovingly restored buildings maintained as a tribute to the original inhabitants, the industrious and inventive Shaker people. The town still boasts a number of working farms and a ride along its winding roads passes stone walls, open fields and scenic hillside vistas.

- We love Canterbury. It has a wonderful atmosphere with friendly neighbors and an ideal location. People work and play together to make Canterbury a great place to live. For example, when the town general store was in danger of closing, residents got together, purchased the property and made sure it continued to operate. The current operators, also town residents, have gone on to improve it and on request will stock products that you need. That was great for us since the store, town center and post office are all an easy walk from the house. The house is easy walking distance to the town library and elementary school
There is always something going on in the town like dancing, quilting, yoga, cross country skiing, holiday programs for kids and adults, the Canterbury Fair or programs at the Shaker Village. The house is right down the street from an apple orchard, there’s a town beach on the Merrimack River, walking, cross country skiing and ski mobile trails abound and the local roads are excellent for biking, running or just walking your dog. There are also several ponds and lakes for fishing and forest preserves for hiking and birding. It’s less than 10 minutes from I-93 and less than an hour from all I-93 ski areas or hiking in the White Mountains or Manadnock region. It’s also less than an hour to the seacoast and 40 minutes to the Manchester Airport and about an hour from Boston.
We chose the site for its natural beauty. We especially love the old growth trees, two ponds, small stream and captivating array of boulders naturally arranged by the last ice age. It feels like a wildness location, which is amazing given its location a mere ½ mile from town center.
The design was a labor of love based on principles from noted architect Christopher Alexander’s Pattern Language. For the interior, we wanted a special design that was comfortable and made an artistic contribution to the space, as well as providing opportunities for the display of art.
For example, we drew from Alexander to create a main entry way that has a transition in light, surface, direction and view, as well as providing a comfortable front porch. Similarly, the downstairs rooms all feature thick walls with generous arches that create comfortable but visually interesting room transitions and ceiling height variety. The wide archways also facilitate an easy passage between rooms that is particularly helpful with entertaining, large dogs or playful children. We once had 60 people in the house and no one was crowded or restricted in their movement from place to place.
We insisted on real plaster for all interior walls and nearly all rooms have thick walls, Zen views and light on 2 or more sides. We chose European proven radiant heated floors to provide even heat and eliminate drafts. The energy efficient windows were all carefully sized and placed to optimize views and take advantage of changes in time and season. It was a treat to wake up each morning and see what new art your house had made with the help of its natural surroundings.
Exterior
The exterior was patterned to interact with the site, not just sit on it. Thus, it incorporates a number of Alexander building principles, like a sheltering roof with generous overhangs that provide protection and pleasantly interact with natural site features. The roof is not just a cap siting on a box.
Living in this house is like wearing your favorite sweatshirt; it is so comfy and cozy. One of my favorite places is the window seat. I can’t tell you how many hours I spent there with a cup of tea, my book or my IPad. It’s private but offers a great view of the outdoors and the birds and resident wildlife, which often come quite close.
I also love the kitchen. I am a cook and the work triangle really works. Everything you need is easily within reach. Other people can get to the refrigerator, sink or dish cabinets without getting in your way, you can talk to your family or guests sitting in the siting area or at the island and you have great views of one of the ponds and the woods.
I love being in the house when it rains. The big overhands put a lot of distance between you and the rain coming off the roof and leave you feeling safe and sheltered. I also love being on the front porch when it rains because the water cascades off the entry shed roof to splash on the rocks below. When it is really raining, the sound and site are both very special.
We are really going to miss being in the house and Canterbury. But nearing retirement with two properties in the same state didn’t make sense. While this home will always be special, we chose to move to our farm to be near our horses.

NH Rebellion Sings We Walk at Shaker Village NH, January 19th 2015
After our 10+ mile walk for the day, the NH Rebellion, Dixville Notch to Concord Group got together, took a group shot and sang We Walk. Here are the lyrics:
We walk with love for our country,
To honor our grannies and sons,
We walk for an end to corruption,
Til the will of the people be done.
